Thursday Movie Picks: Storms/Adverse Weather

This week's theme from Wandering Through the Shelves is Storms. Sometimes Disaster films work, right? I decided to pick three that I had very strong reactions to. Reactions that consisted of Sadness, Humor, and Fear. Here we go.

1) The Impossible

Sadness - I have never been so thankful to watch a movie at home instead of a theater. I cried through this entire thing. Naomi Watts broke my heart. That little boy they saved broke my heart. I could cry again just thinking of it.

2) The Day After Tomorrow

Humor - Jake Gyllenhaal is STILL playing a teenager? (Donnie Darko fan) Wtf is with those wolves? Okay, the CGI in this movie was great, but then I get right back to wtf'ing.

3) Twister

Fear - The movie itself isn't scary, but the simulator at Universal Studios scared the shit out of me. I've seen enough tornadoes in real life and that felt just as real. Fuck that, 11 year old me nearly cried.

    1. I think so. I imagine it was the first film that came to mind for everyone. Flying cow gif deserves its own Oscar lol.

  3. Yup, WTF is about how I feel about TDAT. Twister is dumb fun. Never been in that simulator, though. And everyone is all abput The Impossible, today. Guess I have to see it.

    1. If you want to have a good cry, go for it lol. I'm sure if I was in that simulator now I'd think nothing of it, I remember my sister being really confused about me being afraid of it. She was like "You were literally on Tower of Terror yesterday." lol

  4. Like how you pointed out an emotion for each choice, nice touch.

The Impossible is a touch watch but very gripping with great work by all and those effects are overpowering. I've never been in the simulator but have been trapped in a minor tornado a few years ago and they are fearful things. Saw the movie in the theatre and it was quite the thrill ride at the time and still entertaining now. TDAT is one of my choices as well and seems to be the title of the week. It is absurd but I enjoy it nonetheless.

    Here's mine for the week:

Into the Storm (2014)-Soggy in every way movie about a mega-storm front that lays waste to a Midwest town. Like many current disaster movies this puts a group of people that the audience knows nothing about in peril and then expects them to be invested in their plight. Some good special effects but that’s about all. Starts out okay but quickly slips into absurdity.

The Day After Tomorrow (2004)-Big, dumb but fun cautionary tale. Climatologist Dennis Quaid and his team witness a huge crack in an ice shelf and warn the world authorities that it’s a sign of a coming cataclysm but no-one’s listening. Next thing you know superstorms start forming and causing havoc and who should be stuck right smack dab in the middle of the biggest? Why Quaid’s son Jake Gyllenhaal of course! Hits its fever pitch when Quaid outruns the ice age!

The Rains Came (1939)-In Ranchipur, India the faithless Lady Edwina Esketh (Myrna Loy) and her cruel husband Lord Esketh meet Major Rama Safti (Tyrone Power) a doctor and heir presumptive to the throne and Edwina renews her acquaintanceship with artist Tom Ransome (George Brent), a former lover. Bored she sets out to seduce the principled Safti as a distraction but finds herself falling in love. It’s high class soap opera with good performances until the seasonal rains come and then watch out! An earthquake hits during the heaviest downpour causing a dam to collapse followed by a cholera epidemic while the water keeps rising! Winner of the first Oscar given for special effects.

    1. I caught part of Into The Storm on HBO recently, it seemed pretty standard, nothing special, but nothing ridiculous. I have not seen The Rains Come. Thanks for sharing these!

  5. I've been putting off watching The Impossible since it's release because I know I'll just cry the whole time! This week's theme though is tempting me...

  6. I've never seen a Tornado in the flesh, I kinda, morbidly, would like to one day.

The Impossible (which I liked, but didn't include because I felt a big wave wasn't a 'weather event') and The Day After Tomorrow are popular choices.

    1. Like I said to Dan, far away, and not coming towards you lol. I think a tsunami counts enough for a weather even. It did ruin everything.

  7. I'm with Mayerla - I'd kind of almost like to see a real live tornado one day.

The Impossible was heartrending in the theater, with the giant picture and surround sound.... Really incredible.

LOVE that cow gif from Twister.

    1. They're fine if you're far away and it's not coming towards you lol. I've seen plenty, but never serious ones, thankfully. I wouldn't want to experience that.

  8. Great way to showcase different emotions for each film. Love The Impossible which was my. Pick as well. Naomi Watts is excellent in the film. TDAT is just silly but I like that flick. Twister is also silly and Hunt's. Character is one I. Want to. Slap. Funny, when the movie came out it was being shown in a nearby drive-in that is still in operation and has 4 screens. Anyway, there was a tornado that. Went through and knocked down the one screen....where twister was being shown. I have never been throug a tornado and final them scary as hell.

  9. The Impossible... oh yeah. That was powerful and I showed the film to my parents and they were shocked by it. The Day After Tomorrow was OK but Twister was pretty cool. Especially because of Philip Seymour Hoffman.
