Review: Zombieland

"Zombieland" is a horror/comedy directed by Ruben Fleischer. It may not be the first to tackle the zombie franchise, but it's one of the best. Perfectly balanced with gore, humor, and surprises. 'Zombieland' is one of the best horror/comedies out there. Great writing, over-the-top zombie killing and witty characters make this little gem shine.

Our story follows Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg: 'Adventureland', 'The Squid and the Whale') He's one of the last few people on earth that hasn't turned into a zombie. He shares with us his "rules" on how to survive Zombieland, and they flash across during every demenstration. He meets Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson: No Country for Old Me) by this point they explain that they use the names of the cities they are from, so that they do not get to close to their newly found travel companions. Tallahassee is very tough and badass, he loves killing zombies and he's been on a serious hunt for a twinkie. (seriously...a TWINKIE) While Columbus is a bit of a whiny nerd compared to Tallahassee, he tags along as they try to find a spot that is un-inhabited by zombies.

Along the way they meet a pair of sisters, Witichta (Emma Stone: Superbad) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin: Little Miss Sunshine) at first the sisters fool them, steal their car and run for it, but they all find themselves together again fighting the zombie apocalypse.

Eisenberg makes for a great lead, he's given strong performances in nearly everything he's been in. We understand and root for his lovable nerd who spent his non-zombie days playing WoW and drinking Code Red. All the characters have great dialogue, and although Witichta and Little Rock are annoying at first, they eventually grow on you. There's also some great cameos in the film, one by Amber Heard (All The Boys Love Mandy Lane) and another one I won't say because it was the best surprise of the movie. So please, don't go looking at the cast sheet for this film, you'll want to be surprised. When they marketed this film they were right to keep other members of the case under wraps. It worked out perfectly. Watch this film, take note of the survival steps (Especially the "double tap") and enjoy. It's great, over the top zombie fun.

Recommended: Yes 4 1/2 our of 5 stars.
