Review: Novocaine

Official synopsis: When the girl of his dreams is kidnapped (Amber Midthunder), a man incapable of feeling physical pain (Jack Quaid) turns his rare condition into an unexpected advantage in the fight to rescue her.

I could not find time to go out to the theater this week to see Final Destination: Bloodlines like everyone else, but thankfully for me another cringe injury flick dropped on Paramount Plus this week. 

Look, this movie is VERY formulaic, but I cannot deny just how attached I got to Nate. He's just SO pure and Jack Quaid (who looks so much like his dad when he smiles that it's actually kind of distracting) played him so well. I cannot imagine anyone going into this film and not liking Nate. And I will forever be on the Amber Midthunder train, so I'm happy to see her again as well.

If you're not good with gore, then this film is not going to be for you. Nate takes quite the beating and the camera does not shy away from some of his injuries, even though you wish it would. 

Novocaine isn't a cinematic masterpiece and you will be suspending your disbelief quite a bit, but it's fun! I might have to add this to my Christmas movie rotation (yes, it's a Christmas movie)

    I've heard good things about this. I'll see it when it arrives on a streaming service near me. I just hope Jack isn't like his dad or worse.... his uncle Randy.

    I liked it for what it was. It certainly had its moments. Probably not one I'll revisit very often though.

    I have hopes for this one. It looked like it might be fun, but just as easily could be really, really dumb.

    Of course, those two things aren't mutually exclusive. Sometimes, you just want spectacle.

    Jack Quaid seems to be everywhere these days.The idea seems fun, but way too gory for my liking, even from the trailer.

Recently, I was talking to someone about who I thought were the best child actors when I was also a child.  Two that really stood out to me were Elijah Wood and Joseph Mazello, and one film those two were in together was called Radio Flyer.  Then I was reminded about the uniqueness of this film. Review: Armand

Official Synopsis : Armand, a 6-year-old boy, is accused of crossing boundaries against his best friend at elementary school. His mother, Elisabeth (Renate Reinsve) is called to his school to discuss an action plan. This is Norway's submission to the 2025 Oscars for Best International Feature and I've been itching to see what else Reinsve can do after her excellent performance in The Worst Person in The World . Turns out, she can do anything. I think she's even better here.  I have to acknowledge the elephant in the room (in the blog?) This is going to get A LOT of comparisons to Germany's The Teachers' Lounge and while those are not completely unwarranted - this is another film set entirely in a school where a crime may have been committed - Armand takes a very different look at its subjects and how it plays out.  The way this is shot is very captivating. Starting around 2018, I started watching Youtube for more than just movie trailers or music videos whenever a new one dropped. Now I'm in full blown subscription mode and don't bat an eyelash at watching a Youtube video that's over an hour long. I watch Youtube for a few different categories of content, but one of them that I love most is movie/TV essays and commentary, and that's what I'm going to talk about today.
