2020 Emmy Winners

We've made it to the end of Emmy Season! I was curious how tonight's virtual show was going to go, and honestly I think it went very well. I hope the Oscars, SAGs and Globes take note. This is how you do it.Every show that won tonight will donate $100,000 to No Kids Hungry, which was a nice touch. While there was a fet skits, they didn't overload us with them like I expected to and I liked them having actual essential workers presenting every now and then. As for my picks, I came in at 11/21 with the listed categories below. 50% is still passing, right? Below are my thoughts, the winners are highlighted in fuchsia because we're fancy tonight.

Outstanding Drama Series
Better Call Saul
The Crown
Killing Eve
The Mandalorian
The Handmaid’s Tale
Stranger Things
Succession
Ozark
While Succession didn't sweet like Schitt's Creek did, I'm happy to see it nab the top prize. That theme music is a bop and I never want to stop listening to it.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Jennifer Aniston, The Morning Show
Olivia Colman, The Crown
Jodie Comer, Killing Eve
Laura Linney, Ozark
Sandra Oh, Killing Eve
Zendaya, Euphoria
I screamed when Zendaya won. She was such a dark horse nominee and to see her win, and to become the youngest winner ever at age 24 is so exciting. She also urged us to have hope in young people, even though her show often doesn't depict that. I thought that was very sweet.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series
Jason Bateman, Ozark
Sterling K. Brown, This Is Us
Steve Carell, The Morning Show
Brian Cox, Succession
Billy Porter, Pose
Jeremy Strong, Succession
I got this one right! He seemed so genuinely shocked that he won, but I'm glad he did. I thought Cox might out edge him here.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Kieran Culkin, Succession
Giancarlo Esposito, Better Call Saul
Nicholas Braun, Succession
Matthew MacFayden, Succession
Bradley Whitford, The Handmaid’s Tale
Billy Crudup, The Morning Show
Mark Duplass, The Morning Show
Jeffrey Wright, Westworld
I was pulling for Culkin, but I cannot get mad at a Crudup win because he was really fucking good on The Morning Show.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Laura Dern, Big Little Lies
Meryl Streep, Big Little Lies
Fiona Shaw, Killing Eve
Julia Garner, Ozark
Sarah Snook, Succession
Helena Bonham Carter, The Crown
Samira Wiley, The Handmaid’s Tale
Thandie Newton, Westworld
Forgive me, Julia Garner for underestimating you. She's won this award for the second year in a row. Even though I'm not caught up with Ozark, I've always enjoyed her as an actress so I'm happy with this. Sarah Snook winning would've been nice too.

Outstanding Comedy Series
Curb Your Enthusiasm
The Good Place
Dead To Me
Insecure
The Kominsky Method
Schitt’s Creek
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
What We Do In the Shadows
I haven't seen Schitt's Creek and they won EVERYTHING in the comedy categories so I won't have much to say here. Eventually I'll watch it.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series
Christina Applegate, Dead to Me
Rachel Brosnahan, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Linda Cardellini, Dead to Me
Catherine O’Hara, Schitt’s Creek
Issa Rae, Insecure
Tracee Ellis Ross, Black-ish
I really need Issa Rae to win something.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
Anthony Anderson, Black-ish
Don Cheadle, Black Monday
Ted Danson, The Good Place
Michael Douglas, The Kominsky Method
Eugene Levy, Schitt’s Creek
Ramy Youssef, Ramy

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
Andre Braugher, Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Mahershala Ali, Ramy
Dan Levy, Schitt’s Creek
Kenan Thompson, Saturday Night Live
Alan Arkin, The Kominsky Method
Sterling K. Brown, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Tony Shalhoub, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
William Jackson Harper, The Good Place

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
Betty Gilpin, GLOW
Yvonne Orji, Insecure
Kate McKinnon, Saturday Night Live
Cecily Strong, Saturday Night Live
Annie Murphy, Schitt’s Creek
D’Arcy Carden, The Good Place
Alex Borstein, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Marin Hinkle, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Outstanding Limited Series
Little Fires Everywhere
Mrs. America
Unbelievable
Unorthodox
Watchmen
This was such a stacked category and I liked all five shows, but Watchmen was the right winner. I'm happy for them.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie
Jeremy Irons, Watchmen
Hugh Jackman, Bad Education
Paul Mescal, Normal People
Jeremy Pope, Hollywood
Mark Ruffalo, I Know This Much Is True
HA! Statistics were not on my side for Ruffalo, the sole nominee for his series winning but he won anyways. He was so damn good, and I am so damn happy.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie
Cate Blanchett, Mrs. America
Shira Haas, Unorthodox
Regina King, Watchmen
Octavia Spencer, Self Made
Kerry Washington, Little Fires Everywhere
Regina has now won her 4th Emmy and I never tire of seeing her win things. I would've been happy with Shira Haas winning too, but Unorthdox winning directing was a nice surprise for a show I expected to go home empty handed

