Thursday Movie Picks: Father/Son Relationships

This week's theme from Wandering Through The Shelves is father/son relationships. The only rule is that they must be biologically related (which unfortunately ruled out one of my favorites, There Will be Blood.)

1) The Music Never Stopped
Not enough people saw this wonderful little indie with top notch performances from J.K Simmons and Lou Taylor Pucci. Maybe more people will now that J.K Simmons has finally won an Oscar.

2) The Lion King
Simba and Mufasa's relationship is what drives one of Disney's best features. This is still one of my favorites to this day.

3) Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back/Return of the Jedi.
How about that daddy reveal at the end of Empire Strikes Back? Luke had to rethink his entire strategy after that. It probably has the most famous father/son reveal of all time.

  1. Star Wars popped into my mind as well one, certainly the most famous father-son relationship I can think of. I haven't seen The Lion King for almost a decade and The Music Never Stopped looks like a hidden gem

    1. I really dug The Music Never Stopped. I couldn't remember the last time I saw a live action PG movie I enjoyed until I saw that one.

  2. The Lion King is certainly one of the best! The Place Beyond the Pines is also great (my favorite films of 2013). But, Field of Dreams takes the cake, in this department, as someone who has a personal connection with his father that was largely developed on the baseball field.

    1. I actually kind of hate Field of Dreams. :P I know I'm in the minority, but I can't stand Kevin Costner. I didn't like The Place Beyond the Pines as much as I had hoped, but you're right about it being good for this theme.

  3. I almost put There Will be Blood for my list, haha.
Everytime I see Simba trying to wake his dead father is just....

    1. That was the first thing I picked too, then I was like "damn it, that wasn't his real kid!" lol

  4. LOVE that you went for Empire/Jedi, the last two Star Wars movies (I am doing my best to pretend the new one does not exist until I hear only good things about it. I just do not trust JJ Abrams). Never heard of The Music Never Stopped, but I love JK Simmons so onto the list it goes!

  5. I almost chose The Lion King, but I backed out thinking everyone else had the same idea. I think you might be the only one I've seen so far, ahha. Anyway, it's a great choice.

I've never been the biggest fan of Star Wars. I've made several attempts at sitting down and watching them all, but I just can't do it. It's one of those films I have childhood memories about, even though I was never an actual fan.

    1. They're definitely not for everyone, so I totally understand that. That's funny, I picked the Lion King because I was sure everyone else would pick Finding Nemo.

  6. The Music Never Stopped is a great choice. I love to see the more obscure titles chosen. J. K. Simmons is such an amazing actor, I was delighted to see him win the Oscar last Sunday. The Star Wars pick is wonderfully inventive!

    1. I try hard to pick indies with these, but I kept running into the issue of the child being biologically related. lol

  7. I have never seen The Music Never Stopped but I think I might seek out more JK Simmons. His Whiplash performance still will not leave me. I've never been a huge Lion King fan, but it's a perfect pick here. Star Wars picks: CLASSIC! They didn't even cross my mind.

  8. Ha ha! Star Wars is a great choice -- I actually considered that too. And The Lion King is an amazing pick. I need to watch The Music Never Stopped.

    1. I've only seen it on mine. There's not a lot of repeats this week at all. Only The Pursuit of Happyness that I've noticed.

  10. Star Wars is, for lack of better words, a fucking brilliant choice! I also love that you included Lion King. Never heard of the first film, but I'm intrigued.

  12. We were definitely on the same wavelength as I was seriously close to picking both The Lion King and the two Star Wars flicks you did. I ultimately decided against it in part because I thougt lots of others would. Turns out I was wrong, lol. Never heard of the other, but I do like JKS so that's now on my radar. Great picks!
