Thursday Movie Picks: Journalists/Reporters

This week's theme from Wandering Through The Shelves is about journalists/reports for either print of TV. There's lots to choose from this week, and the ones I picked might seem a bit weird,(side note: I need to finish watching Shattered Glass) so let's get to it.

The Ring

The reporting part of The Ring probably isn't what most people think of when they see this title. (That would be reserved for the girl crawling out of the TV) but going on Rachel's journey to find the truth about the video tape is an interesting and creepy ride.

Zodiac

Everything about these newspaper reporters covering the Zodiac killer is perfect. This film is brilliantly shot and acted.

Nightcrawler

Accident journalism is a thing! Between Lou trying to document the goriest things he can find and Nina trying to turn them into ratings gold for her news station, they're a match made in shady journalism hell.

  1. I picked Zodiac too! I really do think i8t's one of the better American movies so far this century. And I never would have thought of Nightcrawler. Good call. I was too focused on journalists as unsung heroes I think. I forgot that they could be dastardly.

    1. lol yeah, Lou is definitely the worst journalist on this list. Even though I wish we could've spent more time with him.

  2. The Ring is a good choice, never crossed my mind even though I watched it quite recently. I like to think how busy the Ring girl will be if she uploaded her video online!

    1. LOL. She'd have to outsource some other creepy little girls to keep up.

  3. Yay for Nightcrawler! That made my list, too :) I wasn't even aware of Zodiac until this week, I really need to give that a watch.

  4. Wonderfully creative choice with The Ring. Good movie. I love Nightcrawler, another great pick. Not as high as everyone else on Zodiac due to that insanely boring third act.

    1. I definitely understand that cric of Zodiac. It does have parts where it drags.

  5. Brilliant picks! I still need to see Nightcrawler. Really looking forward to it.

  7. Zodiac is a great movie to watch and the Ring is also great but I still have nightmares over that one-it totally freaked me out. I am someone who had nightmares over the original Godzilla!. I have yet to see Nightcrawler but heard nothing but raves about this film

    1. Nightcrawler is amazing. The Ring is one of the few PG-13 horror movies that actually scared me. That TV scene freaked me out.

  8. I found Zodiac unsettling but since that was clearly the intent I say a job well done. It was expertly shot and directed and the acting was uniformly excellent. It's not something I ever revisit but I'm glad I saw it.

I LOATHED Nightcrawler but that didn't keep me from thinking that both Jake and Rene Russo were incredibly good.

I still have yet to see The Ring.

    1. Oh no! I remember you saying you didn't like Nightcrawler.

The Ring is probably the best PG-13 horror movie out there to be honest.

  9. You went dark...and I love it! Love the mention of The Ring. Out of the box, for sure, but totally worthy of mention. I think that's such an underrated flick, to be honest. Watts WORKS it, and it is genuinely chilling.

    1. It is. That's the first film I really noticed Watts in, and I liked her immediately.

  10. I really need to see Nightcrawler and Zodiac still. I see you were for dark picks, while mine were on the comedic side of things.

I never would have thought of the Ring, thats a good one.

    1. I didn't consciously pick dark movies, but I usually gravitate towards that anyways so it's not a huge surprise. I hope you check out Nightcrawler and Zodiac. They're wonderful.

  11. Yeah. I had no recollection of The Ring having anything to do with a journalist. Not of fan of that kind of movie, so it has proven totally forgettable to me, except for a couple of the creepier scenes.

Zodiac is so good I think I need to stop putting it on lists. This week is at least the 10th time I've wanted to use it. Just don't want to repeat picks.

And Nightcrawler! Gonna watch it tonight. Just bought the Blu-ray. Haven't seen it since the theater. Great picks!!!

  12. I actually really like Naomi Watts's part in The Ring. It's what I remember about it... probably just because the rest is so expected though. Zodiac is great and omg Nightcrawler!!!

    1. I love Naomi Watts. She can do no wrong. (Well, apparently she did with Diana, but I never saw it so I can pretend it didn't happen) lol

  13. The Ring is a very inspired voice! Glad you're a fan of Watts too, she was a lot of fun in While We're Young.
