2015 Emmy Nominees. Who will win, who should win

This is the part where I attempt to guess what Emmy voters are going to do, which is almost pointless because these bastards can get really unpredictable with their winners. (But never their nominees, we always see those coming) I managed a pretty amazing feat this year: I did not see a single mini series/TV movie nominee. That's never happened to me before. So full disclosure, all of those are guesses based on what other people are saying, and my own actor bias.

Here's who I think will win, and in some cases, who should win instead.

Outstanding Comedy Series
Louie
Modern Family
Parks and Recreation
Silicon Valley
Transparent
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Veep
Who will win: Parks and Rec. It's their final season, so they might actually get some love. Or they could play it safe and Transparent will win again.
Who should win: Veep or Louie. Mostly Veep, it's the funniest show on TV now.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series
Lily Tomlin - Grace and Frankie
Amy Schumer - Inside Amy Schumer
Edie Falco - Nurse Jackie
Amy Poehler - Parks and Recreation
Lisa Kudrow - The Comeback
Julia Louis-Dreyfus - Veep
Who will win: I think Julia Louis-Dreyfus will take it home again, but critics love The Comeback, so Kudrow could be rewarded too.
Who should win: Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
Anthony Anderson - Black-ish
Matt LeBlanc - Episodes
Don Cheadle - House of Lies
Louis C.K. - Louie
William H. Macy - Shameless
Will Forte - The Last Man on Earth
Jeffrey Tambor - Transparent
Who will win: Jeffrey Tambor
Who should win: Forte was hilarious in Last Man on Earth. And I love Louis CK. I really wish I could see Transparent, because I hear Tambor is great. Nearly everyone in this category would be a worthy winner. Except LeBlanc, I'm not sure what he's still doing here.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
Niecy Nash - Getting On
Julie Bowen - Modern Family
Allison Janney - Mom
Kate McKinnon - Saturday Night Live
Mayim Bialik - The Big Bang Theory
Gaby Hoffman - Transparent
Jane Krakowski - Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Anna Chlumsky - Veep
Who will win: This is tough, but I think Krakowski will take it home.
Who should win: Always Anna, she's amazing.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy
Andre Braugher - Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Adam Driver - Girls
Keegan-Michael Key - Key & Peele
Ty Burrel - Modern Family
Titus Burgess- Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Tony Hale - Veep
Who will win: I think Tony Hale will take home another.
Who should win: Hale, but I love seeing Key in here too.

Outstanding Drama Series
Better Call Saul
Downton Abbey
Game of Thrones
Homeland
House of Cards
Mad Men
Orange Is the New Black
Who will win: Game of Thrones. This was (IMO) their worst season, which means they'll probably win their first Emmy for drama series. Mad Men might get a grand send off though, but I have a weird feeling about this one.
Who should win: I love GoT despite the shit they turn out sometimes, so I always root for them. But OITNB (this is season 2 that's competing) was great and Better Call Saul got off to an excellent start.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Claire Danes - Homeland
Viola Davis - How to Get Away with Murder
Taraji P. Henson - Empire
Tatiana Maslany -Orphan Black
Elisabeth Moss - Mad Men
Robin Wright - House of Cards
Who will win: Elisabeth Moss. I expect Mad Men to win quite a few trophies for their final season. Henson has a good shot as well.
Who should win: I don't watch any of these shows, but judging by the internet, Maslany should have an Emmy.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series
Kyle Chandler - Bloodline
Jeff Daniels - The Newsroom
Jon Hamm - Mad Men
Bob Odenkirk - Better Call Saul
Liev Schrieber - Ray Donovon
Kevin Spacey - House of Cards
Who will win: Jon Hamm will finally, FINALLY take home an Emmy now that he doesn't have Bryan Cranston wiping the floor with him.
Who should win; I love me some Odenkirk.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Joanne Froggatt - Downton Abbey
Lena Headey - Game of Thrones
Emilia Clarke - Game of Thrones
Christina Hendricks - Mad Men
Uzo Aduba - Orange Is the New Black
Christine Baranski - The Good Wife
Who will win: It's a close race between Hendricks and Aduba, it will almost certainly be one of them.
Who should win: Headey because she's great. I'm still annoyed Clarke is here.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Jonathan Banks - Better Call Saul
Ben Mendelsohn - Bloodline
Jim Carter - Downton Abbey
Peter Dinklage - Game of Thrones
Michael Kelly - House of Cards
Alan Cumming - The Good Wife
Who will win: This is tough, but I think Banks might take it.
Who should win: Banks or Dinklage.

