2020 Academy Awards Predictions: Who Will Win, Who Should Win

Best Picture
Ford v Ferrari
The Irishman
Jojo Rabbit
Joker
Little Women
Marriage Story
1917
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Parasite
Who will win: 1917
Who should win: Parasite
I think 1917 is a wonderful film that deserves its Best Picture nomination..but Parasite deserves this win. We're far overdue for a foreign film to take the top price and what better film to win than Parasite? One that absolutely deserves it.

Best Director
Martin Scorsese - The Irishman
Todd Phillips - Joker
Sam Mendes - 1917
Quentin Tarantino - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Bong Joon Ho - Parasite
Who will win: Sam Mendes
Who should win: Bong Joon Ho
I won't be mad when Mendes wins, because 1917 is wonderful, but again, I just prefer Bong and Parasite.

Best Actor
Antonio Banderas - Pain and Glory
Leonardo DiCaprio  - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Adam Driver - Marriage Story
Joaquin Phoenix - Joker
Jonathan Pryce - The Two Popes
Who will win: Joaquin Phoenix
Who shoul win: Adam Driver
I've been over this several times. Joker is trash, Phoenix isn't good in it, but he's somehow winning over this masterclass performance Driver turned in. *heavy sigh*

Best Actress
Cynthia Erivo - Harriet
Scarlett Johansson - Marriage Story
Saorise Ronan - Little Women
Charlize Theron - Bombshell
Renee Zellweger - Judy
Who will win: Renee Zellweger
Who should win: Cynthia Erivo
I'm so bored with the acting categories this year. So many amazing performances were left out. Erivo is the best here but she won't be award for it.

Supporting Actor
Tom Hanks - A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
Anthony Hopkins - The Two Popes
Al Pacino - The Irishman
Joe Pesci  - The Irishman
Brad Pitt - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Who will and should win: Brad Pitt
I'm fine with this win. To be honest aside from Pitt and Hanks I'm just not interested in this category at all.

Supporting Actress
Kathy Bates - Richard Jewel
Laura Dern - Marriage Story
Scarlett Johansson  - Jojo Rabbit
Florence Pugh - Little Women
Margot Robbie - Bombshell
Who will win: Laura Dern
Who should win: Florence Pugh or Margot Robbie.
Dern is great and I'll be happy for her, but I think Pugh and Robbie's roles were stronger.

Adapted Screenplay
Taika Waititi - Jojo Rabbit
Steve Zaillian - The Irishman
Anthony McCarten - The Two Popes
Greta Gerwig - Little Women
Todd Phillips and Scott Silver - Joker
Who will win: Little Women
Who should win: Taika Waititi
I think Gerwig has enough support behind her to win this and even though I think she did a great job, I just prefer Waititi's film.

Best Original Screenplay
Rian Johnson - Knives Out
Noah Baumbach - Marriage Story
Sam Mendes and Krysty Wilson-Cairns - 1917
Quentin Tarantino - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won - Parasite
Who will win: Quentin Tarantino
Who should win: Bong Joon Ho or Rian Johnson
I'm still a bit unsure of this. I would love if Parasite won here because then it would go towards it being a Best Picture winner but I think Quentin will get it based on name recognition and the fact that his film was about Hollywood.

Animated Feature
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
I Lost My Body
Klaus
Missing Link
Toy Story 4
Who will win:Toy Story 4
Who should win: How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
I'm actually very iffy on this. I have no idea who is going to win, I just know the one I want to win the most won't.

International Feature Film
Corpus Christi
Honeyland
Les Miserables
Pain and Glory
Parasite
Who will and should win: Parasite
No competition here. In a perfect world, it would win this AND Best Picture.

Best Documentary
American Factory
The Cave
Edge of Democracy
For Sama
Honeyland
Who will win: American Factory
Who should win: For Sama
As of this writing, I've only seen American Factory which I didn't care for at all. and For Sama, which I really enjoyed but I don't see winning since we've recently had other winners about the war in Syria even though this is a fresh voice.

Best Cinematography
The Irishman
Joker
The Lighthouse
1917
Once Upon A Time in Hollywood
Who will and should win: 1917

Best Costume Design
The Irishman
Jojo Rabbit
Joker
Little Women
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Who will and should win: Jojo Rabbit
Ultimately I think since OUATIH is going to win more than one Oscar it has the edge here but since Jojo Rabbit won the Costume Guild, I'm going to swing for the fences and go with them.

