Thursday Movie Picks: Alien Invasion of Earth

This week's theme from Wandering Through the Shelves is alien invasions of Earth! Before we get into this, if you're not participating in this awesome weekly series, you should be.

Admittedly, I'm not crazy about alien invasion movies, but there are a few I'm okay with. So that's what this list will be about. Films that are just "okay"

1) War of the Worlds

I know people kind of hated the remake, but I had a good time watching it. When I saw it in theaters, there was an insane thunder storm going on at the same time. My friends and I ran to my car in the midst of pouring rain, thunder, and lightening. Then as we were driving away, we saw someone we knew whose car was stuck in a massive puddle that we had to go push out. I won't forget it.

2) Mars Attacks

This movie is so stupid, but so funny. Terrible music defeats the aliens. You can't get much better than that.

3) The Faculty

This is one of the first R rated movies I can remember seeing in theaters. I remember my sister telling me something like "If you get scared you can go watch The Prince of Egypt again." (I think it was Prince of Egypt) I stuck it out, though. Writing about it now makes me kind of want to watch it again.

  1. All the best picks there! War of the World is a decent one, well, with family intrigue as awesome as the alien idea. The Faculty got awesome cast and Mars Attack was hilariously annoying. Love your picks!

  2. I still can't believe I'm not the only one who picked The Faculty. I didn't hate war of the Worlds at all. I thought it was a lot like Signs how it focused on one family's experience and drawing on the collective post-911 traumatic stress for some extra weight. Like signs, I also think it dropped the ball a little at the end though.

    1. The ending was definitely the weakest part, but I think it's far better than Signs.

  3. I loved War of the Worlds...until the last five minutes, which were so dumb. Like, when Tom Cruise reaches into the alien's butthole thing and then they all die from water or something like that I was like...WTF!

But until that point, it's pretty awesome, and Fanning is GOLD!

The Faculty making such a HUGE showing today was delightful, and whoever doesn't love Mar's Attacks is...out of their MIND!

    1. LOL Nice description of War of the Worlds. That's perfect. I know people bitched about Dakota's character being annoying, but it was the older son that was annoying. I wish an alien would've eaten him.

    2. Drew's description of WotW. I, too, eas loving it until the last few minutes. I'm shocked and very happy about all the love for The Faculty, this week. Sadly, I've yet to see Mars Attacks. Thanks for the reminder on that one.

  5. I did finally see the remake a few months back of War of the Worlds and found it inferior to the original. Of course the effects are great but it just didn't do much for me because they got rid of the plot and added all the effects instead. Love Mars Attacks-hahahaaa-It is so silly and it is based on an old comic strip. I love Sylvia Sidney's character as the old lady who loves Slim Whitman music and ends up saving the day. Whose head wouldn't explode listening to that?

    1. Yes! She was a standout. I think that was my favorite part of the film. I've never seen the original War of the Worlds.

  6. I almost went War of the Worlds, but I didn't want to overdo Cruise and Spielberg.

  7. Holy-moly The Faculty is the surprise title of the week. I liked it when I saw it but have never watched again, great cast though. I just watched Mars Attacks! this year. Parts were fun, Glenn Close..Sylvia Sidney the music, but overall it didn't thrill me. I liked this version of War of the Worlds and obviously it's more technically advanced then the original but I still like the earlier one better.

    1. Yeah, Mars Attacks definitely isn't for everyone, but it's got a nice B movie feel, and I like that.

  9. I kinda like War of the Worlds remake. It's not terrible and not boring, so that's a hell a lot more than one can say about most remakes

    1. I'm not sure if I'd like an older version of that movie. It needs good visual effects.
