Thursday Movie Picks: Animated Movies

This week's theme from Wandering Through the Shelves is animated movies. I left WALL-E and The Lion King out of here even though those two are my favorites, as I've used them before. This was really hard to narrow down to three, but here are some animated films that I adore.

1) Sleeping Beauty

Aurora has always been my favorite Disney princess, despite saying very little in this movie at all. She just has the best singing voice, okay!?

2) The Secret of NIMH

This movie was a staple in my house growing up. It was darker than most Disney films, and for some reason most of my friends had never heard of it, so it felt cool to me.

3) InuYasha: Swords of an Honorable Ruler

Alright, I feel like I can be honest with you guys. I don't watch a lot of anime, but I have this weird obsession with InuYasha. When I was in high school, it was on Adult Swim every night when I got off work, so I'd watch it and do my homework. Then I got really into it. Someone was uploading the manga on photobucket, and I read it every week. I've seen every episode. Now, the movies they made were so so at best, but this one, the 3rd one, was actually really fucking awesome.

Honorable Mentions: The Last Unicorn, A Bug's Life, The Land Before Time, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Tarzan, Sampson and Sally, Spirited Away, All Dogs Go To Heaven and The Black Cauldron.

  1. Add me to the list of people who haven't heard of The Secret of NIMH. I might have seen Sleeping Beauty when I was very, very young but I can't remember. I haven't seen the old Disney animated classics in years.

  2. I didn't think anyone would be able to stump me on not one but two of their picks this week but I have never heard of either NIMH or InuYasha. NIMH in particular has my attention.

    1. It's based off a book too, but I never got around to reading it. The story is great.

  4. OMG The Secret of NIMH. I remember being scared of that movie when I was a kid LOL. The book is one of my favorites.

Never really liked Sleeping Beauty much. Outside of Maleficent turning into a dragon (I LOVE dragons) it bored me.

    1. My three year old loves Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella now. It makes me so happy. I can definitely see how NIMH would be scary, that rat in the thorn bush was pretty damn terrifying. (and then the sequel made him into this big oof. Like, no. You were scary. You can't be nice and dumb now)

  6. Aww, I just watched Sleeping Beauty for the first time a few months ago with the girls. Great movie.

I, too, felt cool when I saw The Secret of NIMH as a kid, mostly because my parents banned it from the house :-P

    1. Oh man, really? My family loved watching this together. Then we watched the sequel on Christmas Eve one year because I got it as a gift, and my dad apologized when it was over because it was so stupid. lol

  8. I'll add myself to the list of 'never heard of The Secret of NIMH'! Definitely going to have to check that out though. I haven't seen InuYasha since High School so that's a blast from the past for me! I was more of a Bleach fan at the time :P

    1. lol I was never really into anime, but Inuyasha really stuck with me (though I've learned now that it's not exactly the best made anime out there)

I should've described what Secret of NIMH is about. I didn't realize so many people didn't see it.

  11. I haven't seen Sleeping Beauty since I was a very small child. Heard of Nimh but never saw it. The anime just doesn't do it for me, at least in the experiences I've had. Oh, animation week. My downfall. I need to get in the game.
