2017 Golden Globe Nominations

Who announces on a Monday? This is my sleeping in day, so it was the first time in the seven years of my blog I didn't see the nominations in real time. Here are the nominees with a few thoughts.

Best Motion Picture -- Drama

Hacksaw Ridge
Hell or High Water
Lion
Manchester by the Sea
Moonlight
I actually had to edit my earlier comment because I remembered that Silence should've already screened for the HFPA and it's left out. Wow.

Best Director -- Motion Picture

Damien Chazelle -- La La Land
Tom Ford -- Nocturnal Animals
Mel Gibson -- Hacksaw Ridge
Barry Jenkins -- Moonlight
Kenneth Lonergan -- Manchester by the Sea
I love that Tom Ford got a nomination here. I don't think he'll repeat at the Oscars but it's nice to see. Denis Villenueve not being here for Arrival is the big shocker.

Best Screenplay -- Motion Picture

Damien Chazelle -- La La Land
Tom Ford -- Nocturnal Animals
Barry Jenkins -- Moonlight
Kenneth Lonergan -- Manchester by the Sea
Taylor Sheridan -- Hell or High Water
Happy for Ford again. Sheridan being in for Hell or High Water is surprising. I know he'll be there for the Oscars but with the combined category here I expected him to be edged out.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture -- Drama

Denzel Washington -- Fences
Casey Affleck -- Manchester by the Sea
Joel Edgerton -- Loving
Andrew Garfield -- Hacksaw Ridge
Viggo Mortensen -- Captain Fantastic
Viggo! I saw Captain Fantastic the other day and was saying to myself that they'll probably submit in the comedy category for a better shot at him getting in, so it's nice to see he actually made it for Drama.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture -- Drama

Isabelle Huppert -- Elle
Natalie Portman -- Jackie
Ruth Negga -- Loving
Amy Adams -- Arrival
Jessica Chastain -- Miss Sloane
I have no desire to see Miss Sloane, is that bad? Anyways, I really want someone other than Huppert to win just for something different.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture

Viola Davis -- Fences
Naomie Harris -- Moonlight
Nicole Kidman -- Lion
Octavia Spencer -- Hidden Figures
Michelle Williams -- Manchester by the Sea
This is likely what the Oscars will look like, althought Monoe could go for Hidden Figures instead of Spencer.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture

Mahershala Ali -- Moonlight
Jeff Bridges -- Hell or High Water
Simon Helberg -- Florence Foster Jenkins
Dev Patel -- Lion
Aaron Taylor Johnson -- Nocturnal Animals
First off, Yaasss to Aaron Taylor Johnson! But secondly, wtf is Dev Patel doing in this category? Isn't he the lead in Lion?

Best Motion Picture --Musical or Comedy

20th Century Women
Deadpool
Florence Foster Jenkins
La La Land
Sing Street
I knew when Deadpool one the Critic's Choice last night that we would probably see it here. I liked it, but that over the Nice Guys is ridiculous. I suppose it doesn't matter because La La Land is winning. It's nice to see Sing Street in here at least.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture -- Musical or Comedy

Colin Farrell -- The Lobster
Ryan Gosling -- La La Land
Hugh Grant -- Florence Foster Jenkins
Jonah Hill -- War Dogs
Ryan Reynolds -- Deadpool
Jonah Hill came out of nowhere. Again, Gosling and Crowe were great in The Nice Guys, why not nominate him?

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture -- Musical or Comedy

Annette Bening -- 20th Century Women
Lily Collins -- Rules Don't Apply
Hailee Steinfeld -- The Edge of Seventeen
Emma Stone -- La La Land
Meryl Streep -- Florence Foster Jenkins
Lily Collins is a surprise. Hailee, I predicted. Maybe this will remind her to stick to acting instead of that dreadful pop star thing she's got going on now?

Best Original Score -- Motion Picture

Moonlight (Nicholas Britell)
La La Land (Justin Hurwitz)
Arrival (Johann Johannson)
Lion (Dustin O'Halloran, Hauschka)
Hidden Figures (Hans Zimmer, Pharrell Williams, Benjamin Wallfisch)
No Nocturnal Animals? Wow.

