2017 Emmy Predictions: Who will win, who should win.

With the Emmys coming up on September 17th it's now time for me to make my mostly incorrect predictions! Seriously, the Emmys are weird and Game of Thrones isn't eligible so there goes the easy win. Below are my predictions on who will win, and in some cases, who should win.

OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES
Better Call Saul
The Crown
The Handmaid’s Tale
House of Cards
Stranger Things
This Is Us
Westworld
Who will win: The Handmaid's Tale
Who should win: Westworld
I don't watch House of Cards or This Is Us so I can't speak for those two shows, but I'd be happy for a win for any of the other shows. At the beginning of this year, I would've said The Crown would take it easily, but The Handmaid's Tale has a ton of buzz behind it and I can see it being rewarded.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A DRAMA  SERIES
Sterling K. Brown, This Is Us
Anthony Hopkins, Westworld
Bob Odenkirk, Better Call Saul
Matthew Rhys, The Americans
Liev Schreiber, Ray Donovan
Kevin Spacey, House of Cards
Milo Ventimiglia, This Is Us
Who will win: Kevin Spacey
Who should win: Hopkins, Odenkirk, or probably Brown.
With last year's winner not even nominated I see the Emmys playing it safe here. Spacey has never won an Emmy, I can see them changing that this year.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES
Viola Davis, How To Get Away With Murder
Claire Foy, The Crown
Elisabeth Moss, The Handmaid’s Tale
Keri Russell, The Americans
Evan Rachel Wood, Westworld
Robin Wright, House of Cards
Who will win: Elisabeth Moss
Who should win: Evan Rachel Wood or Claire Foy.
Claire Foy already has a Globe and a SAG for her role in The Crown but she wasn't competing against Emmy darling Elisabeth Moss. If my prediction for THT getting a lot of love is right, she'll get it too. Though if I had it my way, Evan would be going home with this.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES
Ann Dowd, The Handmaid’s Tale
Samira Wiley, The Handmaid’s Tale
Uzo Aduba, Orange Is The New Black
Millie Bobby Brown, Stranger Things
Chrissy Metz, This Is Us
Thandie Newton, Westworld
Who will and should win: Thandie Newton
Even with the Handmaid's Tale love, I think Newton will walk away with this. Though the Emmys could want to be a bit edgy and give it to young Millie Bobby Brown.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
Jonathan Banks, Better Call Saul
John Lithgow, The Crown
Mandy Patinkin, Homeland
Michael Kelly, House of Cards
David Harbour, Stranger Things
Ron Cephas Jones, This Is Us
Jeffrey Wright, Westworld
Who will win: John Lithgow
Who should win: Jeffrey Wright
With no Handmaid's Tale in this category, The Crown will likely prevail. I hope Wright wins, he was one of my favorites on Westworld.

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES
Alison Wright, The Americans
Alexis Bledel, The Handmaid’s Tale
Cicely Tyson, How to Get Away With Murder
Ann Dowd, The Leftovers
Laverne Cox, Orange Is The New Black
Shannon Purser, Stranger Things
Who will win: Shannon Purser
Who should win: Alexis Bledel.
Just watch fucking Barb win this. Just watch.

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
Ben Mendelsohn, Bloodline
BD Wong, Mr. Robot
Hank Azaria, Ray Donovan
Denis O’Hare, This Is Us
Brian Tyree Henry, This Is Us
Gerald McRaney, This Is Us
Who will win: Ben Mendelsohn
Who should win: BD Wong
Ben Mendelsohn won an Emmy for this role in the supporting category last year so I suppose he could take it again here. This is Mr. Robot's sole acting nomination and I'd love for it to get a win here.

OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES
Atlanta
black-ish
Master of None
Modern Family
Silicon Valley
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Veep
Who will win: Veep
Who should win: Veep
I'm bias so I always pick Veep. I think if this were the Globes, black-ish or Atlanta would have a good shot, but Emmys are creatures of habit, so Veep will win again.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES
Pamela Adlon, Better Things
Jane Fonda, Grace & Frankie
Allison Janney, Mom
Ellie Kemper, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Julie Louis-Dreyfus, Veep
Tracee Ellis Ross, black-ish
Lily Tomlin, Grace & Frankie
Who will and should win: Queen Julia Louis-Dreyfus

