2026 Blind Spot Series: The Seven Year Itch
Official Synopsis: When his family goes away for summer vacation, Richard (Tom Ewell) with an overactive imagination is tempted by a sexy new neighbor. (Marilyn Monroe)
What I knew going in: Only Marilyn Monroe's iconic skirt scene.
Movies like this make me question my attraction to men. Every man in this film is a complete dog. I'm used to that with films in the 50's but damn was it dialed up to 11 here.
Objectively there was some decent comedic timing here and there. Ewell and Monroe are both believable in the caricatures they are playing. You can hardly call them anything but that. I'm mostly just a little shocked at how much I disliked this. I wasn't expecting anything groundbreaking but everything about this was just so off putting.
When the nicest thing you can say about a film is "Marilyn Monroe is beautiful" there's a problem.
This one wasn't for me.
Grade: D

I think I actually like this a bit better than you do, but not by much, and it's not a movie I liked or would watch again. I think it's well-cast...and that's about it outside of a few iconic moments. Honestly, I never thought a sex comedy could be this dull.
ReplyDeleteOuch!! I like this film because it parodies men. The jerks who look at women for one thing. I took this film as one for women who should be considered for more than just tiddlywinks. I was never a fan of Tom Ewell. I think he's the problem here because he feels creepy and predatory rather than confused and stupid. Don Knotts would have been better.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Knotts over Ewell. He was a creep in this, and that did not help me lol
DeleteI still want to see this because it's Billy Wilder and it has Marilyn Monroe. Yeah, we know for that skirt scene but we all know she's way better than that.
ReplyDeleteThat was also my thought process but it was not worth it lol
DeleteThis is completely of its time and overall the picture has aged like milk.
ReplyDeleteWhat hasn't aged is Marilyn's power to hold the screen, her comic timing and the absolutely fantastic wardrobe she wears. I know the subway dress is iconic (and she does indeed look marvelous in it) but her orange and black striped evening gown is what I always remember from the one scene that actually made me laugh when Tom Ewell fantasizes about "The Girl" slowly descending the staircase and then sitting at the piano and talking about how the classical music he's playing shakes her and quakes her and makes her "goose pimply" all over. And again it's Marilyn who sells that scene. I did get a little chuckle from the meta scene when Ewell's friend stops by and a panicked Tom mentions "a blonde in the kitchen" when his friend asks what blonde he responds "Oh, wouldn’t you like to know! Maybe it’s Marilyn Monroe!" But we're talking maybe 10 minutes max out of a movie that runs close to two hours!
I will always adore her, but there are far better movies of hers to see. Try Niagara, How to Marry a Millionaire, Don't Bother to Knock or The Misfits next. All are far better than this.
Definitely going to be checking some of those out for her. 100% agree about her power to hold the screen.
