Thursday Movie Picks: Black and White Movies After 1970

This week's theme from Wandering Through The Shelves is black and white movies made after 1970. I almost skipped this one because I had trouble finding movies that were entirely in black and white that I liked, so I kind of cheated a little.

1) Sin City
A few colors here and there, but mostly black and white so I think it counts. It's one of my all time favorites and is stunning to watch.

2) Clerks
This might not be everyone's type of film, but it's a good laugh.

3) Schindler's List

There was one red coat, this counts, right? This film is a masterpiece, but one I probably wouldn't want to watch again anytime soon. It's so sad.

  1. I haven't seen Clerks. I almost watched it one time, thinking it was Kids, and then I realized it wasn't so I skipped it. I should probably check it out. I had no idea it was in Black and White.

The other two are great picks. That stupid Dame movie soured my opinion or memory of the first Sin City a little bit, but I do remember LOVING it when it was first released. Schindler is a film I admire but can't love, outside of Fiennes' brilliant performance...like BRILLIANT!

    1. LOL, Clerks and Kids? How did you do that? I like Clerks, that film feels like it was made for about $100 but everything about it is so funny and charismatic.

I got to watch Schindler's List in my high school history class. That was so intense.

Dame was such a let down, but I love Sin City so much, Especially the directors cut where it shows all three stories separately. And they show a sped up version all shot against the green screen. It's fascinating.

    2. Me too, I didn't know Clerks was in black and white. It just didn't seem to have a premise that needed to be shot in black and white.

    3. It was shot in black and white because that's all Kevin Smith could afford.

  2. I enjoyed this theme, but it seems that lots of us have listed the same movies over and over. That means we have good taste, right?

  3. Frances Ha is one of my favorite B & W films of recent release. I'd definitely encourage you to see it, if you haven't already!

    1. I have seen it, and I enjoyed the film, but the black and white gimmick didn't work for me. I felt like they were trying to hard to be hipsters with it.

  4. Schindler's List is a masterpiece, full stop. As is Sin City, in its way. I haven't seen Clerks, but as a fan of the Jay and Silent Bob characters (in moderation), I'm sure I'll watch it one day.

    1. Jay and Silent Bob are best in small doses, IMO. They're good in Clerks. Sin City honestly deserved a visual effects Oscar nom, but man did Rodriguez and Miller piss off the Academy that year. It's a shame.

    1. I can definitely see why people don't like Kevin Smith. He's not a perfect filmmaker, but I've enjoyed more of his movies than I've hated them. Clerks is good. Not my favorite of his, but it's definitely up there.

Elijah Wood was badass in Sin City.

  6. Sin City and Schindler's List are both tremendous. Like you, I can't say I'm in a rush to see it again, though. I'm not big Clerks. Thought it was ok, but i dont get the hype. Well, except for that one scene -- 37!!!

    1. Clerks definitely isn't my favorite Kevin Smith movie (that would be Dogma) but it's definitely not everyone's cop of tea. Especially with how random it is.

  7. I haven't seen any of these three. Sin City isn't my kind of thing and when a friend who does like movies based on graphic novels hated it I decided to pass. Schindler is one of the few best picture winners I've yet to see, I keep putting it off because I know it will be gut wrenching and that kind of viewing experience isn't one I'm usually up for. Clerks I've debated about over the years, Kevin Smith is so variable and I have very little patience for Jay and Silent Bob but maybe I should just watch and fill that spot.

    1. I think Sin City is one of the best adaptations of a graphic novel out there. It's pretty brutal, but it's so good. I hope you give it a chance some day!

Schindler's List is really hard to watch, but it's brilliant.

  8. Great list! Oddly. I'd forgotten that Schindler's List was shot in black and white.

    1. Really? Ha. That red coat scene does stick out, so I can understand.

  9. I was very close to picking Schindler's List. Probably the most beautifully shot black-and-white film post 1970 actually. I totally agree on Clerks as you know. I have a very special attachment to that movie. I love Kevin Smith and don't care who knows it. His humor is exactly what I love. I have fallen out of love with Sin City over the years, but it is a sight to behold. Great picks!

  10. Love all three of your choices! Fiennes in Schindler's List is one of my all time fav performances

    1. He was so terrifying! I can't believe he didn't win the Oscar for that one.

  11. Funnily enough, I haven't actually seen any of these. Schindler's List was a candidate for my Blindspot List this year, but didn't make the final cut. I have also heard a lot of good things about Clerks.

    1. You should check out all three of these. Schinderl's List is a very well made film, but not something I'd want to watch over and over. It's so sad.

  12. Great stuff. Schindler's List is one of Spielberg's finest, and I doubt Robert Rodriguez will ever top Sin City.

    1. I don't think so either. Sin City will always be his best.
