Against The Crowd Blogathon 2016

I'm a little early with this post, but I'll be going on vacation this week and likely will not have internet access for most of it. So before I wake up at a ridiculous hour to head to the airport, he's my contribution to one of my favorite blogging events.

Wendell over at Dell on Movies is back with his yearly Against The Crowd blogathon. This year he's teaming up with KG over at KG Movie rants as well. He asks us to choose one movie we love that the majority does not, and one we dislike, that the majority loves. Here are the official rules.

1. Pick one movie that "everyone" loves (the more iconic, the better). That movie must have a score of at least 75% on rottentomatoes.com. Tell us why you hate it.

2. Pick one movie that "everyone" hates (the more notorious, the better). That movie must have a score of less than 35% on rottentomatoes.com. Tell us why you love it.

3. Include the tomato meter scores of both movies.

4. Use one of the banners in this post, or feel free to create your own.

5. Comment on this post, or on KG's Movie Rants with the two movies you intend on writing on.

6. Publish your post on any day from Monday August 22 through Friday August 26, 2016.

Here are my entries from 2014 and 2015

Inside Out

Now, I should start off by saying I don't hate this movie. It had some good parts, but I definitely don't like it. I talked about my experience seeing this in theaters. My then three year old kept telling me how sad it was and proceeded to crawl into my lap and stay there during the entire film. I was so worried he was going to cry. Fast forward a year, it's on DVD and he asks to watch it again. I watch with him, hoping that maybe it'll change my mind....nope.

This movie's plot, while straightforward is actually quite poorly executed and the middle of the film is just a jumbled mess. In fact, I think it borderlines on pretentious a bit. It's a children's film with an important lesson, yet it's almost like it forgets it's supposed to be appealing to said children. It's something Zootopia mastered gracefully. But Inside Out seems to be speaking to the parents, and if that's the case, why are you wasting the originality of your story on forced actions? Why is Bing Bong supposed to be such a big deal when he's easily one of the most annoying parts of the entire movie? Aside from the gum commercial theme song, and Riley asking for help at the end, nothing else in this movie is memorable.

 The Chumscrubber

I was staring at my DVD rack looking for the film I love that everyone dislikes. When I typed this title into Rotten Tomatoes, I was shocked that it had a rotten rating to begin with. I suppose "bored teens in suburbia" has quite a few films to its name, but this one is so unique and has such a wonderful cast. When a teenage drug dealer commits suicide, his friend Dean is the only one who knows where his stash is and refuses to tell anyone. So a few of his fellow classmates/neighbors kidnap his brother for ransom, only they grab the wrong kid.

Maybe critics don't like the fake cartoon they threw in? Or the ridiculous name? Or the fact that all these families are super weird? I loved that. It's one of my favorite films centered on teenagers and it has an amazing cast. Jamie Bell, Justin Chatwin, Lou Taylor Pucci, Camilla Belle, Ray Fiennes, Glenn Close, Jason Isaacs, Allison Janney, Carrie-Anne Moss. What's not to like about that? 2005 was a good year for independent films.

  1. This is a cool blogathon and I'm very interested in the film that you like and most people don't. I should give I side Out a try but it never appealed to me. I hate In The Bedroom...sorry but I called In Boredom. I did not find it at all riveting and thought seeing the wife smoke and him cut a hedge or mow the lawn just beyond mind numbingly boring. I went with 4 other people...one started counting the ceiling tiles in the theatre because the movie bored him. The other fell asleep and the last 2 were rolling their eyes and squirming I their seats...hahahaaa. The film I love that even won razzies is the film I just talked about, 3000 Miles to Graceland. I found it entertaining, exciting and pretty well acted despite what most others thought.

  2. I actually adored Inside Out, but to your point, I liked it far more than my daughter. I figured it was because she is a teenager and thinks she's too cool for kiddie flicks. Maybe not. Haven't seen Chumscrubber, but that does sound interesting. Got me curious.

    Thanks for joining again!

  3. Wow, I think we're going to have a disagreement here as I didn't like The Chumscrubber at all. I was very annoyed by Justin Chatwin in the film while I also didn't like any scene with Rita Wilson. It's a mess of a film that I don't really want to revisit.

  4. I loved Inside Out, and so did the kids sitting all around me in the theater, but I agree that it was quite sad. And yes, maybe it was speaking mostly to parents than kids. I haven't seen The Chumscrubber, but it sounds interesting to me. I guess I'll have to check that one out.

    1. I feel like kids movies should speak to both. I wasn't a fan of it at all.

  5. No way! How has Chumscrubber got such a cool cast and yet I've never heard of it?! That's going on the watch list.
I loved Inside Out, but I agree that it doesn't feel like a kid's movie!

  6. I'm not an animation guy so all I've seen of Inside Out is what I've glimpsed when I've picked up my nieces or nephew and it was on. The parts I've seen have never drawn me in so I can't really comment on that.

Chumscrubber is a title I've heard but I've never seen but that cast makes me want to give it a try.

  7. I'm tempted to check out The Chumscrubber. It might be something I'll like.

  8. I haven't seen Inside Out but I have been hesitant in watching it. It wasn't a Pixar film that made me want to run to the cinema.

Oh Chumscrubber, I watched this for Jamie Bell and liked it but I wouldn't watch it again. You're right all the families are odd, too odd. If everyone is odd, no one stands out. But I did like it and appreciate the dark side of it all.

    1. Inside Out definitely doesn't need a rush to see it. Or a viewing at all lol.

  9. Yes, Amen, Preach, Praise your review of Inside Out. I COMPLETELY agree. Everyone was praising it as if it was the next Up, and it just didn't mesh well with my feelings. Overrated for sure!

  10. Ah. I love Inside Out. I really enjoyed, but I can see where you're coming from. Though I do feel the film was better when all the emotions where together, once they split apart it was less enjoyable.

  12. Aww, I loved Inside Out but you raise a very good point about it speaking to adults instead of kids. That scene where Bing Bong dies actually hit me pretty hard because - while I didn't have a particular imaginary friend - I did daydream and act out a lot of adventures; and seeing Bing Bong die reminded me how I just let that side of me die to a certain extent. I think a little kid won't quite get the gravity of that moment.
I haven't seen Chumscrubber but the plot sounds intriguing. I'll put it on the list.

Thanks for participating in the blogathon. Hope to see you next year too.

    1. That's a really heavy thought for that scene! I'm cold hearted and felt nothing. I wish I would've had a better reaction.

      Thank you for cohosting!

  13. Thank god someone finally called Inside Out for the overrated film that it is. I don't hate it either, but I just couldn't fathom the love it got last year. I mean it's okay but simply not the groundbreaking masterpiece everyone says it to be.
