DVD Review: Spy

You didn't see that coming?

Susan (Melissa McCarthy) works for the CIA, but she's the one behind the desk. Telling her field agent partner, Bradley (Jude Law) what to do. After something major happens, she finds herself in the field trying to get close to a crime bosses' daughter, Rayna (Rose Byrne) while also dealing with another disgruntled CIA agent, Rick. (Jason Statham)

I'm not a Melissa McCarthy fan. I didn't like Bridesmaids, I think her Oscar nomination is still bullshit, so when I saw previews for this, I had no interest. It was only after the blogging community gave it rave(ish) reviews that I decided to check it out on DVD. I'm glad I did.

This is the least annoying I've ever seen McCarthy. She does have great chemistry with Byrne, and whether she's yelling at her or fighting with some Kardashian wannabe, McCarthy works here. Jason Statham is the star though. Every word that comes out of this guy's mouth is hysterical.

It's very over the top and fun and flows at a very fluid pace. You can tell the cast had a good time with this.

  1. I do like Melissa McCarthy... I had a soft spot for her right from the start because of her work in Gilmore Girls, but I actually enjoy her sense of humour! Anyway, I saw the extended version of Spy last week, it has some nice extra scenes but others they were right to cut. Namely the dick pics, I mean.... there's only so many I can stomach before it stops being funny.

    1. There were more dick pics? Jesus. lol. I never watched the Gilmore Girls, and didn't know until recently that she was in it. That kind of explains how she came with this big fan base. I thought it was all from Bridesmaids.

  2. Byrne and Statham are comedy GOLD here and they steal the movie from McCarthy, who works here (don't get me wrong) but has her moments of...feeling out of her element. Byrne and Statham are ON all of the time. Pitch perfect comedic performances.

  3. I wasn't supposed to see this in the theaters but I ended up doing so in the last-minute and it was the right decision. I had a blast watching this. Especially for Jason Statham who is just fucking hilarious as I just loved everything he and Melissa McCarthy did where the latter became the straight man.

    1. the sweater line I picked for my quote was my absolute favorite. I'm sure it was just a throw away line but I laughed the hardest at the stupidity of it.

  6. I loved Melissa McCarthy like always, but to me..the movie belongs to Byrne. Whenever she appears on screen, Byrne just owns it. Not only did she deserve a Supporting Actress nod at the Oscars, but she eclipsed the entire category imo.

  9. So glad you liked this and are on #TeamStatham as best in show. This is easily McCarthy's best to date, and I've liked most of her other ones (LOVE Bridesmaids and her nomination for it - such a unique character and performance).

    1. I agree about McCarthy, I can't call myself a fan of those. But I had no idea Statham could be funny. He was one I thought was a one trick pony as well.
