Thursday Movie Picks: Amusement Parks

This week Wanderer asks us to talk about amusement parks. I've always been a fan of those. Sure, they're over priced but I like to wander around and eat fair food. Here are three of my favorite films that take place at amusement parks, although I would never want to visit these.

1) Zombieland

It's the zombie apocalypse and the place to be is at an amusement park. Sure, there's zero logic in that idea but why not ride that roller coaster one last time?

2) Jurassic Park

I love dinosaurs. I loved learning about them as a kid. If I was offered the chance to go to an amusement park where they recreated dinosaurs? Fuck no. I know what's going to happen. (it involves being eaten)

3) Adventureland

This park isn't as stressful as the other ones. It's just basic to the point where the entire staff is bored. Still, Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart have great chemistry.

  1. OMG! Guess what?? We match! Yahoo!! I picked Zombieland as well. I do enjoy the Jurassic Park series because this dinosaurs look so real and I am with you...I would never go. I haven't seen the last film which sounds nice except for the 2 leads who seem to annoy me. I also love amusement parks

  3. I'm guessing Jurassic Park will be popular today and rightly so. It's a well made exciting and scary thrill ride which is just perfect for its concept. I'm with you about visiting a real life one though!

I didn't love nor hate Adventureland. It was just sort of there the fact that it costarred two of my least favorite performers didn't help.

Haven't seen Zombieland but it is popping up all over the place today. Again it stars Eisenberg so that alone will keep me away.

I'm not much of a horror fan nor a zombie fancier but did end up with one among my picks just because it is SO freaking strange. It does stretch the theme a bit since it's set in a carnival but they and amusement parks all fall under the same category I think. My others take much different approaches to the traditional parks.

Rollercoaster (1977)-After a rollercoaster derails due to a device placed on the track the major amusement park owners receive a taped message from the mad bomber (Timothy Bottoms) that unless they pay him a million dollars the carnage will continue. Safety inspector Harry Calder (George Segal) who had cleared the first coaster and was investigating the crash is pulled in by FBI agent Hoyt (Richard Widmark) when the nameless young man demands Harry deliver the extortion money to his next target or he’ll detonate another bomb. Suspenseful but not quite the experience it was in theatres where it was presented in Sensurround.

The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies!!? (1964)-I really can’t better this IMDB description: "Jerry falls in love with a stripper he meets at a carnival. Little does he know that she is the sister of a gypsy fortune teller whose predictions he had scoffed at earlier. The gypsy turns him into a zombie and he goes on a killing spree."

    Or the tagline:
SEE: the dancing girls of the carnival murdered by the incredible night creatures of the midway! SEE: the hunchback of the midway fight a duel of death with the mixed up zombies! SEE: the world's first monster musical!

It’s not good but it’s unique!

40 Pounds of Trouble (1962)-Sixties version of the Damon Runyon story Little Miss Marker about a little girl left in Lake Tahoe casino manager’s Steve McCluskey (Tony Curtis) care as a hold against the debt owed by her father. When the father is rubbed out Steve with the help of the casino’s singer Chris Lockwood (Suzanne Pleshette) has to look after the tyke and dodge various people after him for different reasons. They decide to take the little one to Disneyland (at this point open less than 10 years) and between rides are chased through the park offering a pretty complete picture of what the place looked like in the 60’s. Cute comedy where unsurprisingly being mostly a Disney movie all ends happily.

  6. I absolutely love Jurassic Park and Zombieland. Great picks. I thought Adventureland was decent, too.

  7. I thought about Zombieland this week but I thought two Eisenbergs was just too much.. so I kept it for another theme. Jurasic Park was also an obvious choice so I tried to stay away from it. :D

  8. Great picks! These are all awesome. Adventureland is one of my top favorites 'cause it was filmed in my hometoown at Kennywood. I grew up going to that park all the time.

  9. Match on all except Jurassic Park. The whole concept of a jurassic park is just so misguided...even the herbivores could accidentally squish humans.
