Top 10 Films of 2024

It's that time of year! You know, that time where I'm three months late with my favorite films of the previous year. The ironic part is the few movies that were stopping me from publishing this list due to their later release dates didn't even make it. Without further ado...

Honorable Mentions
These films held a top 10 spot at some point throughout the year before they were bumped off

A Quiet Place: Day One, Cuckoo, Deadpool vs Wolverine, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Blink Twice, Maxxine, The Outrun, Babes, Nosferatu

Bonus Pick:
This was technically a 2023 release, but it made huge waves in 2024 that I felt it deserved its own place.

Red Rooms
No movie got under my skin the way Red Rooms did. A movie I saw for the first time on an airplane screen. It's disturbing without showing any gore and may make you completely rethink how you consume true crime.

10. Wicked Little Letters
*Saorise Ronan voice* WOMEN! I adore this charming little flick.

9. Kneecap
Again I say, I never expected to love a film about three blocks rapping in Irish, but here I am.

8. Late Night With The Devil
I fully admit I didn't expect this film to remain on my Top 10 as the year went on, but it did. It was just so clever and such a star performance by David Dastmalchian.

7. Anora
My list is full of star making turns apparently. Anora was the weird roadtrip comedy I didn't know I needed.

6. Babygirl
This film was just so unapologetic about female sexuality. I loved it. I loved that it didn't end in the cliched disaster that you think it would. 

5. The Substance
Another film I just haven't stopped thinking about since I've seen it. Stylish, smart, and Demi Moore's best performance ever. 

4. Conclave
After my first viewing of Conclave, I thought for sure this would be winning Best Picture, and it took me right up until the ceremony to accept that it wasn't going to. Still, it's a great and has some surprising representation in it. 

3. Sing Sing
It's criminal that Colman Domingo wasn't the front runner for Best Actor this year. Sing Sing packed SO much heart and I will never forgive A24 for fumbling its release so much.

2. A Real Pain
Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin were so perfect together in this film that you would think they were born to act opposite each other. I hope this isn't the last time we see that. To be honest, this was very close to being my #1. Some days it is. 

1. Dune: Part II
Denis Villeneuve's Dune films are top tier sci fi. My best friend and I joke often about how hard we both go for Dune despite never having read any of the novels and actively disliking all previous Dune on film (including your documentary, Jodorowsky!) I'm sure someone will try to gatekeep me, but I'm fine being a new age Dune fan. I was already there with Star Trek.

    I love Dune and just part the DVD part 1 and hope to see Part 2. Yes, I buy DVD’s! I understand why Kieran won because he played the emotionally disturbed, but engaging man that makes you think but would never want on a trip with you. I wasn’t as enamoured with the film as much as you and, if I saw all the films you saw, it probably wouldn’t be in my top 10. I have to see Anorra but I love Conclave and found it a snub when it was not up for best cinematography. I would have September 5 in my top 10.

    I've only seen 4 out of the 10 films in your top 10 and one honorable mention in Nosferatu. Right now, Anora is my #1 film of 2024.

    As much as I hate to say it, we're going to disagree on Dune Part II. I desperately wanted to like it, but it deviates so much from the source material in important ways that I just can't forgive it.

    It is widely loved, and I get that. It's a property that I am just too close to in a lot of ways, and so it's also one of the rare properties I can't forgive for going in a different direction. That's entirely my hang-up, though.

      It's a very valid hang up. The fact that I haven't read the books probably contributes a lot to why I like it so much.

Recently, I was talking to someone about who I thought were the best child actors when I was also a child.  Two that really stood out to me were Elijah Wood and Joseph Mazello, and one film those two were in together was called Radio Flyer.  Then I was reminded about the uniqueness of this film. Review: Armand

Official Synopsis : Armand, a 6-year-old boy, is accused of crossing boundaries against his best friend at elementary school. His mother, Elisabeth (Renate Reinsve) is called to his school to discuss an action plan. This is Norway's submission to the 2025 Oscars for Best International Feature and I've been itching to see what else Reinsve can do after her excellent performance in The Worst Person in The World . Turns out, she can do anything. I think she's even better here.  I have to acknowledge the elephant in the room (in the blog?) This is going to get A LOT of comparisons to Germany's The Teachers' Lounge and while those are not completely unwarranted - this is another film set entirely in a school where a crime may have been committed - Armand takes a very different look at its subjects and how it plays out.  The way this is shot is very captivating. Starting around 2018, I started watching Youtube for more than just movie trailers or music videos whenever a new one dropped. Now I'm in full blown subscription mode and don't bat an eyelash at watching a Youtube video that's over an hour long. I watch Youtube for a few different categories of content, but one of them that I love most is movie/TV essays and commentary, and that's what I'm going to talk about today. Below is a list of my favorite movie related Youtube channels.
