Thursday Movie Picks - Diary/Journals
This week's theme from Wandering Through The Shelves is movies that feature diaries/journals. There's definitely some iconic films that fit with this theme. I'm going with the first three that popped into my head. EDIT: I realize that there was a mistake on Wanderer's blog and the theme was supposed to be Psychics and Mediums. I posted this 8 hours ago already so if I had noticed it, my picks for that theme would've been Doctor Sleep, Nightmare Alley and The Conjuring. But here's my Diary picks anyways:
1) Harriet The Spy - Harriet's journal is what causes the main conflict in this film. I loved it as a kid. I wonder if it contributed to me loving to write as a kid.
2) Diary of a Teenage Girl - I didn't care for this one. I thought the relationship between the titular teenager girl and her mom's boyfriend was gross. Bel Powley however is a treasure, so I'm glad this movie at least gave us her.
3) Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - Poor Ginny Weasley getting manipulated by Tom Riddle's Diary. Poor the rest of us for seeing Ron Weasley get further butchered in the movie versions.
I know I've seen pieces of Harriet the Spy when my nieces were younger but I never watched the entire film. Same for your second pick.
ReplyDeleteI liked Chamber of Secrets though I've only seen it once. I'm not a huge Potter fan, I listened to the books and enjoyed them but was never fervent about them and I thought the films got better as they went along but never revisit them.
I thought this was last weeks theme that somehow got missed, anyway my first thoughts were The Diary of Anne Frank (a fine film impeded by a weak lead), the brilliantly realized French film-Diary of a Country Priest and one that you'd have to tie to a chair to watch again-Diary of a Mad Housewife (which is filled with incredibly hateful people except the lead character who is a pathetic doormat)
I checked the list and I think this week is supposed to be about mediums and psychics which led me to think of the wonderful but little known Edward G. Robinson/Gail Russell film-Night Has a Thousand Eyes, the unsettling Séance on a Wet Afternoon (which has great performances by Kim Stanley and Richard Attenborough) and the1973 creeper The Legend of Hell House.
I thought about Anne Frank, but I feel like the best versions of that story have been miniseries instead of movies. I love the HP books but I feel weird about it now since the author is such a trash person.
DeleteI love Harriet the Spy as a kid too, haven't seen it since then. It is such a cute and fun movie.
ReplyDeleteIt was! Loved it.
DeleteBy the way there was a mix up in the TMP schedule, so please read my latest post for the fix.
ReplyDeleteI saw your edit! Thanks for clearing that up.
DeleteI got confused by the date of the subject which is why I went with psychic/mediums. I've seen all 3 of these films and definitely enjoy them as it is likely I'll use one of these films for my picks.
ReplyDeleteI didn't even notice the date lol. I'm glad I'm not the only one that missed that.
DeleteI did the psychic and mediums post, but check out the host's post as she is accepting both topics this and next week.
ReplyDeleteI saw her update. I guess I'm on mediums next week!
DeleteI will do the diary one next week:) I have not seen your first 2 but the 2nd one reminded me of all these "Diary of a Teenage stripper, Runaway, Model, etc... that came out in the 70s. I enjoy the Potter films and this is a great one to showcase. I am bad because I still have to read the last 2 novels.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe no one caught that mix up until the day of lol. I just copy paste the list in a draft and delete when I'm done. Didn't notice that at all.
