Review: The Fantastic Four: First Steps

Official Synopsis
: Forced to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond, the Fantastic Four (Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn) must defend Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer. (Julia Garner)

My dad's favorite comic book character has been Silver Surfer as long as I can remember, so that was always my primary interest in anything Fantastic Four related. I've always preferred the X-Men or Avengers over "Marvel's First Family" but that doesn't mean I haven't given every FF movie a chance. So how does this stack up to the misfires of the past?

The only thing all three versions of The Fantastic Four have in common is casting Sue Storms that don't pull off blonde. This version, with Wandavison director Matt Shakman's very capable hands gives us a retro 60's vibe with a big focus on family.

This film easily has the best Marvel costumes since Black Panther. I loved the look of this. The four leads had great chemistry together, Galactus wasn't a freaking cloud, and my main attraction, Silver Surfer looked awesome. I liked her side story (and by extension, Johnny's) the most.

The script is a bit light on character development, but for me that was something I didn't mind because I already know who these characters are. They throw a ton of exposition as us early just so they don't have to repeat their origin story a third time, which I appreciated.

I'm still wary about the state of the Avengers moving forward because I'm a jaded Scarlet Witch fan. But this was great follow up to the wonderful Thunderbolts, and it gives me hope.

Grade: B

*side note no one asked for* This poster below is the only good thing to come out of the early 2000's FF movies. My dad STILL has it hung up in his living room after I snagged it from a theater friend.

  1. I'm going to see this film this weekend even though I haven't really caught up with anything from Marvel for quite a while. Cool to know your dad is a fan of the Silver Surfer.

    1. It doesn't connect to the greater MCU at all (yet, obvs) so it's okay that you aren't up to date. I'm not either.
