2017 BAFTA Nominations

What I love about the BAFTAS is they always seem to nominate a few things outside of the norm. I never predict these ones myself because I don't live in England, so I have no idea what's eligible. Below are the nominees, there's a few nice surprises.

Best film
Arrival
I, Daniel Blake
La La Land
Manchester by the Sea
Moonlight
I don't know what I, Daniel Blake is. Seeing Nocturnal Animals in a few other places makes me bummed it missed. I thought Fences wasn't eligible but apparently it is, that's another glaring miss.

Outstanding British film
American Honey
Denial
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
I, Daniel Blake
Notes on Blindness
Under the Shadow
I just got American Honey from Netflix, but I haven't gotten to watch it yet. I want to see Under The Shadow and Denial too. I've only seen Fantastic Beasts out of this bunch.

Director
Denis Villeneuve - Arrival
Ken Loach - I, Daniel Blake
Damien Chazelle - La La Land
Kenneth Lonergan - Manchester by the Sea
Tom Ford - Nocturnal Animals
Barry Jenkins missing out for Moonlight is ridiculous.

Leading Actress
Amy Adams - Arrival
Emily Blunt - The Girl on the Train
Emma Stone - La La Land
Meryl Streep - Florence Foster Jenkins
Natalie Portman - Jackie
I guess Emily Blunt for SAG wasn't a fluke? BAFTA loved her too. She still has no change for Oscar though.

Leading Actor
Andrew Garfield - Hacksaw Ridge
Casey Affleck - Manchester by the Sea
Jake Gyllenhaal - Nocturnal Animals
Ryan Gosling - La La Land
Viggo Mortensen - Captain Fantastic
I LOVE that Jake Gyllenhaal is finally getting some love for Nocturnal Animals. he deserves it.

Supporting Actress
Hayley Squires - I, Daniel Blake
Michelle Williams - Manchester by the Sea
Naomie Harris - Moonlight
Nicole Kidman - Lion
Viola Davis - Fences
I guess they couldn't decide on who to nominate from Hidden Figures? Either way, all except Hayley Squires will repeat for Oscar, I think.

Supporting Actor
Aaron Taylor-Johnson - Nocturnal Animals
Dev Patel - Lion
Hugh Grant - Florence Foster Jenkins
Jeff Bridges - Hell or High Water
Mahershala Ali - Moonlight
Another nod for Aaron Taylor-Johnson, maybe his Oscar campaign does have some legs? I was hoping BAFTA would go rogue and nominate Ben Foster over Bridges, but I'll never get so lucky. It's too bad Michael Shannon can't get some of this Nocturnal Animals love.

Original Screenplay
Hell or High Water - Taylor Sheridan
I, Daniel Blake - Paul Laverty
La La Land - Damien Chazelle
Manchester by the Sea - Kenneth Lonergan
Moonlight - Barry Jenkins
Stop giving La La Land screenplay nominations. It's a great film but it's screenplay is so by the book.

Adapted Screenplay
Arrival - Eric Heisserer
Hacksaw Ridge - Robert Schenkkan, Andrew Knight
Hidden Figures - Theodore Melfi, Allison Schroeder
Lion - Luke Davies
Nocturnal Animals - Tom Ford

Outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer
The Girl with All the Gifts - Mike Carey (writer), Camille Gatin (producer)
The Hard Stop - George Amponsah (writer/director/producer), Dionne Walker (writer/producer)
Notes on Blindness - Peter Middleton (writer/director/producer), James Spinney (writer/director), Jo-Jo Ellison (producer)
The Pass - John Donnelly (writer), Ben A William (director)
Under the Shadow - Babak Anvari (writer/director), Emily Leo, Oliver Roskill, Lucan Toh (producers)

Film not in the English language
Dheepan
Julieta
Mustang
Son of Saul
Toni Erdmann
I love Mustang. Son of Saul was very depressing. I haven't seen the rest.

Documentary
13th
The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years
The Eagle Huntress
Notes on Blindness
Weiner

Animated Film
Finding Dory
Kubo and the Two Strings
Moana
Zootropolis

Original Music
Arrival - Johann Johannsson
Jackie - Mica Levi
La La Land - Justin Hurwitz
Lion - Dustin O'Halloran, Hauschka
Nocturnal Animals - Abel Korzeniowski
I love these though I wish Moonlight would gotten a score nomination as well.

Cinematography
Arrival - Bradford Young
Hell or High Water - Giles Nuttgens
La La Land - Linus Sandgren
Lion - Greig Fraser
Nocturnal Animals - Seamus McGarvey

Editing
Arrival - Joe Walker
Hacksaw Ridge - John Gilbert
La La Land - Tom Cross
Manchester by the Sea - Jennifer Lame
Nocturnal Animals - Joan Sobel

Production Design
Doctor Strange - John Bush, Charles Wood
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - Stuart Craig, Anna Pinnock
Hail, Caesar! - Jess Gonchor, Nancy Haigh
La La Land - Sandy Reynolds-Wasco, David Wasco
Nocturnal Animals - Shane Valentino, Meg Everist
This is a pretty cool nomination for Doctor Strange. I hated Hail, Caesar so my bias doesn't allow me to appreciate that one.

Costume Design
Allied - Joanna Johnston
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - Colleen Atwood
Florence Foster Jenkins - Consolata Boyle
Jackie - Madeline Fontaine
La La Land - Mary Zophres

Make-up and Hair
Doctor Strange - Jeremy Woodhead
Florence Foster Jenkins - J Roy Helland, Daniel Phillips
Hacksaw Ridge - Shane Thomas
Nocturnal Animals - Donald Mowat, Yolanda Toussieng

Deepwater Horizon
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Hacksaw Ridge
La La Land

I wish Captain America: Civil War would get a visual effects nomination. Just look at Vision.

  1. I, Daniel Blake is a very British focus film, I can't imgaging it getting much tract outside the US. It's about the benefits system in the UK. Great film. Deserves to be there. I think it will do well at the BAFTAs

I think these things 'out of the norm' are mostly British films or British talent.

Personally, I think Michael Shannon should get some love for Elvis & Nixon more than Nocturnal Animals

    1. Michael Shannon was so great in Elvis & Nixon, I agree. He needs more love period.

  2. I, Daniel Blake is in my watchlist as it's a film that I want to see. Largely because it's by Ken Loach who is a big fucking deal in Europe.

    1. Apparently I'll need to see it now too after all this BAFTA love.

    2. If you haven't seen anything by Ken Loach. There's 2 films of his I recommend as starting points. Kes and The Wind that Shakes the Barley.

  3. This Fences snub is an abomination.

I haven't seen I, Daniel Blake. But apparently I should...

Under the Shadow is very good, not scary though.

While I love that Nocturnal Animals is back in the conversation it should have never been omitted from, Barry Jenkins should definitely be nominated.

How Girl on the Train is in any awards contest, I'll never know.

    I'm team Jake G too!!!!

When in doubt, choose Taraji's performance in Hidden Figures.

The screenplay for La La Land is absolutely ridiculous, especially since it was SO generic.

Love to see Mustang here, but hoping Julieta wins this.

    1. Taraji was the best in Hidden Figures but Best Actress is so crowded. I hope she's a surprise nomination on Oscar morning still.

I love La La Land but the screenplay IS so generic. I agree.

  4. I really don't get why Moonlight or Fences are eligible for BAFTA, considering they aren't even out in UK cinemas until the week after the awards! I know they'll be great movies, though.
Hey, we love doing crazy things in the UK. Like inviting Stephen Hawking to our awards ceremony and then giving every award to The Theory of Everything! Not that I'm still bitter...
