Thursday Movie Picks: Movies with a Body Part in the Title

This week's theme from Wandering Through The Shelves was a suggestion by yours truly that I'm grateful that Wanderer picked! I thought it sounded fun, and I had a specific movie in mind while thinking of it. Here are three films I love:

1) Whisper of the Heart -
I'm sure anyone who follows me on Letterboxd is tired of hearing about my Studio Ghibli watch, but I swear this one gets better and better every time. It's such a cute little first love story.

2) The Eyes of Tammy Faye -
Is Jessica Chastain actually going to win an Oscar for this? Maybe. Truthfully I really liked this movie. It was funny and the ending is actually kind of genius.

3) Wristcutters: A Love Story -
This one is very offbeat, but I like it. It's one that I've seen several times and never get sick of.

  1. I'm 0 for 3 and have only heard of two.

I'm sure since the first is anime you won't be surprised I have zero idea about it and can say with assurity that I'll never watch it.

I've heard of Wristcutters but that title and a slender knowledge about its plot has kept me at bay.

I'm anxious to see The Eyes of Tammy Faye (I have seen the original documentary by the same name-that Tammy Faye Bakker was a strange woman) and will as soon as the opportunity presents itself. Even though I haven't seen it yet I'm pulling for Jessica Chastain to win, she's a real talent who hasn't really hasn't had the career she should have.

An interesting theme you chose! Plenty of ways to go.

I instantly thought of my favorite Carole Lombard comedy "Hands Across the Table", "In Name Only" is my favorite one of her dramas. It's a great showcase for Carole as a gold-digging manicurist with a good heart who teams with broke playboy Fred MacMurray to better their situation but then love gets in the way. There's also "Banjo on My Knee", an early Barbara Stanwyck film which is a pastiche of comedy, drama and musical and sort of a mess but with a good cast including Joel McCrea, Buddy Ebsen and Walter Brennan. Third is a movie I absolutely hated-Sam Peckinpah's "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia" his typical uber violent bloodbath but it fits!

    1. I think Tammy Faye is on HBO Max right now if you have it. I think she's great and has a good chance of winning.

  2. I'd like to see Chastain win, because I adore her. But I haven't seen the movie yet. I know the makeup is getting a ton of awards but it looks a bit off to me.

    1. It's surprisingly not as distracting as I thought it would be.

  3. I still have not seen any of your picks but I do want to see the Eyes of Tammy Faye since I remember the whole debacle of these 2. Her makeup was just scary.

  5. Haven't seen any of this.
I've only seen Howl's Moving Castle and did not like it...so not sure if I'll ever give another Studio Ghibli movie a watch

    1. Aww that's too bad you didn't like Howls, I loved that. Whisper of the Heart and From Up on Poppy Hill are both very different from Howls and are some of my favorite Ghiblis. You could start there!

  6. I haven't seen any of these 3 films yet but I'm hoping to. Especially The Eyes of Tammy Faye though I hope to never see Jessica Chastain wear that much makeup ever again. I heard it nearly ruined her skin.

    1. That doesn't surprise me, she was covered in a lot of it. It's definitely worth seeing, her and Andrew Garfield are great.
