Thursday Movie Picks: Movies Based on TV Series

This week's theme from Wandering Through the Shelves are films that were based on their smaller screen counter parts. This was really hard to narrow down. A lot of children's shows came to mind, like Rugrats or Doug. Shows that were a bit before my time like 21 Jump Street and Dukes of Hazzard came to mind too. I decided to stick with movies based on shows that I watched quite a bit.

1) X-Files: The Movie (Or Fight the Future depending on when you bought your DVD)

My dad and I watched a lot of TV together (we also watched Highlander, which I used a few months ago) X-Files was one of our favorites. I was shipping Molder and Scully before I even knew when shipping was. I remember being so pissed that they didn't kiss when we saw this in theaters.

2) Jackass: The Movie (and sequels)

So the show and the movies it spawned are all gross and outrageous but I loved how much people hated it. This bothered so many simply because it existed. The reaction it all provoked was hilarious. I was happy to see a less censored movie versions, even if it meant seeing Steve-o stick things up his ass on the big screen.

3) South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut
I started watching this show in it's first season, when I was all of 11 or 12. My dad justified letting me watch it because I learned a decent lesson at the end of each episode, and never repeated the swear words. (in front of him) I'll also never forget his face when he took me to see this in theaters and the Uncle Fucker song came on. He literally groaned and shrunk in his seat. He says that's still one of his most embarrassing parental moments.

  1. I wanted to pick both 21 Jump Street and Hazard (even though I never saw the series), but when on a different road. I haven't seen any of your picks, neither the series nor the film. Crazy, I know.

    1. And they're such long running shows too! (Well, maybe Jackass, but definitely the other two)

  2. I've seen episodes of all three of these but wasn't a regular viewer of any of them. I hate South Park and could only take a few minutes of Jackass.

I haven't seen any of the films except Jackass and that only because it was playing at a party I was at and I was stuck. And yes the Steve-O thing I can't unsee.

There really were so many choices this week I just went with three whose movie versions I liked as well as the show.

Serenity (2005)-Continuing the story of Captain Mal Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and his crew who are roaming the galaxy in their beat up spaceship Serenity from the short lived show Firefly. With a brother and sister who are being pursued by a hired killer, the ruthless Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor) the group planet hop from place to place in their somewhat unreliable rust bucket. By turns light-hearted and tense.

The Fugitive (1993)-Dr. Richard Kimble (Harrison Ford) is attacked in a home invasion and his wife murdered by a one armed man. Falsely accused of the crime he escapes after a spectacular train wreck and sets out to find the person responsible all the while pursued by the dogged efforts of Deputy Sam Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones). Fasted paced and entertaining, TLJ won a best supporting Oscar for his work. Updated and slightly rethought version of the classic David Janssen series with some terrific action set pieces.

Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988)-There’s a plot to turn innocent people into assassins and through them kill prominent people including Queen Elizabeth II but the police are on it. The problem however is that the case has been assigned to Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) an utterly clueless detective who specialty is bumbling. Silly comedy turned formerly stern leading man Nielsen into a comedy mainstay. Based on the comic TV series Police Squad.

  4. I gotta say I hate both Jackass and South Park. Not my kind of programmes at all. I remembered kids in my class at primary school watched them both and quotes it all the time. It was awful.

  5. I think it's wild that I watched every episode of X-Files when I was a kid in the 90s, but I can't tell you anything about it. My memory is so foggy. *Que X-Files theme*

    1. I'm the same way with a lot of it. I watched every episode too, and the last few seasons especially I don't remember well.

    2. Me too. I was probably way too young to have seen it and some of the episodes were really freaky. Like you, I don't remember much, just that I like the series. I haven't seen any of the movies though. I get the impression that they're not as good.

    3. The first movie is very good, imo. The 2nd one not too much, but I couls watch the first al day.

  6. Love The X Files and all the episodes even the gross one that is banned (I think of it as typical Southern family affair..er...never mind:)) I have only seen snippets of Jack Ass and never had a desire to watch it. I did see some episodes of South park and found it hilarious even though it's crude as hell. I have to look up this song:)

  7. My mom was a HUGE X-Files fan, and when my sister and I could stomach the scary we joined her in watching it every Sunday night. I remember when the movie came out and it was a HUGE deal. For us anyway. Such a great show, and the movie was good too, from what I remember. A perfect supersized episode of the show.

I have never watched a single second of Jackass and I never will and I am perfectly fine with that.

LOVE LOVE LOVE South Park - TV show and movie. The songs in the movie are just GENIUS.

    1. lol Jackass is not for everyone. Or anyone really unless you're morbidly curious.

The South Park writers are genius. I love those guys.

    2. And was robbed of the Oscar by an awful Phil Collins song.

    3. I actually didn't mind Phil Collins winning because I liked the Tarzan soundtrack, but I loved how South Park would have him show up on the show with the Oscar up his ass.

  9. Totally with you on these, Brittani. Solid f--king picks. Ah, Uncle F--ker. I think that moment changed my life too.

Man...Steve-O putting things in his ass? That was life-changing too, now that I think about it.

Oh, and f--k those X-Files movies.

    1. I laughed so hard I almost cried in the South Park movie when they started singing "Kyle's Mom is a Bitch" in different languages.

  10. Love the South Park movie, but I feel for your dad. I know that pain, lol. Never was a fan of the show for either X-Files nor Jackass. Really couldn't understand the appeal of the latter. In short, I never bothered with the movies based on them.

  11. Movies based on TV series seem to often fail, but I did enjoy the Southpark animated film you included. I second Joel in the comments, The Fugitive (1993) w/Harrison Ford is a really strong example. Mission Impossible is also a good one based on a tv series.

  12. Love that Scully scene! It was so frustrating when she and Mulder didn't kiss. The scene of them in the cornfield and the bees is classic. "SCULLLLAAAAAYYYY!" Cool picks.
