DVD Review: World War Z

Super Zombies.
Gerry (Brad Pitt) is a former United Nations employee that had every intention of spending more time with his family. Then, a virus breaks out that is seemingly turning people into zombies. He's rescued and brought out to a Navy ship where he's informed that he needs to lead a team to South Korea, where they think this originated, and bring along a doctor to see if they can find some sort of vaccine.

WWZ had a lot of production problems. They totally re-wrote the ending, they tamed the violence quite a bit to get that PG-13 rating. I had low expectations after reading all of that, but I'm surprised to say WWZ was actually pretty good. I'm a huge Walking Dead fan (although reluctantly right now, because fuck the first half of season 4) and I appreciated how different everything was between the two. WWZ's zombies are fast, and have a weakness. The film didn't feel sloppy, despite having a completely re-worked third act, but I do wonder what the hell they are going to do in their supposed sequel.

This was a good role for Brad Pitt, and I really enjoyed Daniella Kertesz as Segen, who becomes Pitt's right hand woman so to speak in the field. Plus, there's a part early on with an important character that totally blew my mind, no pun intended.

Recommended: Yes

Grade: B-

Memorable Quote: "I've seen these things literally bypass people." - Gerry (Brad Pitt)

  1. I had this on my desk for like 6 months now and I still haven't seen it. But hopefully the time will come for both this and Warm Bodies :)

  2. Glad you liked it, Brittani. I actually saw this one theatrically and liked it enough. Brad Pitt, though this role sort of seems beneath him (at this point?), was pretty awesome.

I don't want to be that guy, but f--k it. The movie is solid, but the book was 900 times better. Oh well.

That mind blowing bit? What the Hell was that? I mean, accidents happen....but, really?

    1. I did not see that coming. I sort of jumped, that's shitty luck. I really do need to read the book now.

  3. Good review Brittani. It's a waste of some perfectly awesome source-material, but I guess with what they got here, it was fine enough to watch.

  4. I also enjoyed the movie for what it was. Although after reading the book I am absolutely shocked they got away with using the title. The book has absolutely no similarities to the movie. The book was fantastic. WWZ was on my ok list for last year. I'm a Walking Dead fan as well.

    1. Really? Nothing in common with it? Now I really need to check it out.
