Breaking Emotions Blogathon: Tears and Surprise

Part two of Mettel Ray's blogathon is here! This time she asks us to exam tears (the sad kind) and surprise. It may be obvious, but I should probably point out that surprise is going to have a few massive spoilers, so SPOILER ALERT!

Tears

1) Fantine dreams a dream in Les Miserables.

I'm not even exaggerating when I say that I cried every single time Fantine sang in Les Miserables. All she wanted was a better life for her child, and she didn't get it. Then she died! I was a wreck.

2) Little Daniel in The Impossible

I cried pretty consistently through this movie as well. But finding Daniel is what kicked it off. I have a little boy with beautiful blonde hair like the he had, and I couldn't help but think that if this ever happened to me, I would want someone to help my boy too. It just made me so sad.

3) "Where are his glasses? He can't see without his glasses?" - My Girl

This is one of the first films I ever remember crying in. To this day, I still lose it when Vada attends Thomas Jay's funeral and tries to cope.

Surprise

1) Billy gets shot in the elevator in The Departed.

I did NOT see that coming. At all. Like, what the actual fuck?

2) Jigsaw getting up at the end of Saw.

This scene is what elevates Saw from a "good horror film" to a "great one." None of us were paying close enough attention to realize that the guy lying in the middle of the room was alive the whole time.

3) The Joker makes his pencil disappear in The Dark Knight

"Surprise" is the perfect word to describe this scene. It was Christopher Nolan and Heath Ledger way of expressing that their Joker is not playing around.

  2. OMG, my first thought was 'Les Mis' and then I was like...I used that for awkward so...

    But YES...1000x's YES!!!

And the scene when Daniel reunites with his father made me bawl, bawl, bawl...and then again, I started crying the minute the tsunami hit and I didn't really stop until the next morning. I cry all the time though.

And that Departed mention is PERFECT.

    What.the.actual.fuck!

    Love it.

    1. I hear you with The Impossible. I cried when they found Daniel, I cried when Naomi Watt's was thanking the villagers for helping her. I cried when they lost Daniel, when they found him, when Ewan McGregor made that phone call, when they were all reunited, and when I saw that Watt's had the wrong name on her arm. I'm so glad I watched that movie alone, I was a wreck.

  3. Fuck, I'd probably die out of dehydration if I had a kid myself during watching The Impossible. I was crying so much as it is, but honestly seeing a child in danger in films when you are a mother has got to be insanely emotional.

That Departed moment was gold. My jaw dropped and then I laughed for 5 minutes.

    1. It is! It's weird how much more emotional it is, Motherhood has turned me into a total wuss.

  4. Nice picks! I'm afraid I'd be a basket case watching The Impossible, that'd hit too close to home for me. As for Les Miz, I was bawling even from the trailer, there's something about Anne singing that song that got me!

    1. I was glad when Fantine finally died so I could stop crying. Anne was just slaying that performance.

  5. Great picks! Definitely agree with you about all the tear choices, especially Les Miserables.
I think The Departed was the first moment at a cinema that made me jump! I didn't see Leo's death coming.

  8. Oh the DiCaprio scene...! In fact, everyone's death in the film was so sudden, I think I just started to laugh from shock at that point.

I could have the impossible on my list as well, I forgot that one! It was one of the movies that made me cry the most, it's so emotional.