Outstanding Mini Series
American Crime
American Horror Story: Freak Show
The Honorable Woman
Olive Kitteridge
Wolf Hall
Who will win: American Horror Story usually does. I haven't seen any of these.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Mini Series or Movie
Felicity Huffman - American Crime
Jessica Lange - American Horror Story: Freak Show
Queen Latifah, Bessie
Frances McDormand - Olive Kitteridge
Emma Thompson - Mrs. Lovett
Maggie Gyllenhaal - The Honorable Woman
Who will win: Maggie Gyllenhaal is getting rave reviews for this, so probably her. Or Lange will be rewarded again for AHS.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Mini Series or a Movie
Timothy Hutton - American Crime
Ricky Gervais - Derek Special
Adrien Brody - Houdini
David Oyelowo - Nightingale
Richard Jenkins - Olive Kitteridge
Mark Rylance - Wolf Hall
Who will win: Richard Jenkins

Outstanding TV Movie
Agatha Christie’s Poirot — Curtain: Poirot’s Last Case
Bessie
Grace of Monaco
Hello Ladies: The Movie
Killing Jesus
Nightingale
Who will win: Bessie has the most buzz out of any of these.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a  Mini Series or Movie
Regina King - American Crime
Sarah Paulson - American Horror Story: Freak Show
Angela Bassett - American Horror Story: Freak Show
Kathy Bates - American Horror Story: Freak Show
Mo’Nique - Bessie
Zoe Kazan - Olive Kitteridge
Who will win:I'm assuming Bates takes this for AHS
Who should win: I'm bias, I love Zoe Kazan.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Mini Series or Movie
Richard Cabral  American Crime
Denis O’Hare  American Horror Story: Freak Show
Finn Wittrock  American Horror Story: Freak Show
Michael Kenneth Williams - Bessie
Bill Murray - Olive Kitteridge
Damian Lewis - Wolf Hall
Who will and should win: Michael Kenneth Williams. You come at the king, you best not miss.

  1. I don't watch hardly any TV so I probably shouldn't chime in but I will anyway, he..he.. Nice to see some diversity in the acting categories, esp the lead female drama... Viola Davis & Taraji P. Henson are such great actresses. I have seen The Honorable Woman and Maggie G. is astounding so I hope she wins!

    1. Always chime in! I don't watch every single one of these shows either, doesn't stop me from throwing my 2 cents in, little as they mean. lol I agree, the diversity is nice.

  2. I used to follow the Emmys but stopped few years back. Nick Offerman was never even nominated. That's just shameful

    1. The lack of Parks and Rec noms other than the show itself and Poehler is pretty ridiculous. I've always been annoyed about Tony Hale being the only man from Veep nominated too. All those guys turn out good work.

  3. Nice breakdown here. Would LOVE if Kudrow won for The Comeback. Best Actor Drama is tough for me. I really want Hamm to finally win, but I just got caught up with Ray Donovan and the episode Schrieber is nominated for is astounding. Literally some of the best acting I’ve ever seen, on TV or film.

    1. It makes me wonder if they'll give it to someone else just to "slight" Hamm? It's not really a slight because that guy has been nominated for every single season of Mad Men, but sometimes I wonder.

    2. I need to rewatch the episode he's nominated for. I forget which one it is.

    3. I thought it was for the penultimate episode? I'd have to dig through that PDF again.

  4. Oh man, nothing like the Emmys to make me feel completely out of touch with the world.

  5. LOVE how you mention this was GoT's worst season, thus it's probably the one that will finally win it the Emmy. It's funny 'cause it's true. I hope Heady wins, she was just outstanding this season. The actors for Mad Men have never won, so unless there's a LOTR-like "waiting for the last one to honor EVERYTHING!" I don't think this year will change that, except for maybe Jon Hamm, and Elisabeth Moss if Viola Davis and Taraji P. Henson (easily my pick FTW) cancel each other out.

I am SO with you on the love of Veep, and I think it stands a good chance to win unless they go with Transparent (have they given ANY wins to Parks & Rec in the past?) - it has the most nominations and they clearly love the show given its multiple past wins. JLD and Anna Chlumsky FTW.

