Thursday Movie Picks: Globetrotting Films

This week's theme from Wandering Through The Shelves are those films that shoot in multiple locations across the world. This has to be an actor's dream right? Getting to work AND see the world? This is what I came up with .

1) Inception

Inception takes us to France, Australia, and several dreams in between. This film is very high up on my favorites list.

2) Skyfall

Fun fact about me; I don't like James Bond films. Skyfall remains the only one I've watched from start to finish in one sitting...but I did like it. The cinematography was wonderful and of course Bond globe trots in this.

3) The Rundown

I got a little stuck on my third pick but after browsing through my letterboxd, I landed on this 2003 film starring The Rock and Seann William Scott. I remember appreciating it as a teen for SWS's gratuitous shirtless shot while swimming in an underground river* but I also remember they jumped around a bit in this film too. Starting in the U.S and moving on to the Amazon.

*I'm not kidding, look at this. Why was this in the film? because the studio said "Teenage girls in the early 2000's, tonight you feast."

  1. Inception is terrific. I don't remember much about Skyfall other Bardem being fantastic in it but it was probably one of my favourites.

  2. Inception is a great catch! They certainly do jump around both in and out of sleep. It is highly rewatchable and Tom Hardy is an absolute delight in it. So loose and charming. JGL makes a strong impression too but it's really Hardy's film.

I wouldn't say I'm an ardent Bond fan but I've grown to like them more as the years have passed. I think I've seen them all and while Sean Connery will always be the real 007 for me Daniel Craig does an excellent job with the role. Skyfall was a terrific chapter in the series.

I know I saw The Rundown and thought it was a fun time passer at the time I have nearly zero memory of the actual storyline.....I could say that about all The Rock's movies though. I think producers after years of having beautiful girls in wet skimpy swimsuits for men to ogle finally realized that a well placed and equally glistening himbo might draw some female customers.

My first thought was Around the World in 80 Days but while I love the Jules Verne story I hate that movie and consider it the worst best picture winner ever. So I moved on to three from the 60's that I was able to tie together.

The Great Race (1965)-Spoof of old time serials with the hero-The Great Leslie (Tony Curtis) all dressed in gleaming white and his sidekick Hezekiah (Keenan Wynn) going head to head with snidely Professor Fate (Jack Lemmon chewing on every piece of scenery in sight) all in black and his faithful assistant Max (Peter Falk) in a continent spanning motor race from New York to Paris at the beginning of the 20th century. Complicating matters is fellow racer, journalist and suffragette Maggie DuBois (Natalie Wood-never lovelier) who butts heads with Leslie as they head over land and sea to their goal. Shootouts, duels, pie fights and all manner of complications ensue!

Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines (1965)-In 1910 a wealthy British newspaper publisher Lord Rawnsley (Robert Morley) offers 10,000 pounds (about a million today) to the winner of an air race between London and Paris, a great distance at the time. The contest draws an eclectic and eccentric gaggle of fliers and amateurs including Rawnsley’s rebellious daughter Patricia (Sarah Miles) who compete in all forms of airborne crates including hot air balloons!

Those Daring Young Men in Their Jaunty Jalopies (1969)-The 1,500 mile Monte Carlo rally passing through England, Paris, Monaco, Monte Carlo, Monte Gelato Falls, the Treja River, Italy, Ã…re, Jämtlands and län, Sweden in the 20’s is the setting for this wacky sequel to Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines with some of the characters returning plus Tony Curtis from The Great Race as a brash American.

    1. The title of your 3rd pick just makes me chuckle. Amazing lol.

I haven't seen any of your picks this week. I'm glad studios finally realized people want to oogle dudes too lol. That's all I remember about The Rundown.

  3. The Rundown is an alright film though SWS is actually a better actor than people give him credit for and I heard he's not like Stifler at all but a really cool dude.

Inception, why didn't I think of that? I would love to have a sequel for the film. Inception 2: ELECTRIC BOOGALOO!!!!

    1. He is, I agree. Stifler was so iconic that he was majorly typecast.

      ELECTRIC BOOGALOO!!!

  4. Any list with Inception at the top is a good list! And I had forgotten about The Rundown. I haven't seen it in ages.

    1. Indeed! I love Inception, I still wish it would've won Best Picture that year.

  5. I do love Inception and find it a thrill but it still boggles my mind. I am a lover of Bond films. Sean Connery is the best with the others like split personalities of the true Bond. Moore plays the fun one without any worries. Dalton plays the romantic sad one, Brosnan was just so handsome but with an edge and Craig is the angry Bond. I have not seen the whole movie with The Rock and Scott but it looks like a fun movie. Geez....how much oil did they lather Scott up in? He is like a slip and slide, by the way, whatever happened to him?

    1. I think he got stuck in type casting hell, which is unfortunately.

  6. I didn't include James Bond in my list for the very same reason, not really a fan. I haven't watched any of the latest one with enough focus to remember anything about them. And I think I've only "watched" two.

    1. I never saw Spectre either. I'm perfectly content with just seeing Skyfall lol

  7. Not a fan of Inception so I don't remember the locales.
Haven't seen any of the Bond films, they don't attract me at all.
Haven't seen the Rundown either. But do teen girls watch The Rundown?
