Thursday Movie Picks: Long Awaited Sequels

This week's theme from Wandering Through the Shelves is a long time coming... Long awaited sequels! I used The Force Awakens in an earlier pick, even though it would've fit here perfectly. Since I can't go with one of my favorite franchises, here's three other sequels I enjoy

1) Blade Runner 2049

It's ballsy as hell to do a sequel 35 years after the original which arguably wasn't that popular in the first place. But I liked 2049 far more than the original and it was beautifully shot. Roger Deakins is a gem.

2) Finding Dory

14 Years after Finding Nemo we finally get to find Dory. I actually like this one a bit more than the original. It was one of those films my son had to watch every day for three months straight and it didn't drive me insane. That's always a plus.

3) Mad Max: Fury Road

This counts, right? There were a lot of Mad Max sequels but in my opinion, this one is the gold standard. I never expected to enjoy this film and it was wonderful.

Comments

  1. I likewise was that enthused about the original Blade Runner so I've never had the slightest desire to see the new one.

With Finding Dory you know me and animation. I'll never see it.

I have seen Fury Road and while I didn't love it as much as everyone else seems too it was a decent adventure flick with a good cast. Once was probably enough for me though.

It's been my experience that most long delayed sequels are a letdown when they finally appear. I know that was the case with my first and third but my second, probably because no one was screaming for it so expectations were lower, turned out okay.

The Godfather: Part III (1990)-Long aborning (16 years between this and Part II) wrap up of the Corleone saga isn’t terrible but a mere shadow compared to the first two. A HUGE weak point is the decision by Coppola to cast his daughter Sofia (a decent director but an atrocious actress) in a key role.

The Rescuers Down Under (1990)-Thirteen years after The Rescuers the R.A.S. (Rescue Aid Society) sends their top two agent mice Bernard (Bob Newhart) and Miss Bianca (Eva Gabor) down under to save a Golden Eagle from the evil trapper McLeash (George C. Scott). So they hop on their trusty albatross Wilbur (John Candy) and are off on their big adventure.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)-Nineteen long years after Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade came this uninspired follow-up. It not that the film is horrible but for a Spielberg adventure, especially one with Ford in this role, it’s uninspired. It’s nice to see Karen Allen back in the fold but the idea that she and Ford would produce Shia LeBeouf (!!) takes the film even further into the negative category.

    1. I've seen 2/3 of your picks this week! I really liked Rescuers Down Under, though I always thought the first one was actually the sequel when I was a kid because I never saw it until a few years after Down under. Crystal Skull was just meh. I didn't think it was terrible, but nothing special.

I have yet to completely tackle the Godfather trilogy.

  2. Fury Road! God it's such a masterpiece. I doubt we are ever getting a sequel to it, though :(

    1. I'm okay with that personally because I really liked how it ended before and I don't want a Soldado situation lol

  3. Good picks. Hopefully, I'll be watching 2049 this weekend. I really liked Finding Dory, but not anywhere near Nemo for me. Fury Road is just fantastic.

  4. Blade Runner 2049 and Mad Max: Fury Road are fucking great. I haven't seen Finding Dory yet but I hope to rectify that. I went on a completely different take for my picks as it relates to long-awaited sequels.... that sucked!

    1. I'm glad Deakins finally won that Oscar that he should've had about four times before it. lol. I hate that they won Visual Effects over War for the Planet of the Apes though.

  6. I'm with Courtney, Blade Runner 2049 was kinda boring. I loved Fury Road and Finding Dory was really nice.

  7. Mad Max counts!!! Like, in two lists, so yeah, it counts. :D Good thing we match too, I like seeing Fury Road love out there!

I didn't include Blade Runner 2049 because I wasn't the biggest fan of it, but it was still pretty.

Oh and I still haven't seen Dory... whoops.

  8. Blade Runner 2049 is one I want to see. Eventually I will get to Finding Dory, even though I am not really a fan of Finding Nemo. Mad Max: Fury Road - didn't care for the story, but it had great stunts and looked great visually.