Transparent is REALLY good, but I'm pissed that it's in the Comedy category. Yes, it's a "dramedy", but it definitely leans MUCH harder on the Drama side of things. It's not very funny at all. Jeffrey Tambor is GREAT, though.

Also, all the Emmys for Tituss Burgess. ALL. THE. EMMYS.

    1. The Emmys are so weird with Parks and Rec. It should have way more nominations then it does. I actually think a show like 30 Rock hurt it for awhile nomination wise, because they had similar feels and the Emmys went ape shit for 30 Rock.

Ah, Transparent has the OITNB treatment then? I couldn't believe it when they were in the comedy category last year. That was so wrong. I wish I could see it, it might win again just because it's an important discussion.

Henson has a really good chance, but I don't know, I feel like Emmys might throw some trophies at Mad Men because they've "paid their dues" or some shit.

I'm glad someone else agrees about GoT lol. When Breaking Bad finally won, it wasn't for its strongest season either.

    2. I always thought OITNB could truly have gone either way its first season. With the new rules about all half-hour shows being automatically comedies and hour-longs being automatically dramas they had to petition to be considered in another category. Go figure the only ones that did were hour-longs trying to be comedies (including OITNB) - and three were granted: Glee, Jane the Virgin (both deserved), and Shameless (WTF). But no half-hour shows tried to be a Drama, even though Transparent and Looking are really NOT comedies. It could just be me, but I really don't find Transparent very funny. Not that it's not good, it's just not a Comedy in my eyes.

    3. The Emmys have the strangest rules of any award show out there. Their flip flopping in categories annoys me. Downton Abbey going from mini to drama, True Detective going from drama to mini. AHS being in mini. Not to mention the voting where until last year only certain members voted for specific categories.

I don't watch Shameless, but I saw the UK version, and if the American version is anything like it, it probably shouldn't be in the comedy category.

    4. At least the rule changes this year mitigated some of that - changing Miniseries to "Limited Series" so that the inclusion of AHS now makes sense and True Detective going where it belongs, limiting the number of episodes a Guest Actor can appear in, etc. But even still, it's clear that the Emmy voters don't actually watch TV LOL. I'm still not over the complete lack of love for Jane the Virgin and Hannibal (and The Americans, although at least that one broke in below the line). Shameless is weird because it started out as a comedy with dramatic episodes, but somewhere in the third or fourth season it became the opposite: a drama with comedic moments. But of course, that switch coincided with the move to the Comedy category, which makes no sense at all. If there were any justice in the world, Emmy Rossum would have two nominations for Best Actress in a Drama. She's been just incredible the past few seasons.

    5. I do like the changes they made to the Guest categories, because as much as I love OINTB, it was ridiculous the amount of guest noms they got for their first season. All of those women should've been in supporting. I had hoped that changing the voting structure would allow some different nominees. It seemed to work for Maslany, but an actress like Melissa McBride, despite being on a mostly poorly written show like The Walking Dead has been absolutely killing it every season (especially these last two) but hasn't been given any love.

  6. I can't imagine Game of Thrones winning. It's still a fantasy show, too much for Emmy voters. If it happens, I hope it'll open a door for more recognition for genre shows. Like, because it's SF, they are totally ignored. So that could be a good thing. They can still give it to Lena Headey, it will have no impact. (Why someone thought Emilia Clarke deserved a nomination is so beyond me).

I hope Taraji P. Henson wins, she was amazing. And while I'm not so fond of the last Mad Men episodes, the show deserves some love. Jon Hamm deserves some love.

    1. I think the Emmys have been more open to fantasy shows for a few years now. GoT and AHS always get nominations. I think GoT is bound to win at least one best drama Emmy throughout its run.

Emilia gets nominated by people with Khaleesi-syndrome. "OMG Look at Khaleesi, she's so badass!!!!"

Yeah, I feel bad for Jon Hamm at this point. He could probably use that Emmy.

  7. Good picks! I think you might get your wish with Veep, this year. I think it's between Veep and Transparent. Unfortunately, I don't think Hamm is as much of a lock as you do. Spacey has a great shot, as well!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm never 100% on Hamm as a lock considering his track record with never winning. lol

  8. So many shows I haven't seen! LOL
