Thursday Movie Picks: Movies Set in High School

This week's theme from Wandering Through the Shelves is movies set in a school. Allow me to pressure you high school style and tell you that all the cool kids are participating in this weekly event, so you should too. This was actually kind of hard as I've used a LOT of my favorite high school set movies on previous themes (Mean Girls, Superbad, American Pie, etc) so here's what I came up with:

1) Not Another Teen Movie
This is a good example of a parody done right. I love this movie. It's so stupid, but so hilarious. Plus now it's even funnier to think about Captain America doing that.

2) Brick
While the other movies I picked spend most of their time within the halls and the classrooms of school, Brick spends most of it on the grounds. This is one of my all time favorite movies. It's so good I actually looked past one of my biggest pet peeves in films, adults that are playing teenagers.

3) Lucas
So in retrospect, this movie has so many cliches, but I watched it quite a bit when I was a kid. I wouldn't mind watching it again now that I'm thinking about it.

Comments

  1. I've always wanted to see Brick, especially since I adore JGL!

Lucas is such a classic. Corey Haim was 80s perfection <3

  2. Brick! I chose Brick too!!!

Yeah, I had the same issue you did, with having chosen quite a bit of these teen movies already, but I'm happy with my 3.

I've never head of Lucas...I'll have to check that out.

    1. Thanks! Lucas came out in 86 I think. I think so many great coming of age moviea came out after it, it mostly got forgotten about.

  4. Haven't actually seen any of your choices, but Brick has been picked so much I simply have to see it. Like Wendell I haven't heard of Lucas either.

  5. LOVE Not Another Teen Movie. SO funny! I almost picked Lucas this week. Love Corey Haim in the title role, and the young Winona Ryder too. But like you, it's been so long since I've seen it and I don't remember it too well.

I am agog at the love for Brick this week! Who knew it was so popular (not that it doesn't deserve it)?

  6. Not Another Teen Movie may not be great cinema but it's a funny, pleasant watch and the place where I discovered what an agile comedian Chris Evans is.

Lucas is such a tender, sweet film, what a shame the two male leads ended up as such train wrecks, it really says some great things about that period of growing up.

I am as amazed as everyone else at the popularity of Brick today, it was one of my picks as well. I saw it in the theatre when it came out and it received strong reviews but then sort of disappeared, I guess JGL's rise to prominence helped with people seeking it out.

I saw you mention 2:37 in one of the comments, that was my extra pick this week as well. I saw it at a film festival the year it came out and it received a tiny release in the States and then vanished so I'm glad to see that someone else has seen it. I can't say I "enjoyed" it, it's much too grim and emotionally brutal for that word to fit but it is a worthwhile film.

    1. I really dig 2:37, though I know a lot of people complained that it was too similar to Elephant, but I didn't think so. It was very dark indeed. I'm glad someone else has seen it!

  7. Oh, Britt! Not Another Teen Movie? YES!!!!! I love that one. One of the few modern spoofs that really works.

I have to watch Brick again. It didn't do that much for me the one time I saw it years ago. Everybody is singing its praises today, so I reckon it's re-watch time.

Lucas is a beautiful 80s teen movie. Love that one. Haven't seen it in years. Great picks!!

  8. It is now weird to see Captain America wearing nothing but whipped cream. I still think it's hilarious.

Brick I would say is my favorite high school film.
