Thursday Movie Picks: TV Edition - Friendship

It's the last TMP of 2017 and we're finishing off with another TV edition. I love that Wanderer added these to the mix this year. This week we're talking about Friendship and I picked shows that the friends went through their ups and downs, but ultimately remained together.

1) Sherlock

The ultimate bromance. I think Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were perfectly cast here. Even if the last series kind of sucked, I can't help but adore the three that came before that.

2) South Park

Oh these boys, forever 4th graders getting into shit and teaching us lessons. I love that I've sort of grown up with this show. It always makes me laugh

3) That 70's Show

I used to be addicted to this show before the later seasons got awful. I always enjoyed watching Eric and his gang.

  3. I never watched any of these regularly but I've seen eps of all three.

I'm not much for Cumberbatch, I liked him in Imitation Game but not much else so I never got into Sherlock though I like the concept.

That 70's Show I would glance at every now and then but it didn't work too well for me.

I detest all things South Park!

So, so, so many things to choose from this week I just went with three female driven shows that I was a fan of.

Desperate Housewives (2004-2012)-On a quiet day on the quiet suburban street of Wisteria Lane housewife Mary Alice Young picks up a gun and blows her brains out. After that less than lovely introduction Mary Alice becomes our guide and narrator through the wacky often chaotic lives of her group of women friends Susan, Lynette, Gabrielle, Bree and for a while their fremeny Edie (Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Eva Longoria, Marcia Cross and Nicolette Sheridan) who all reside on the same street. Through the eight years the series ran the women at times were at odds but when push came to shove their friendship remained strong.

The Golden Girls (1985-1992)-Four mature women (three widows & a divorcee), man hungry Southerner Blanche Deveraux (Rue McClanahan), naïve Midwesterner Rose Nyland (Betty White), New Yorker Dorothy Zbornak (Beatrice Arthur) and her mother Sophia Petrillo (Estelle Getty) share Blanche’s home and each other’s lives in the Miami suburbs. Over many cheesecakes the quartet talk about everything under the sun including aging, sex, artificial insemination and a myriad of other things interlaced with Rose’s often idiotic hometown Saint Olaf stories. They bicker, argue and fight but consistently support each other when it really matters. What makes this so special and constantly rewatchable is that four of the best comedic actresses that ever lived interact in every episode like a well-oiled machine.

Laverne & Shirley (1976-1983)-Slapstick shenanigans of two Milwaukee brewery workers and best friends Laverne DeFazio (Penny Marshall) and Shirley Feeney (Cindy Williams). A succession of predicaments happen weekly which require the girls to extricate themselves from in some outlandish fashion as their strange upstairs neighbors Lenny & Squiggy (Michael McKean & David Lander) pop in and out along with Shirley’s sometimes boyfriend Carmine “The Big Ragoo” Ragusa (Eddie Mekka).

    1. Aww I used to watch Laverne and Shirley when it was on Nick and Nite! I had no idea it was Happy Days spin off, then Fonzie randomly showed up in an episode. Blew my little mind. lol

  5. LOVE South Park and That '70s Show. South Park still makes me laugh pretty consistently - when Trey and Matt are on their game, it's the best satire on TV.

Sherlock I like, but I often find it far too pleased with itself. It's rather show-offy in a way that feels untrue to the Sherlock Holmes I know and love. But it can still be fun.

    1. It did get up it's own ass a bit, especially in this last season. I was so disappointed in it.

  6. South Park is a show I love. I also love That 70s Show except for that awful final season. Yes, Danny Masterson is a piece of shit and so is Ashton Kutcher for being a dumbass.
