Thursday Movie Picks: Girls Trip

This week's theme from Wandering Through The Shelves is Girls Trips! I love when I can make these happen but of course the coronavirus ruined the one I actually had planned for this year. So in honor of all of us rightfully being stuck at home, but still a little bit salty about it, lets go with Girl Trip movies I hated.

1) Bridesmaids

I think this is one of the most overrated comedies of all time. I still can't believe Melissa McCarthy was Oscar nominated for this. For me, absolutely none of the jokes hit.

2) Spring Breakers

I wanted to like this movie so much because everyone else on Twitter did. But I just thought it was ridiculous. I do give them some props for their use of Britney Spears' Everytime. Oh hey speaking of Britney..

3) Crossroads

I think this is one of those so bad it's funnytype movies. I loved it when I was a teenager but when I watched it again when I was older maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan what a mess.

  1. I am someone who loves Bridesmaids and I laugh every time I see it especially the wedding dress scene. Comedy is such a tough genre because you have someone like me where I love most comedies especially the really dumb ass ones( except Pet Detective one of the few films I actually turned off because it is so horrid) but many people will not like one type of comedy yet another type they love. It’s really personal. I haven’t seen the other 2...thankfully:)

    1. You're right, comedy is so subjective and unlike other genres you can outgrow certain types of it. I loved dumb comedies as a kid, now I cringe if I have to sit through one.

  2. I'm one of those people who just don't get all the Bridesmaids hate. McCarthy's nomination was undeserved though.

I hated Spring Breakers lol I didn't even know I was supposed to love it and when I learned about so many people loving it I just couldn't believe it

    1. There's not much Bridesmaids hate, I feel we're a very small group (minus the nomination, I think most people hate that)

That's how I felt about Spring Breakers. I was like "....THIS?!"

  3. Yay! someone else who hates Bridesmaids!!!! I sat in slack-jawed horror as it played out hating every instant of it and wondering how it could be so beloved. It was mean-spirited and vile. I felt so bad that Jill Clayburgh-a big star when I was younger-had this as her final film before her death. I love Melissa McCarthy but I'll never understand her nomination for this.

Crossroads!! Oy! What a dog. Some movies that we remember fondly just should never be revisited.

I've avoided Spring Breakers it always looked stupid to me and from what you say I was right. So I'll keep away.

My first thought was Thelma & Louise which I was sure would be popular today so I avoided it though I think my second two picks were somewhat inspired by it.

Orchestra Wives (1942)-Small town girl Connie Ward (Ann Rutherford) is swept off her feet by Bill Abbott (George Montgomery), a trumpet player in Gene Morrison's swing band (actually Glenn Miller and his entire orchestra). She hits the road with the band but soon finds herself at odds with the cattiness and petty jealousies of the other band members' wives also accompanying their husbands on the cross-country train tour. Add in her jealousy at the harmless flirtation between Bill and Jaynie (Lynn Bari), the band's female vocalist and it’s only a matter of time before things blow between all concerned. A more serious storyline and a lot of glorious Glenn Miller music distinguish this from other 40’s musicals.

Leaving Normal (1992)-Waitress Darly (Christine Lahti) unhappy with her lot decides to drive to Alaska to try and come to terms with her muddled past. In her travels she meets Marianne (Meg Tilly) who is running away from an abusive relationship. As they hit the road north they forge a bond over shared hardships and encounter some eccentric characters along the way.

Bonneville (2006)-Newly widowed Arvilla Holden (Jessica Lange) has a problem. She wants to scatter her late husband Joe’s ashes as he requested but her bitter step-daughter Francine (Christine Baranski) demands they be placed in her family crypt in California. Arvilla, still reluctant decides to take them there herself and hits the road with her two best friends, Margene (Kathy Bates) and Carol (Joan Allen) from her home in Idaho. As they share memories along the way they visit various places Arvilla & Joe spent time during their marriage and begin to scatter some of Joe's ashes as he wanted.

    1. Thelma & Louise was popular today, I still need to see that.

I can't believe McCarthy got nominated for Bridesmaids, there were so many more deserving people but she was a woman being gross so...progress or something.

Spring Breakers was very well loved by a lot of people I enjoy, I just couldn't. The nicest thing I can say about it is that I liked how everything was neon.

I haven't seen any of your picks this week either. I feel like Bonneville should be ringing a bell but it isn't.

  4. We share a pick with Spring Breakers which I do love. Sorry it didn't work for you. I'm kind of with you on Bridesmaids as everyone kept saying it's one of the best comedies ever made but I wasn't in that camp. I like it but I don't think it's that great.

Crossroads... yeah, that was a shitty film. I didn't like it then and I probably still wouldn't like though I've become more appreciative of Britney Spears' music and enjoy the fact that she's still a Southern gal who admits to being an admirable fuck-up with good intentions.

    1. McCarthy's Oscar nom for Bridesmaid infuriated me. That movie was so dumb. I've read some very good reviews/takes from people who liked Spring Breakers and I wanted so badly to relate and I just couldn't.

  5. I haven't seen any of these. Glad to hear Bridesmaids was overrated. I haven't seen it yet but somehow I get a feeling I might not enjoy it.

  8. Hey, we had the exact same idea, that is... creepy. :D Also Crossroads is so bad but like, it's so bad to a point where i find it entertaining. I disliked Bridesmaids too but I that is not rotten on Rotten Tomatoes and that was part of my theme within a theme pick (I had a few this week :D) so I left it out :P