Best Original Song -- Motion Picture

"Can't Stop the Feeling" - Trolls
"City of Stars" - La La Land
"Faith"  -Sing
"Gold" - Gold
"How Far I'll Go" - Moana
The Globes are always so off on this category compared to the Oscars. I think City of Stars and How Far I'll Go will certainly snag nominations, but how did they nominate Sing Street for Best Picture then leave out Drive it Like You Stole It?

Best Animated Motion Picture

Kubo and the Two Strings
My Life as a Zucchini
Moana
Sing
Zootopia
Sing.....SING?!

Best Motion Picture Foreign Language

Divines
Elle
Neruda
The Salesman
Toni Erdmann
I have seen none of these but Toni Erdmann looks so good. Elle, I can't bring myself to see. I considered making an effort based on awards season alone, then I actually read the plot of the movie. Nope, nope nope.

Best Television Series -- Drama

The Crown
Game of Thrones
Stranger Things
This is Us
Westworld
The Globes love their Freshman series and this time Game of Thrones is the only one that isn't new. Happy to see them, Westworld and Stranger Things there, though I think Mr. Robot should've been as well.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series -- Drama
Caitriona Balfe -- Outlander
Claire Foy -- The Crown
Keri Russell -- The Americans
Winona Ryder -- Stranger Things
Evan Rachel Wood -- Westworld
Evan!! Please let her win this.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series -- Drama
Rami Malek -- Mr. Robot
Bob Odenkirk -- Better Call Saul
Matthew Rhys -- The Americans
Liev Schreiber -- Ray Donovan
Billy Bob Thornton -- Goliath
Happy to see Rami and Bob as always.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Support Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

Olivia Colman, The Night Manager
Lena Headey -- Game of Thrones
Chrissy Metz -- This is Us
Mandy Moore -- This is Us
Thandie Newton -- Westworld
I love that Lena and Thandie are in this. If it goes to either of them I'll be happy.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

Sterling K. Brown -- The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story
Hugh Laurie -- The Night Manager
John Lightgow -- The Crown
Christian Slater -- Mr. Robot
John Travolta -- The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story
None of the Westworld actors made it in here, which is a shame. It's Brown's though.

Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

American Crime
The Dresser
The Night Manager
The Night Of
The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story
So happy The Night Of is here. I have such an aversion to Tom Hiddleston now that seeing The Night Manger's name makes me cringe.

Best Television Series -- Musical or Comedy

Atlanta
Black-Ish
Mozart in the Jungle
Transparent
Veep
Yay Veep! It has zero chance of winning here because HFPA will give it to Atlanta per their Freshman series love, but I'm always happy to see it.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

Felicity Huffman -- American Crime
Riley Keough -- The Girlfriend Experience
Sarah Paulson -- The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story
Charlotte Rampling -- London Spy
Kerry Washington -- Confirmation
I forgot Confirmation was eligble this year, I feel like I saw it two years ago. This is Paulson's to take again.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

Riz Ahmed -- The Night Of
Bryan Cranston -- All the Way
John Turturro -- The Night Of
Tom Hiddleston -- Night Manager
Courtney B. Vance -- The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story
I love that Ahmed and Turturro both got nominations. The Night Of was an excellent series.

Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made For Television

American Crime
The Dresser
The Night Manager
The Night Of
The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story
O.J will win big here like they did at the Emmys, I think. I'm glad The Night Of got in. American Crime just pisses me off. Talk about a great show ruined by their stupid finale that wrapped up 0% of the story they were building.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series -- Musical or Comedy

Anthony Anderson -- Black-ish
Gael Garcia Bernal -- Mozart in the Jungle
Donald Glover -- Atlanta
Nick Nolte -- Graves
Jeffrey Tambor -- Transparent
I don't watch any of these shows, but I think Glover will win.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series -- Musical or Comedy

Rachel Bloom -- My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
Julia Louis-Dreyfus -- Veep
Sarah Jessica Parker -- Divorce
Gina Rodriguez -- Jane the Virgin
Tracee Ellis Ross -- Black-ish
Issa Rae -- Insecure
I really need to start Insecure.