Film Editing
Ford vs. Ferrari
The Irishman
Jojo Rabbit
Joker
Parasite
Who will win: Ford v Ferrari
Who should win: Parasite

Makeup and Hairstyling
Bombshell
Joker
Judy
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil
1917
Who will and should win: Bombshell
Just LOOK at Charlize Theron

Original Score
Joker
Little Women
Marriage Story
1917
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
Who will and should win: 1917.
I'm swinging for the fences here. I know Joker has a lot of momentum but I think 1917 might prevail.

Original Song
"I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away,” Toy Story 4
"I’m Gonna Love Me Again,” Rocketman
"I’m Standing With You,” Breakthrough
"Into the Unknown,” Frozen 2
"Stand Up,” “Harriet
Who will win:I'm Gonna Love Me Again
Who should win: Stand Up
I want Erivo to get closer to that EGOT. Truthfully, most of these songs are just fine and none of them are as good as Glasgow from Wild Rose.

Production Design
The Irishman
Jojo Rabbit
1917
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Parasite
Who will win: OUATIH
Who should win: Parasite
God, I hope I'm wrong about all these OUATIH wins. To be fair, the production design was really good but PARASITE.

Sound Editing
Ford v Ferrari
Joker”
1917
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
Who will and should win: 1917

Sound Mixing
Ad Astra
Ford vs. Ferrari
Joker
1917
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Who will and should win: 1917
Until recently I was sure Ford vs Ferrari would get the sound nominations easily but then 1917 turned into such a beast.

Visual Effects
Avengers: Endgame
The Irishman
The Lion King
1917
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
Who will and should win: Avengers: Endgame
I refuse to predict anything else, though Scorcese is probably begging voters to go for his movie instead of the "theme park"

Documentary Short Subject
In the Absence
Learning to Skateboard in a War Zone If You’re a Girl
Life Overtakes Me
St. Louis Superman
Walk Run Cha-Cha
Who will win: Walk, Run, Cha-cha
Who should win: In The Absence
I haven't seen St. Louis Superman but In The Absence is the strongest of the other four, but I think Walk, Run Cha-Cha takes it for having a less bleak story.

Animated Short Film
Daughter
Hair Love
Kitbull
Memorable
Sister
Who will and should win: Hair Love
I have seen all of these and even though there's some very good stop motion animation here, none felt as perfect as Hair Love.

Live Action Short Film
Brotherhood
Nefta Football Club
The Neighbor’s Window
Saria
A Sister
Who will and should win: The Neighbor's Window
Saria felt more like a wikipedia entry than movie. Brotherhood was a wasted opportunity. Nefta Football club was cute and A Sister is very tense, but The Neighbor's Window felt like the most well rounded of the four I saw. I cried like a baby.

    1. That would be awful but still better than Joker lol

  2. I am looking forward to the Oscars because I am going with a friend to a theatre for an Oscar Party. They will have a red carpet and want people to dress up...I wish I could find a swan outfit. I pray Joker doesn’t win because the more I th8nk of that film the angrier I get that I was being manipulated to want to care for that idiot. I think he is creepy so the acting wasn’t much a stretch. Train Eggerton should have been nominated. Of films you have seen who would you want to win even if they were not nominated?

    1. Oh that sounds like fun! I've never been to an Oscar party. Taron should've been. How Rami Malek won and Taron didn't even get a nomination makes no sense.

  3. I'm in total agreement with a lot of your choices though I haven't seen a lot of the short films except for Kitbull which I liked a lot. I would be happy if Adam Driver and Bong Joon-Ho won some awards. I would be even happier is Scarlett won as I would like her to go Stone Cold and ask someone BRING ME SOME DAMN BEERS!!! and do some guzzling on beer or better yet...

A little bit of the bubbly...

    1. I prefer what Scarlett did in Marriage Story to what Zellweger did in Judy tbh.

  4. I agree with being bored with the acting categories. I honestly have almost zero desire to watch the oscars this year (though I will. sigh). Everything seems pretty much set, IMO. I don't predict many surprises.

    1. I'll watch because I always do, but this is my least favorite Oscar season I've been through by far, which is a shame because some filmmakers, actors and writers I truly love are apart of it.

  5. Good stuff. I guess I'm a bit different on the acting categories. I think good cases could be made for each frontrunner. I just wish there was more drama. Knowing how they will all turn out is kinda a bummer. I do think you're right with a lot of your predictions including Best Picture. But there's something that makes me think Parasite has a shot. Anyway, I guest appeared on a show to talk Oscar predictions that should go up in a day or two. We share many of the same.

    1. That's awesome! Yeah, even when I like an acting win, without the drama it is boring. The best years are when the same people don't win everything.

If Parasite pulls a Best Picture upset I will scream with joy.

  6. This year is a mess so I don't even know...
