Indie Gems: The Story of Luke

Reality check.

Everyone in this film receives one of those before the credits roll.

Luke (Lou Taylor Pucci) is a 25 year old man with autism that was living with his grandparents until she passes away and he's put in home. He's sent to live with his uncle Paul, (Cary Elwes) his intensely bitchy wife Cindy (Kristen Bauer van Straten) and their teenage children. Not liking his living arrangement, Luke is determined to get a job and live independently.

I'm not sure why Lou Taylor Pucci isn't more popular, this guy can really do no wrong. This guy does TONS of independent films and he's never even gotten a Spirit Award nomination? The fuck is that?

Rant aside, this film was incredibly sweet and felt authentic. Films about autism can be touchy, but I thought this one was handled well. Seth Green also has a part in this film as Luke's coworker, he comes off as extremely over the top at first, but he tones it down and his character eventually serves a good purpose.

Grade: A

Memorable Quote: "Stay true to what you want, always." - Sam (Dewshane Williams)

  1. I have a particular interest in films about autism, since one of my kids is on the mild end of "the spectrum." I find most portrayals of autism in books and films to be cliched, but this does sound good. I'll check it out.

    1. I think you'd like this. It didn't feel very cliched to me at all. It's on Netflix instant.

  2. It amazes me into why Lou Taylor Pucci isn't any bigger. The dude should be in more films.

    1. Same here. He consistently gives great performances and nearly always elevates whatever film he's in. He's like Zooey Deschanel was a few years ago, he needs a big mainstream break.

  3. I don't remember any of this happening in my life. Nor do I remember working with Seth Green, Though I do want to live independently.
