Thursday Movie Picks - TV Edition: Royalty

This week's TV theme from Wandering Through The Shelves is royalty! There's plenty to choose from this week so here are three I enjoy

1) The Crown -
The telling of Queen Elizabeth's story throughout the years. I think this show is really well done. Season 3 was a bust, but the other ones have been great and I can't wait to see what season 5 has to offer.

2) The Great -
I did not expect this fictionalized version of Catherine The Great to be so funny, but it is. It's absurd.

3) Game of Thrones -
You know I had to bring my frenemy Game of Thrones into the mix. What was once my favorite TV show of all time that ruined their goodwill with a horrible final 2 seasons. I wish I knew how to quit you, GoT.

  1. I have not seen any of these....yes I am one who has not seen Game of Thrones. I love the story of Catherine the Great Which is just nuts but so true. A German princess who marries a total schmuck but the tzar of Russia. She has to contend with his overbearing mom but finds solace in many, many men. She offs her schizoid hubby to become one of the greatest rulers ever. I love it. I have to watch the Crown...when I can see it.

    1. The Great definitely takes some liberties, but it's such a funny show. I didn't expect it to be so humorous.

  2. I have heard plenty about both of your first two choices but have yet to catch up with them. I'll probably wait now until they wrap up and then track them down to see them from start to finish.

My niece was sure that I'd LOVE Game of Thrones when she recommended it to me and I really tried but was never able to connect with it. I gave up for a few seasons then the divine Diana Rigg signed on so I gave it another pass but it was still a no for me and if Dame Rigg (who I will watch in anything) couldn't get me on board the program just isn't for me.

I'm usually a fan of these kind of shows as long as they keep somewhat close to the actual history (one of the reasons I hated The Other Boleyn Girl was that it was almost totally divorced from the actual events. Why? The real deal was complex and more scandalous than any poppycock some writer could invent!) I've been a devotee of the ones on the BBC via PBS since I was a kid.

Actually the first two that occurred to me were the pair that really set the framework in the 70's for these type of shows-The Six Wives of Henry the VIII, each episode of which focus on one of his wives and Elizabeth R which followed a year later wherein Glenda Jackson tore it up playing The Virgin Queen from 19 up until her death. Both suffer now from what seems to modern eyes rough production values but the acting in both is extraordinary.

The third that came to me-The Borgias from the 2010's isn't nearly as good but I enjoyed it in an overblown salacious kind of way.

    1. I've never heard of The Borgias, I'll have to look that up. I completely understand when people don't get into Game of Thrones. It's a LOT. lol

  3. I still haven't seen any of these shows though my mother did like The Crown but only saw the first season as she's been too busy watching other things. I really want to watch The Great but I hope to do so after my and mom were really upset over this month's cable bill. That's right, we're now on the final days of cable TV.

    1. I get it. I recently cut cable too, it's getting way to expensive. I wish they would let you choose channels a la carte, then I'd stick with them.

    2. (That's me by the way, Blogger won't let me sign in)

  4. The Great is the only one I haven't seen yet.
The Crown I think I like the first two seasons with Claire Foy the most; the script was so sharp.

    1. Claire Foy was fantastic. No on else comes close to her.

  5. Great picks! Have you ever watched the show "The Royals"? I think it initially aired on E! and seemed trashy, but I LOVED it. I thought it got better and better and I was so bummed when it didn't get a fifth season.

    1. I never watched it, but I remember seeing previews for it when I would watch E Red Carpets. It looked fun, and I was interested in seeing what the Narnia guy was up to.

  6. I will forever be mad about how GOT ended - I just can't get over it
