Review: Twisters

A retired tornado-chaser and meteorologist, Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones) is persuaded to return to Oklahoma to work with a new team and new technologies.

The original Twister was never a serious movie, and it's quasi-sequel isn't here to be either. This is the kind of film you go to in the theater with the best sound system possible, and just enjoy your popcorn. To its credit, the actual story they're telling in Twisters is pretty interesting. You have Kate, and Javi (Anthony Ramos) who have their backgrounds in meteorology and want to "disrupt" a tornado vs a youtube storm chaser, Tyler (Glen Powell) with a team that don't have the paper degree, but plenty of knowledge and experience. Both approaching these storms from different sides, but there to help people nonetheless.

I did have to laugh about that helping bit though. If you grew up in the Midwest, you probably ran a lot of tornado drills as a child. You probably also ran them at your job as an adult. Or you've been out and about when one struck. So when these groups of people start swooping in and directing others where to go, like they don't already living in freaking Oklahoma was amusing to me. I know it added to the drama but all I could think of the entire time was "these people know not to be by windows."

Then there's the simping! Oh, the simping. Javi gives Kate so much credit and grace, which is way more than she deserves considering how much she uses him throughout the film. Then she's over here simping Tyler the human quokka, who is returning the simp favors. There is so much unintentional hilarity here, especially when the opening scene shows us that Kate was previously with Jeb (the beautiful Daryl McCormick)

Apologies for the amount of times I just said "simp" in this review.

The storm scenes are very thrilling and that's what I imagine most people are going to see anyways. It's fun, the story might get unintentionally funny at times but it's at least compelling and never drags.

  1. I heard this is a really good film despite that hilarious rant from Mark Kermode that I heard a few days ago. I liked Twister and I hope to see this when it arrives on streaming.

    1. Yeah, it really is a lot better than it has any right being. I think if it had two better lead actors, it could've soared even further.

  2. I have to look up simp. This looks just as stupid as the first one. I will see it one day, when it's on TV. I just looked up simp...that would irritate me to no end. Oh...that's my brother! Lol

    1. LOL....SIMP as a word cracks me up. I heard my 11 year old use it in a sentence last year, and I realized it made its way off the internet and into real life. Yikes

  3. My wife and I have a very weird relationship with Twister. Because of that, I'm intrigued by this, but also kind of don't want to see it because I don't want to spoil the original.

    1. This thankfully has nothing to do with the original so you should be good!

  4. Ahah, I had to look up a few terms you used in this review. 'human quokka' LOL! I mentioned in my review that I find Daisy unconvincing in this role, she's just not that interesting. Glad you acknowledge how beautiful Daryl McCormick is... way sexier than Glen Powell IMHO!

    1. Everyone says he looks like a capybara but I think he looks like a quokka! lol I agree. Daryl McCormick should be the one everyone is drooling over.
