Thursday Movie Picks: Workplace - The Female Experience

This week's theme from Wandering Through The Shelves is about the female experience in the work place and I hate to gloom and doom everyone, but these are literally the first movies that came to mind...

1) She Said -
Last year's investigative reporter film about the women who broke the story about Harvey Weinstein was very well done, but didn't seem to resonate with a larger audience. Probably because of the subject matter.

2) The Assistant -
With a quiet performance by Julia Garner, this is the day in the life of an assistant to a powerful figurehead (kind of like the one taken down in She Said. *cough cough*)

3) The Devil Wears Prada
- Keeping with the theme of horrible bosses, at least we're dealing with cattiness over harassments here.

  1. The only film in that list I've seen is The Devil Wears Prada as it's become kind of a comfort film of sorts that I have joy in re-watching. I do want to see the other 2 films.

  2. I haven't seen She Said yet, but The Assistant is a really rough go. It's a film that I wished a lot more people would see.

I think I like The Devil Wears Prada a lot less than I think I'm supposed to.

    1. I feel like The Devil Wears Prada has really had a resurgence over the past few years. It feels a lot more loved now than it did when it came out. I wish more people would see The Assistant as well.

  3. Well those are dark picks but I'm always up for a theme within the theme!

I've only seen The Devil Wears Prada which I liked but didn't love. Meryl looms so large it’s hard to remember anyone else but both Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci do manage to own their space. Anne Hathaway however is overshadowed.

My first impulse was His Girl Friday and to do a Rosalind Russell trio since in the 1940's her image was the boss lady but I could only find one other of her films that truly fit so I decided to focus on films about secretaries instead and came up with these three.

Secrets of a Secretary (1931)-Claudette Colbert stars as a society girl who becomes a social secretary when her father dies penniless only to discover her ex-husband is blackmailing her employer’s daughter. Claudette straightens things out and of course finds love along the way.

His Private Secretary (1933)-Small town girl Marion Hall (Evalyn Knapp) elopes with playboy Dick Wallace (a 26-year-old John Wayne!) and wants to settle down but his businessman father, who’s never met Marion, thinks she’s a gold-digger. She takes a job in his office under her maiden name to prove she’s worthy.

More Than a Secretary (1936)-When Carol Baldwin (Jean Arthur) co-owner of a secretarial school visits magazine editor Fred Gilbert (George Brent) to find out why he runs through secretaries, she's mistaken for an applicant. Challenged, she accepts the position, sets the magazine back on its feet while Fred and she bicker until they fall for each other.

    1. I haven't seen any of your picks! I have seen Secretary with Maggie Gyllenhaal, which is great lol. That could go with your theme withing a theme.

  4. I'm not sure if I saw this documentary about Weinstein but I have seen one that is just so sad but, sadly, nothing new. Weinstein probably has Jack Warner as his hero. Joan Crawford is just one who slept with this guy but she's someone who had no problem sleeping her way to the top. Others were horribly taken advantage of or given the reputation as being cold or nasty. I wouldn't mind seeing the 2nd film and we Match with the 3rd!

    1. It's not a documentary, but it's very clearly based on him. They never call the producer they're working for by name.

  5. She Said is on my to watch list. I hadn’t heard of The Assistant so I’ll lookout for it now.

  6. Somehow She Said was not on my radar but I should definitely check it out!
