Thursday Movie Picks: Sororities/Fraternities/School Secret Societies

This week's theme from Wandering Through the Shelves is Frats, sororities, and/or secret societies. When I was in junior high I thought it would be cool to be part of a sorority when I was in college. Then when I finally got there I realized that they were all kinds of fucking awful, at least at the college I went to. So it's only fitting that I find some awful movies I sat through to fit this theme.

1) Sorority Boys

Three guys get kicked out of their frat and decide to dress in drag and pledge to an "ugly girl" sorority. It manages to be both sexist and unfunny.

2) The House Bunny

A playboy bunny turns 27 and gets kicked out of the playboy mansion for being "too old" so she becomes a den mother to a sorority instead. There's a lot of funny people in this movie, unfortunately even they can't get any laughs from this atrocious script.

3) College

Three high school kids tour a college campus and spend the weekend at a frat party. The only reason I watched this in the first place was because Zach Cregger was in it and I loved him in The Whitest Kids U'Know, but God this was so bad. I don't even think I finished it.

  1. Well that's sort of a theme within the theme. Ha! I have seen Sorority Boys and yes it is just as stupid as you say.

The commercials for House Bunny just looked so appalling that I never had any interest in it. There was a TV movie back in the 70's named "Call Her Mom" where Connie Stevens became the house mother of a fraternity and had to put up with all kinds of crap from outside people because they couldn't believe a knockout (in that 70's way of frosted shag hairdos and pleather boots) could be a capable, intelligent woman who could handle the job, while keeping the guys in line. It was handled in a sitcom way but it was all about her strength and ability-that was 44 years ago (I saw it on YouTube) how the hell have we regressed to something like House Bunny?

I saw the commercials for College when it was out and like House Bunny they struck me as moronic and I kept away.

It seems it's tough to make a serious movie about fraternities/sororities without sensationalizing them but I did come up with one that tried to take a clear look at them. My other two are an enjoyable but preposterous thriller and a very fun musical with amazing production numbers.

The Skulls (2000)-Thinking it will help grease the wheels for his entrance into Harvard Law School Luke (Joshua Jackson) joins the secret fraternity at his college “The Skulls”. At first everything seems great but a series of disturbing incidents causes him to look for answers to the real purpose of the fraternity and suddenly he finds that his life might be in danger.

Fraternity Row (1977)-College Freshman Zac (Gregory Harrison) pledges a prestigious fraternity despite his girlfriend’s feeling that they are antiquated and discriminatory. Objecting to the brutality of hazing Zac, joined by some of the other pledges, rebels but the fraternity’s leader turns a deaf ear to their complaints leading to a terrible calamity. Scott Newman who plays the head of the fraternity was the son of Paul and died of a drug overdose not long after completion of this film.

Good News (1947)-It’s football season at good ol’ Tait College and Big Man On Campus Tommy Marlowe (Peter Lawford), the star quarterback, is torn between two sorority sisters, the gold digging Pat McClellan and wholesome, down to earth Connie Lane (June Allyson). Flirty Pat turns his head which causes him to treat Connie badly but when he flunks a test and may not be able to play the Big Game it’s Connie he turns to so that he can make the grade! Tuneful musical is an almost perfect example of MGM at its peak. The finale, The Varsity Drag and the earlier Pass That Peace Pipe, are studies in color coordination and dancing precision while remaining breezy delights.

    1. Yeah, the fact that House Bunny was supposed to be funny, it just completely missed the mark. I haven't heard of the picks you chose. Thank you for sharing!

  2. I surprisingly haven't seen any of these! I think I'd add Legally Blonde to this list, because that movie actually made Greek life look cool! Haha

  3. House Bunny is popular this week and thankfully I have not seen it nor any of the others. Too bad these movies were not "so bad they're good" movies

  4. Sorority Boys sounds like the sitcom that got cancelled about 3 guys who loose their jobs and dress in drag to get jobs because they claim all the women are getting the jobs..... ridiculous

The House Bunny is super popular today - who knew! :)

    1. I figured Legally Blonde or Old School would be popular today, granted a lot of people used them last week.

  5. College was fucking awful. Those guys from The Whitest Kids U Know aren't funny at all. We NIN fans really that Trent Reznor sketch for how bad it is.

The House Bunny I liked because of Anna Faris and Emma Stone. I actually like Sorority Boys because it's so bad, it's good. Plus, how can you not love the dildo fight scene?

    1. I actually love WKUK, they're hysterical most of the time. (But not in College) The Trent Reznor sketch makes me laugh because it's nothing now I picture him in real life.

Deathgasm had a superior dildo fight scene to Sorority Boys lol.

  6. I've avoided Sorority Boys. I'd say it was a wise choice. Unfortunately, I did watch House Bunny. Sigh. Never saw College. Doesn't sound like I'm missing anything.

    1. You didn't. I don't remember a single thing that happened in that movie.

  7. I've only seen The House Bunny and I completely agree with you, that film is so unfunny!

  8. Never had any desire to see Sorority Boys or College, but I thought The House Bunny really hit the "so dumb it's HILARIOUS" sweet spot.

It's strange, most of my girl friends who were in sororities in college really enjoyed it and only had good things to say, but from the outside, they really did look horrible.

  10. House Bunny is the only one I've seen and yep did not like it as well.
