Thursday Movie Picks: The Fashion World

This week's theme from Wandering Through the Shelves makes my wallet hurt. I wish I could afford to dress in designer clothes and have a fancy job to show them off. Alas, I just get to watch movies about it. Here are my favorites.

1) The Devil Wears Prada

I'm sure this one will be popular. I never expected to like a film like this. It looked so "meh" to me then I ended up absolutely loving it. Hathaway, Streep, and Blunt were so amusing during awards season too. I'll never forget them wondering aloud at the Oscars whether someone got Streep a latte or not.

2) The Bling Ring

The true story of some fashion obsessed teens that actually had the balls to rob celebrity houses. I watched the reality show Pretty Wild, which starred two of the people in the Bling Ring. It was trashy fun.

3) Funny Face

A bookstore worker meets a photographer who makes her into a model. A fun film with the charming Audrey Hepburn.

Comments

  1. I've only seen two of these but what terrific films they are.

Wouldn't be at all surprised if Devil Wears Prada is the title of the week. I didn't care much for Anne Hathaway in the film but I'm indifferent to her in the norm but both Meryl Streep, if she had won her third Oscar for this instead of the dreadful Iron Lady I wouldn't have carped, and Emily Blunt were phenomenal.

I thought of Funny Face too but it's the other one I'm assuming will be popular. A lovely film with Audrey captivating and Kay Thompson a stitch as the fashion editor. "Think Pink!"

The Bling Ring just looked like something that would give me a headache.

I did a documentary and then went over to the dark side of the fashion world.

Women He Undressed (2015)-Mix of documentary and reenactments tells the story of Australian born Hollywood wardrobe designer Orry-Kelly. THE major Warner Brothers designer throughout much of the Golden Age and a favorite of Bette Davis among others he also designed for films ranging from Some Like it Hot to Les Girls and Casablanca. Covers his often rocky early life-he was seriously involved with Cary Grant before either were famous, working in mob controlled nightclubs etc. though his successes and later struggles with alcohol laced throughout with interviews with those who knew and worked with him including Jane Fonda and Angela Lansbury. Directed by Gillian Armstrong.

The Eyes of Laura Mars (1978)-High fashion photography Laura Mars (Faye Dunaway) is much in demand for her provocative layouts that have a violent often blood splattered tinge. She is climbing ever higher until she suddenly starts seeing actual murders through the eyes of the killer and he seems to be moving closer and closer to her. Stylish, with a theme song sung by Barbra Streisand, but rather sick this provided an early spotlight role for Tommy Lee Jones.

Strip Nude for Your Killer (1975)-Italian giallo film of a leather clad and motorcycle helmeted killer who is wreaking havoc within the Albatross modeling agency systemically knocking off nearly everyone associated with it. Unsurprisingly based on the title full to the brim with nudity both female and to a lesser degree male as well grisly knife killings all in gaudily lit 70’s colors. A definite precursor to the slasher film craze that swept American films a few years later this bloodbath is set to a striking jazz score.

  2. I picked Funny Face as well and it seems to be the popular choice! Who knew that would be the one but I think The Devil Wears Prada will also be popular today as well. I am not into The Bling Ring so probably will skip it-those girls need a kick in the ass:)

  4. Yay for Funny Face! LOVE The Devil Wears Prada, I didn't pick it specifically because I figured everyone else would lol. I think The Bling Ring is kind of brilliant. Who knew Emma Watson had THAT performance in her?!?!?

Funny Face has been selected a lot, so I should add to the list.

  7. Prada is everywhere this week, no surprise. Love Streep in it, but it's meh as a whole. The Bling Ring didn't work for me. Need to see Funny Face.

  8. I'm not surprised about The Devil Wears Prada as it is a popular choice while I didn't think about The Bling Ring though it is a fashion film that I do own (along w/ many of Sofia's films) on DVD. Funny Face I definitely need to check out.

  9. We got same pick! TDWP is definitely the first to come in my mind when talking about this theme.

The Bling Ring, same as The Neon Demon in some other post, also gave me some ambivalent feeling. I didn't really stun me although I really hoped it worked.

  12. I wouldn't have thought Bling Ring for this theme but it does kinda work. Aha! Devil Wears Prada - emily blunt was brilliant but apart from her, I didn't get along with it.