  1. We had pretty similar reactions to this. A lot of WTF going on here...

One thing I will say is that Patel is being campaigned supporting because, despite being the lead 'character', he only is in part of the film.

    1. Ahh, I didn't realize he sits out half of it. He also campaigned for Slumdog in Supporting, which I thought was weird at the time too.

Are you proud I didn't bitch about Bridges again? lol

  2. Lol I've found out they announced the nominations only 10 minutes ago. I don't have a lot to comment about since I'm yet to see most of this films. Living in Italy sucks. I'm super excited to see Deadpool in the best comedy group and Colin Farrell in the best actor in a comedy. He was fantastic in The Lobster.

    1. But Italy is gorgeous and seems like it has such delicious food! lol. I like Deadpool, but I'm really shocked The Nice Guys isn't there. Love Farrell's nom though. I wish he'd win.

  3. Great wrap up. I was stunned that Silence was left out. Even more surprised that Finding Dorey didn't get nominated. Zootopia? I know it's loved but I really didn't care for it. Where was Arrival? They pretty much shut the door on it. And Deadpool? Sigh...

    1. Thank you! God..Sing? SING over Finding Dory? The HFPA have a total boner for this movie. They dropped the ball for Arrival in Drama too. Maybe they thought they were getting an actual alien invasion movie?

  4. I'm rooting for Evan all the way. She is part of my Bullet Club bay-bay.

    1. Yes! Evan has been one of my favorite actresses since I saw Thirteen.

  5. STOKED for Tom Ford. Also thrilled about Hell or High Water. Captain Fantastic is decent, but I've seen Viggo deliver far more compelling performances.

    #AnyonebutHuppert

Haven't seen Lion yet, but I TOTALLY side eyed when I saw what they were doing in calling him supporting...the story is ABOUT HIM.

    STOKED for Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

LOL I guess you're not a fan of Sing, huh? Haven't seen it yet myself, but I LOOOOVE seeing Zootopia here.

I'm happy for The Night Of too, but Ahmed is CLEARLY the lead, while Turturro is supporting.

Whaaaat? What didn't you like about the American Crime ending? That's my ISH.

    YOU MUST WATCH INSECURE.

    1. I haven't seen Sing either I'm just pissy because I loved Finding Dory. lol

I didn't like how this last season of American Crime ended because they answered ZERO questions. Did the rape really happen? What happened to the boys? What happened in the trial? You can leave things up to interpretation but not the entire plot.

  6. The ads make it look like Lion is about Dev Patel's character, but he's really only in half the movie - the entire first half is his character as a kid. So it's kind of borderline. I don't have as much of a problem with him being in Supporting as I do with Viola, if the film is anything like the play. That is a leading role, no two ways around it.

The lack of Arrival and the inclusion of Hacksaw Ridge really pisses me off.

    1. I haven't seen Lion yet so I was only going off the trailer, which was why that surprised me. Once I see the film, I'll have to reevaluate. Same with Fences, I never saw/read the play so I don't know what it's about. I'm not sure anything can top Mara and Vikander in Supporting last year lol.

  7. I haven't seen any but am not surprised by Hacksaw Ridge. I am surprised by Viggo being here but glad he is because he always does stellar work. As for tv??? I don't get HBO or Netflix so I am SOL for most of it but I do want to see Westworld

    1. Westworld is an amazing show. HBO has a lot of great programming, you should get it.

  8. The lack of certain TV nominations disgusted me so much :/ But I am happy for Helberg whom i adore in TBBT and Hill who elevated the movie

    1. Helberg is very good on TBBT (when I watched, at least) I have FFJ in my Netflix queue. I should be getting that soonish assuming it gets off very long wait. lol

  9. Tom Ford’s nominations are definitely a highlight for me. I didn’t even think about Gosling and/or Crowe’s snubs for Actor in a Comedy. That’s very strange. And yeah, so bummed that Nocturnal didn’t get a score nom.

    1. I thought Nice Guys was a lock for comedy. I think I even said that back when I reviewed it. Whoops. lol
