2014 BAFTA Nominations + my thoughts

Here's the list of the 2014 BAFTA nominations. I always enjoy them, they tend to nominate people I love that the Academy somehow misses. As always, my thoughts follow in green.

BEST FILM
12 Years A Slave, Anthony Katagas, Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Steve McQueen
American Hustle, Charles Roven, Richard Suckle, Megan Ellison, Jonathan Gordon
Captain Phillips, Scott Rudin, Dana Brunetti, Michael De Luca
Gravity, Alfonso Cuarón, David Heyman
Philomena, Gabrielle Tana, Steve Coogan, Tracey Seaward
I would've swapped Captain Phillips with The Wolf of Wall Street. Captain Phillips has good performances, but it's not one of the best films out there this year. I like that Brad Pitt is getting a producer nod for 12 years.

OUTSTANDING BRITISH FILM
Gravity, Alfonso Cuarón, David Heyman, Jonás Cuarón
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Justin Chadwick, Anant Singh, David M. Thompson, William Nicholson
Philomena, Stephen Frears, Gabrielle Tana, Steve Coogan, Tracey Seaward, Jeff Pope
Rush, Ron Howard, Andrew Eaton, Peter Morgan
Saving Mr Banks, John Lee Hancock, Alison Owen, Ian Collie, Philip Steuer, Kelly Marcel, Sue Smith
The Selfish Giant, Clio Barnard, Tracy O’Riordan

OUTSTANDING DEBUT BY A BRITISH WRITER, DIRECTOR OR PRODUCER
Colin Carberry (Writer), Glenn Patterson (Writer) for Good Vibrations
Kelly Marcel (Writer) for Saving Mr Banks
Kieran Evans (Director/Writer) for Kelly + Victor
Paul Wright (Director/Writer), Polly Stokes (Producer) for For Those in Peril
Scott Graham (Director/Writer) for Shell

FILM NOT IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
The Act of Killing, Joshua Oppenheimer, Signe Byrge Sørensen
Blue is the Warmest Colour, Abdellatif Kechiche, Brahim Chioua, Vincent Maraval
The Great Beauty, Paolo Sorrentino, Nicola Giuliano, Francesca Cima Metro Manila Sean Ellis, Mathilde Charpentier Wadjda Haifaa Al-Mansour, Gerhard Meixner, Roman Paul
Part of me wants to complain about The Hunt not being here, but for some reason I don't think it qualified for this years BAFTAS.

DOCUMENTARY
The Act of Killing, Joshua Oppenheimer
The Armstrong Lie, Alex Gibney
Blackfish, Gabriela Cowperthwaite
Tim’s Vermeer, Teller, Penn Jillette, Farley Ziegler
We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks, Alex Gibney
Yay for Blackfish!!

DIRECTOR
12 Years a Slave, Steve McQueen

I'm happy to see Marty in there.

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
American Hustle, Eric Warren Singer, David O. Russell
Blue Jasmine, Woody Allen
Gravity, Alfonso Cuarón, Jonás Cuarón
Inside Llewyn Davis, Joel Coen, Ethan Coen

I still see American Hustle as the winner here, but I bet the BAFTAS give the win to Gravity.

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
12 Years a Slave, John Ridley
Behind the Candelabra, Richard LaGravenese
Captain Phillips, Billy Ray
Philomena, Steve Coogan, Jeff Pope
The Wolf of Wall Street, Terence Winter
Seeing Behind the Candelabra surprised me. I guess it got a theatrical release in the UK?

LEADING ACTOR
Bruce Dern, Nebraska
Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years a Slave
Christian Bale, American Hustle
Leonardo DiCaprio, The Wolf of Wall Street
Tom Hanks, Captain Phillips
Leo! I'm still torn on who I want to win more, him or Chiwetel.

LEADING ACTRESS
Amy Adams, American Hustle
Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine
Emma Thompson, Saving Mr Banks
Judi Dench, Philomena
Sandra Bullock, Gravity
I'm so happy for Amy.

SUPPORTING ACTOR
Barkhad Abdi, Captain Phillips
Bradley Cooper, American Hustle
Daniel Brühl, Rush
Matt Damon, Behind the Candelabra
Michael Fassbender, 12 Years a Slave
Calling Matt Damon's role supporting in BTC is a joke. He was a lead. They could've given this nod to someone else. (Jonah Hill, maybe? Yes, I actually just said that.)

SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle
Julia Roberts, August: Osage County
Lupita Nyong’o, 12 Years a Slave
Oprah Winfrey, The Butler
Sally Hawkins, Blue Jasmine
I'm kind of shocked The Butler snuck in here. I haven't seen Blue Jasmine yet, but I'm always all for Sally Hawkins love. I still think this is Lupita's to win.

ORIGINAL MUSIC
12 Years a Slave, Hans Zimmer
The Book Thief, John Williams
Captain Phillips, Henry Jackman
Gravity, Steven Price
Saving Mr Banks, Thomas Newman

CINEMATOGRAPHY
12 Years A Slave, Sean Bobbitt
Captain Phillips, Barry Ackroyd
Gravity, Emmanuel Lubezki
Inside Llewyn Davis, Bruno Delbonnel

I still think Prisoners should be getting a cinematography nod at least. Here's holding out hope for the Oscars.

Captain Phillips, Christopher Rouse
Gravity Alfonso Cuarón, Mark Sanger
Rush Dan Hanley, Mike Hill
The Wolf of Wall Street, Thelma Schoonmaker

COSTUME DESIGN
American Hustle, Michael Wilkinson
Behind the Candelabra, Ellen Mirojnick

No Oz the Great and Powerful. They're my predicted winner.

  1. You're right that Behind the Candlebra got a theatrical release over here. Remember seeing posters for it everywhere.

Funnily enough, the only award that I am interested in seeing who wins is the Rising Star which, funnily enough, is the only award handed out by the public (who usually pick the ones that they are more familiar with, unfortunately, out of the bunch).

    1. I know, the person who wins the Rising Star is rarely the one I hope for the most.

  2. There were always category frauds with supporting/co-lead issue. I mean Damon is one thing, but Bruhl was even more of a co-lead. Still I'm super happy for all the nominations he is getting, I loved Rush.

    1. I still haven't seen Rush. It comes to Netflix next month, so I will catch it then.

  3. These were interesting and far more American centered than I expected. I really thought they would give us some left field nominations.

    1. Exactly. They're usually pretty notorious for that.

  4. Yeah, I'm shocked to see Oprah got a nom, I didn't think she was as great as what some others were saying. I wish Joaquin Phoenix made it to Best Actor for his performance in HER :(

    1. I enjoyed the Butler when I first saw it, but after I read all of the things they doctored in that film, I don't think I like it anymore, so I'm kind of glad it's fallen off the face of the awards circuit. (mostly)

  5. yeah i was confused by Candelabra too. Gravity and Blue Jasmine are magnificent so i am always happy to see them. clearly american hustle seems to be some kind of mainstream fave. i enjoyed it, but i feel like the praise is a bit overblown.

    1. I had a good time watching American Hustle. I think Jennifer Lawrence's praise is getting a bit overblown.

  6. I'm thrilled about the Wolf nominations, and it's awesome that The Selfish Giant, which is in my top 5, made the cut for Best British Film.