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series
Holland Taylor, Hollywood
Uzo Aduba, Mrs. America
Margo Martindale, Mrs. America
Tracey Ullman, Mrs. America
Toni Collette, Unbelievable
Jean Smart, Watchmen
I did not see this coming at all, though I should have because this is Uzo's 3rd Emmy.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series
Dylan McDermott, Hollywood
Jim Parsons, Hollywood
Tituss Burgess, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Louis Gossett Jr., Watchmen
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Watchmen
Jovan Adepo, Watchmen
His speech about Dr. Manhattan giving a woman everything she needed in the body of a black man was beautiful. I'm really happy with this win. Two Dr. Manhattan's won tonight.

Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series
Andrew Scott, Black Mirror
James Cromwell, Succession
Giancarlo Esposito, The Mandalorian
Martin Short, The Morning Show
Jason Bateman, The Outsider
Ron Cephas Jones, This is Us

Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series
Cicely Tyson, How to Get Away with Murder
Laverne Cox, Orange is the New Black
Cherry Jones, Succession
Harriet Walter, Succession
Alexis Bledel, The Handmaid’s Tale
Phylicia Rashad, This is Us

Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series
Fred Willard, Modern Family
Dev Patel, Modern Love
Brad Pitt, Saturday Night Live
Adam Driver, Saturday Night Live
Eddie Murphy, Saturday Night Live
Luke Kirby, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
I guessed Brad Pitt so I got this one wrong, but I'm glad Murphy got an Emmy since he was so egregiously snubbed for an Oscar nomination earlier this year.

Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series
Maya Rudolph, The Good Place
Angela Bassett, A Black Lady Sketch Show
Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Saturday Night Live
Maya Rudolph, Saturday Night Live
Wanda Sykes, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Bette Midler, The Politician
I guessed Maya but I thought she'd win for The Good Place instead of SNL...still counting this as me getting it right. I'm petty.

Outstanding TV Movie
American Son
Bad Education
Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings
El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. The Reverend
Bad Education is a great movie so I'm happy it won here. I was rooting for this and El Camino, which would've also been a worthy winner.

Outstanding Variety Talk Series
The Daily Show with Trevor Noah
Full Frontal with Samantha Bee
Jimmy Kimmel Live
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert
John Oliver wins for the 5th year in a row and his reaction to his Emmy exploding out of a box was hilarious. He spoke so highly of his team and how much he misses them, and that was a sweet touch too.

  1. Eddie Murphy, Ron & Jasmine Cepha Jones, Ludwig Gorransson, Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, Regina King, Watchmen, and ZENDAYA!!!! I watched the reaction and... honestly. That's how awards should feel like. A total shock but goddamn it, it makes them so fun to watch. To see the reactions from a few of her co-stars in their own instagram feed made it more special.

10 years ago, she was on Shake It Up and a decade later at the age of 24. Wins an Emmy. I hope more good things are coming because she is awesome. Oh, I remember a reporter on E! said some awful things about her years ago claiming she smelled like weed and such at an awards show for the way she looked. Now that reporter has COVID so it's karma. Fuck E! I hope that channel gets DELETED!!!!

    1. Zendaya's out there winning Emmys and her Shake It Up costar is screwing creators over on OnlyFans. Oh, how different things can turn out for people. I'm so happy for her, She deserves that win.

  2. I was ecstatic that Schitt's Creek won because I am a proud Canadian( and don't care about sports) and this show is hilarious. I love this show but I have to say i have not seen the others. I did try A Good Place but didn't find that one funny at all so I stopped watching very early on. John Oliver's speech was great and I am glad Zendaya won because she seems so sweet. I haven't seen any of the others.

    1. I'm definitely going to pick up Schitt's Creek once I finish watching The Sopranos. The only Canadian show I occasionally watch is Letterkenny. lol

  3. So happy for Schitt's Creek. Everyone else can win next year since they have finished and it was literally their only Emmy year with SIX seasons. I think it was just long overdue. I recommend it. It's very different but it's very.. like I sad... warm like a hug. Without any malice you know. Just very very wonderful.
Succession wins make me happy too, Culkin deserved it too, he is so good but I expect his next season will be even more amazing so maybe then. And well.. not mad at Crudup though, he was brilliant.

I'm a huge Canadian TV show fan! They make such good ones. I should try to recommend them... maybe one day. :D
