Thursday Movie Picks - Mystery Edition: Capers
We're starting a new monthly theme over at Wandering Through The Shelves. All during the month of September we're talking about mysteries. Our first theme is films about capers. Here's what I came up with.
1) Snatch - This is the first film to come to mind, and now I really want to watch it again. It's just so quick and fun and silly.
2) The Brothers Bloom - Admittedly, this is probably my least favorite of Rian Johnson's work, but it also came to mind pretty quickly. It's still a good enough watch if you want to round out his filmography.
3) Dog Day Afternoon - This one I'm a little iffy on it necessarily being a caper, but it's pretty light so it feels that way. Great performances by those Corleone boys ;)
I've only seen bits of Snatch and Dog Day Afternoon (I really need to watch those films) but I really did like The Brothers Bloom which I think is underrated. I really today's episode of She-Hulk and... let these sad fanboys w/ sand in their vaginas whine. They just don't get it.
ReplyDeleteNext thing you know, we're going to be seeing She-Hulk, Wanda (we know she's alive), Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, Ms. Marvel, Sylvie, Layla, Yelena, Kate Bishop, Makaari, Katy, Xialing, America, Clea, Dr. Darcy, Valkyrie, Dr. Christine Palmer, Lady Sif, Thena, Nebula, Gamora, Mantis, Hope, Cassie, and all of the other MCU ladies... SLAY!!!!!!!! With a very special guest that appeared in today's episode!
I haven't watched the new episode yet, but I think I know what you're referring to, and hoes can stay mad about it. I really want Wanda to turn up in one of these shows. I don't want to have to wait for Agatha's to see her again.
DeleteInteresting picks.
ReplyDeleteI thought Snatch was okay but I've never felt any pull to give it another look. Which holds even more so for Brothers Bloom. With that I think part of the problem was heightened expectations. I love both Rachel Weisz and Mark Ruffalo and like Adrian Brody but I found it rather inert.
However I adore Dog Day Afternoon!! Such a fantastic slice of intensely powerful moviemaking with riveting work by all but particularly Al Pacino in what is probably his best work. It's more a heist gone wrong film than a caper but that's a fine line distinction and I think it fits well.
This is so much easier than last week! I love caper flicks and there are so many choices. The first three that come to mind are the breezy 60's Stephen Boyd/Yvette Mimieux pic "The Caper of the Golden Bulls" set in Pamplona during the running of the bulls. The latter day Edward G. Robinson vehicle "Seven Thieves" with Joan Collins and the inevitable choice of the George Clooney/Brad Pitt "Oceans Eleven", a personal favorite.
I had high expectations for Bloom too after Brick, because that's easily in my Top 10 favorite movies , but I was let down. Not bad, just not as good as it could've been. I've never actually seen the Ocean's franchise because I'm awful. lol
DeleteI love Brick and was looking forward to The Brothers Bloom when it came out. But what a disappointment. The movie is just very awkward.
ReplyDeleteDog Day Afternoon is dark in some parts but also humorous in others. I like it along with Snatch.
I definitely felt that disappointment too because Brick was SO good. Still one of my all time favorite movies.
DeleteI missed you somehow...at least I am here now. I have yet to see your first 2 picks but I want to because they look good to me. I really liked Dog Day and thought it was excellent.
ReplyDeleteThanks for swinging back!
