Thursday Movie Picks: Twisty Thrillers

Plot twist.........actually not really, but this week at Wandering Through the Shelves we're talking about twisty thrillers. This is such a broad topic and there are so many great films that fall into it. I have a little theme within a theme here. These are thrillers that I saw quite some time after they were actually released.

1) Frailty

I was so late in seeing this film. I didn't see it until 2013 and I happened to catch it on IFC one afternoon. I was blown away by it, and my husband couldn't believe I had never seen it before.

2) Fight Club

My friends and I put this in one night at their house, and the first words out of someone's mouth were "can you believe...*spoils ending*" Followed by several apologies because I was the only one that hadn't seen it. Even knowing the ending ahead of time, I enjoyed the hell out of this movie.

3) Mulholland Drive

This was on one of my Blind Spot lists and I'm so glad I watched it. Don't ask me what happened in the last 30 minutes, I still don't get it, but I liked everything else.

  1. OMG FRAILTY! GREAT pick! Another one that almost no one remembers now. Very twisty and great acting too.

I have such mixed feelings on Fight Club. Sometimes I love it, sometimes I'm repulsed by it. I always think Brad Pitt is great in it, though.

I still haven't seen Mulholland Drive, and I hate myself for it.

    1. Watch it! Maybe you'll understand the last part. I'm still trying to work it out lol.

Frailty is insanely underrated. I wish I would've seen it earlier.

  2. I've seen the second two and they are good fits. Wish I could say I liked them more than I did which wasn't much. Good acting but neither moved me.

You're right it is a broad theme so easy to come up with three.

North by Northwest (1959)-Poor Roger Thornhill (Cary Grant) is having a hell of a bad day. The mild mannered (but impeccably dressed) ad exec has been mistaken for a government agent and kidnapped by international spies from whom he manages to escape leading to a chase across the country amid many complications. One of Alfred Hitchcock’s best thrillers with turns and twists aplenty performed by a top flight cast including besides Grant-Eva Marie Saint, James Mason and Martin Landau.

The Tenant (1976)-Polish émigré (Roman Polanski who also directed) arrives in Paris and moves into an apartment in a rundown building whose previous resident attempted suicide by jumping out one of the windows. As his sanity begins to crack he is shunned by the other residents (including Isabelle Adjani, Melvyn Douglas and Shelley Winters) as he starts to assume personality traits of the previous tenant. Strange and unsettling.

Phone Booth (2002)-Cocky married publicist Stu Shepard (Colin Farrell) has a girl, Pam (Katie Holmes) on the side. Not wanting his wife to discover his duplicity he calls Pam on one of the few remaining public telephones in New York City. Just as he completes his latest call the phone rings, Stu answers and The Caller tells him he has a gun pointed at him and if he attempts to leave or alert anyone he will be killed. As he tries to figure out an escape the situation twists and turns as it escalates in danger.

    1. Phone Booth was way better than it had any right being, while I didn't love it, I have a lot of respect for what it pulled off. I haven't seen The Tenant, I saw North by Northwest and I liked it immediately after watching it, but now a few years later, I don't remember a lot of that film at all.

  3. Frailty is a disturbing film that is also quite brilliant. Fight Club is so dirty and dark but did not see that coming. i have not seen your last film but am aware of it

  8. Mulholland Dr HAS to be on a list like this, right? What a twisty classic. You can dive into that one again and again and still get something out of it.