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Anthony Anderson, black-ish
Aziz Ansari, Master of None
Zach Galifianakis, Baskets
Donald Glover, Atlanta
William H. Macy, Shameless
Jeffrey Tambor, Transparent
Who will win: Jeffrey Tambor
Who should win: Donald Glover
I'd be shocked if the Emmys changed their mind here. Tambor will take it again.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES
Leslie Jones, Saturday Night Live
Kate McKinnon, Saturday Night Live
Vanessa Bayer, Saturday Night Live
Kathryn Hahn, Transparent
Judith Light, Transparent
Anna Chlumsky, Veep
Who will and should win: Anna Chlumsky
Bold prediction here, but all those other votes have to cancel each other out, right? Anna might be in it to win it this year.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Louie Anderson, Baskets
Ty Burrell, Modern Family
Alec Baldwin, Saturday Night Live
Tituss Burgess, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Tony Hale, Veep
Matt Walsh, Veep
Who will win: Alec Baldwin
Who should win: Tony Hale
Baldwin's dumpster fire impression is so well received that I think he'll win. (Then said dumpster fire will rage tweet about it at 3:00 am)

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES
Wanda Sykes, black-ish
Carrie Fisher, Catastrophe
Becky Ann Baker, Girls
Angela Bassett, Master of None
Kristen Wiig, Saturday Night Live
Melissa McCarthy, Saturday Night Live
Who will win: Melissa McCarthy
Who should win: McCarthy or Carrie Fisher
The only thing working against Carrie Fisher is I don't think many people saw Castastrophe. Everyone saw McCarthy on SNL.

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Riz Ahmed, Girls
Matthew Rhys, Girls
Dave Chappelle, Saturday Night Live
Lin-Manuel Miranda, Saturday Night Live
Tom Hanks, Saturday Night Live
Hugh Laurie, Veep
Who will win: Hugh Laurie
Who should win: Laurie or Ahmed
I'd be happy with either of those two winning, but I think there will be a lot of cancelling each other out here as well.

OUTSTANDING TV MOVIE
Black Mirror (“San Junipero”)
Dolly Parton’s Christmas Of Many Colors: Circle Of Love
Sherlock: The Lying Detective
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
The Wizard of Lies
Who will and should win: Black Mirror.
This still should not be in this category, but fuck it.

OUTSTANDING LIMITED SERIES
Big Little Lies
Fargo
Feud: Bette and Joan
Genius
The Night Of
Who will win: Big Little Lies
Who should win: Any of them except Genius (which I haven't seen) they're all worthy.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A LIMITED SERIES OR MOVIE
Carrie Coon, Fargo
Felicity Huffman, American Crime
Nicole Kidman, Big Little Lies
Jessica Lange, Feud: Bette and Joan
Susan Sarandon, Feud: Bette and Joan
Reese Witherspoon, Big Little Lies
Who will win: Felicity Huffman
Who should win: Any of them.
I think between Feud and BLL there will be some cancelling, though Nicole Kidman feels like she could still happen. While Fargo is the far better show, I think they'll play it safe and go with Huffman

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A LIMITED SERIES OR MOVIE
Riz Ahmed, The Night Of
Benedict Cumberbatch, Sherlock: The Lying Detective
Robert De Niro, The Wizard of Lies
Ewan McGregor, Fargo
Geoffrey Rush, Genius
John Turturro, The Night Of
Who will win: Ewan McGregor
Who should win: Riz Ahmed
Riz should take this but I think too many people will be splitting between he and John. Fargo has to win somewhere.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A LIMITED SERIES OR MOVIE
Regina King, American Crime
Laura Dern, Big Little Lies
Shailene Woodley, Big Little Lies
Judy Davis, Feud: Bette and Joan
Jackie Hoffman, Feud: Better and Joan
Michelle Pfeiffer, The Wizard of Lies
Who will win: Regina King
Who should win: Shailene Woodley
I think Regina will repeat here, even though Woodley and Hoffman gave really good performances.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A LIMITED SERIES OR MOVIE
Alexander Skarsgård, Big Little Lies
David Thewlis, Fargo
Alfred Molina, Feud: Bette and Joan
Stanley Tucci, Feud: Bette and Joan
Bill Camp, The Night Of
Michael Kenneth Williams, The Night Of
Who will win: Alexander Skarsgard
Who should win: Any
Feud and Night Of will cancel, so that leaves BLL and Fargo and Alexander is far better than Thewlis.

OUTSTANDING VARIETY TALK SERIES
Full Frontal With Samantha Bee
Jimmy Kimmel Live
Last Week Tonight With John Oliver
The Late Late Show With James Corden
The Late Show With Stephen Colbert
Real Time With Bill Maher
Who will and should win: Last Week Tonight:

  1. GO EVAN!!!!!!! I love reading her tweets. Especially the post about Charlottesville and what she had to tell her son. That actually made me cry. Plus, I like seeing her funny videos.

    1. I've heard really good things about him in Bloodline but I've never seen the show.

  3. Since I don't get HBO or Netflix or any other streaming shows, I am mostly at a loss here. I do have a WTF moment seeing Sherlock, which is excellent up against Dolly...WTF?? Am I the only one or should Mandy Patinkin get bitch-slapped? I think This Is Us will make it big so will Veep and Donald Trump's performance in this dark comedy about the White House. Oh wait, the last one is real.....ughhhhh
