Thursday Movie Picks: Movies Set in Hospitals

This week's theme from Wandering Through The Shelves is movies set in hospitals. There's plenty to choose from this week, I decided to go with the theme of mental hospitals.


1) It's Kind of a Funny Story - I have some issues with this film overall, but it is one that's stayed with me even years after I've seen it. It might not always be realistic, but it's sweet. 


2) Unsane - I never would've guessed that I would love a movie shot on a cell phone so much. Claire Foy is brilliant in this.


3) Girl, Interrupted - The O.G mental hospital flick for me. I loved this as a teenager. It's been years since I've seen it, and I'd like to watch again.

    Unsane is still that one film in your list that I haven't seen but we do share a pick with It's Kind of a Funny Story as I too went on a thematic pick as all of them are set in mental hospitals.

    I've heard of the first two but have only seen Girl, Interrupted. I can't say I loved it, or even liked it very much but it certainly showed what Angelina Jolie is capable of.

    Of course the first thing that came to mind was The Hospital written by Paddy Chayefsky and starring George C. Scott and the divine Diana Rigg. It's a dark satire with some frightening observations about the medical profession but a good film.

    I have not seen the first 2 movies but I love Girl, Interrupted which is such a good film and often forgotten now which is weird since so many big names are in it.

      Watching the Brittany Murphy doc on HBO Max made me want to see it again.

    I've only seen It's Kind of a Funny Story and I've also read the book for that one. Although, I gotta admit that I remember very little from it, so it didn't leave the biggest impression. I probably would have worked around the theme and picked things like "Just Like Heaven" or "The Lake House", which have hospitals in them, even though it's not the main setting haha

Recently, I was talking to someone about who I thought were the best child actors when I was also a child.  Two that really stood out to me were Elijah Wood and Joseph Mazello, and one film those two were in together was called Radio Flyer.  Then I was reminded about the uniqueness of this film. Indie Gems: Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon

Passionate about your profession? I had never heard of this film until it ended up on one of Jason's favorite horror movie lists around Halloween. It immediately sounded interesting to me, so of course I threw it in my Netflix queue. (and if I'm just now watching it after adding it around Halloween, you know how ridiculous my queue is) Taylor (Angela Goethals) is a journalist who, along with a film crew decides to follow around a serial killer named Leslie Vernon. (Nathan Baesel) He plans on doing the typical slasher thing - getting a bunch of drunk teens in an abandoned house and knocking them off one by one. He gets advice from a retired serial killer, Eugene (Scott Wilson) and is threatened by a man who's on to him, Doc Holloran (Robert Englund) Taylor and crew are there capturing it all. Earlier this week I made a post where I ran through the letters of the alphabet with my favorite movie titles. There were a few people that suggested I turn it into a blogathon, and I've never done that before. So here goes nothing!
