Golden Globe Winners + My Thoughts

The Golden Globes felt pretty long this year. Reading everyone's tweets during the ceremony was actually a bit more interesting than the show itself. There were still a few nice surprises. (Joseph Gordon-Levitt introducing Inception) Here's a list of the winners, my thoughts will be in green.

Best Motion Picture - Drama

Other Nominees:

The King's Speech

The Social Network winning is no surprise. I was hoping for Inception to take the prize. I think some people might get the idea that I didn't like The Social Network and that's why I keep rooting against it. Not true. I loved The Social Network, loved it. I just flat  out liked Inception better for a number of reasons. The dialogue was better in TSN, but Inception was stronger in many other aspects.

Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy

Other Nominees:

The Tourist

If The Kids Are All Right wouldn't have won this I would never have taken the Globes seriously again. Sure I wouldn't call it a comedy per say, but I wouldn't call the rest of the nominees comedies either. TKAAR is definitely the superior film.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama

Other Nominees:

Mark Wahlberg for The Fighter

I still haven't seen The King's Speech, so I can't say much for Firth. A Franco or Gosling win would've been cool. Eisenberg would've been nice too.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama

Other Nominees:

Michelle Williams for Blue Valentine

Good job, Natalie! I wish Portman and Bening could just share the Oscar.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy

Other Nominees:

Kevin Spacey for Casino Jack

When I first tried to guess this category the only person I got right was Jake Gyllenhaal. I've never heard of Barney's Version, but hey Giamatti's speech was fun.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy

Other Nominees:

Emma Stone for Easy A

Bening deserved it. Plus Robert Downey Jr stole the show with the way he introduced the nominees. Only he could make a pass at five women (and one that's half his age) and make it funny, not creepy.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture

Other Nominees:

Jacki Weaver for Animal Kingdom

Leo was phenomenal in The Fighter, and her possibly intoxicated acceptance speech was fun too.

Best Director - Motion Picture

Other Nominees:

David O. Russell for The Fighter

I like Fincher, but would've preferred Nolan.

Best Screenplay - Motion Picture

Other Nominees:

The Kids Are All Right: Stuart Blumberg, Lisa Cholodenko
The King's Speech: David Seidler

I absolutely hate how the Globes bundle adapted and original screenplay together. TSN deserves best adapted screenplay, but Inception deserves best original screenplay.

Best Original Song - Motion Picture

WINNER

Burlesque: Diane Warren("You Haven't Seen The Last of Me")

Other Nominees:

Country Strong: Bob DiPiero, Tom Douglas, Hillary Lindsey, Troy Verges("Coming Home")
Tangled: Alan Menken, Glenn Slater("I See the Light")

Out of all these I've only heard Narnia's song. If I Rise from 127 Hours should've been nominated. That is a nice song.

Best Original Score - Motion Picture

Other Nominees:

The King's Speech: Alexandre Desplat

This is one of my favorite debates this awards season. I think Hans Zimmer's score is better. Why? For a number of reasons. 1) Zimmer scored Inception without seeing the film first, that's pretty damn impressive. 2) Even though Zimmer does a lot of action movies, his scores always feel like they belong to the movie he made them for. They're not interchangeable. Reznor and Ross'ses this awards season. Reznor and Ross's score, while a good one, feels like it could be put on any independent movie. 3) Upon listening to the soundtracks I can picture every part of the movie with the song from Inception. The same can't be said for TSN, only a few songs in it are memorable. The Academy has some really strict rules when it comes to original score, and I'm not sure how Inception or TSN got by them. They both use small bits from previously used material. (Which disqualified Black Swan and True Grit) so if we're going by that logic then 127 Hours should probably win. A.R Rahman is awesome.

Best Animated Film

Other Nominees:

Tangled

How To Train Your Dragon is better.

Best Foreign Language Film

WINNER

Other Nominees:

Biutiful (Mexico/Spain)
The Concert (France)
The Edge (Russia)
I Am Love (Italy)

I thought I Am Love of Biutiful would've taken this. Congrats to Denmark nonetheless.

Best Television Series - Drama

Other Nominees:

"The Walking Dead"

Boardwalk Empire is a good show, I'm glad it's getting some love here. Although Breaking Bad not even being nominated is crap.

Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy

WINNER

Other Nominees:

"30 Rock"

I dare say that all of these shows are better than Glee. Especially BBT and 30 Rock. I really thought Modern Family would win it. I think my main problem with Glee is Lea Michele. Her presence alone makes me not want to watch the show. After seeing interviews and what not with her, she seems so catty and self absorbed. She's got a great voice, but needs a better attitude.

Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

WINNER

Other Nominees:

You Don't Know Jack

The only one of these that I actually watched was The Pacific, and it was pretty boring.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television

Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television

WINNER

Claire Danes for Temple Grandin

Other Nominees:
Jennifer Love Hewitt for The Client List

Just like the Emmys, Danes takes the win. Good for her. Thanks, Golden Globes for reminding me that she previously won for My So Called Life. That was a good show and it was Danes' fault it only lasted one season because she didn't want to return.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy

Other Nominees:

Matthew Morrison for "Glee"

Jim Fucking Parsons! Bazinga

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy

Other Nominees:

Lea Michele for "Glee"

Linney wasn't there to accept her award because her father passed away. Very sad, but congrats. I don't get Showtime so I haven't seen The Big C. But I'll look for it on Netflix.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama

Other Nominees:

Hugh Laurie for "House M.D."

I was rooting for Cranston, but I'm not upset that Buscemi won. He does a great job on the show. As does Michael Pitt.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Drama

Other Nominees:

Kyra Sedgwick for "The Closer"

It's got a rabid fan base, but I think Sons of Anarchy is complete trash. Just my opinion.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

WINNER

Other Nominees:

David Strathairn for Temple Grandin

I thought Eric Stonestreet would win. I think it's a shame Aaron Paul wasn't even nominated for Breaking Bad. Colfer gave a really touching speech and looked genuinely surprised to win. Good for him.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

WINNER

This was predictable, but good for Jane Lynch. She's hilarious.
