Top 10 Films of 2014 (and bottom 5)

Here are my top 10 favorite films of 2014, and of course, the bottom five. Keep in mind with the bottom five, there are probably worse movies that were released, but these are the ones I actually watched.

Top 10

Honorable Mention: (The green films were in my Top 10 at one point, but were eventually replaced with something else) Foxcatcher, Guardians of the Galaxy, Filth, Breathe In, Obvious Child, Neighbors, God Help The Girl, Night Moves, Captain American 2: The Winter Solider, Enemy

Bottom 5: (No gifs for these assholes)
Ride Along
The Amazing Spiderman 2
The Monuments Men
A Promise
They Came Together

  1. They Came Together was sucky indeed.. the idea was okay, but I disliked it so so so much I didn't even finish it!

    1. I'm ashamed of myself for finishing. That has got to be one of the worst parodies I've ever seen.

  2. The Theory of Everything gif is really pretty. I hate using that word for a gif, but it's been said, ahha.
The Amazing Spiderman 2 was so fucking stupid. That last scene with the dumb ass kid who tried to fight the bad guy was.. OMG!!! I cringed so bad...
I liked Enemy, but was petty "meh" about it. I don't get people saying Gyllenhaal's performance was better in Enemy than in Nightcrawler.

    1. Oh nooo, Nightcrawler was better by a long shot, IMO.

The special effects in Amazing Spiderman 2 were awful. I don't know why I even watched that movie.

  3. Excellent list! I really need to see Snowpiercer and I Origins. They're on my radar. Just never got to them.

  4. Wow! I have The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in my own list as one of the worst films of 2014. I fucking hate that movie. I can now forgive Sam Raimi for Spider-Man 3 and no longer ask for my money back because at least... he didn't make that piece of shit.

    1. lol Yes, Raimi can be forgiven for that one. At least he acknowledge's his mistakes with it too. Hopefully Marvel will do great things with Spiderman.

  5. Great list! I've yet to see Whiplash or I Origins or Snowpiercer, but I support your decisions, for the most part. Unfortunately, I didn't care for The Theory of Everything as much as I expected, which was quite disappointing.

I'll have my lists out in the next week or two!

    1. I can't wait to read yours! I think Theory rubbed a lot of people the wrong way since it was obvious Oscar bait, but it was worthy bait. I loved it.

  6. Nice. I've only seen 2 of your best. Loved Gone Girl. HtTYD2, not so much. Should see Snowpiercer before the end of the week. I also hated TASM2 and wasn't too fond of Ride Along, either.

    1. I hope you love Snowpiercer as much as I did. It's just so different from anything else out there. There were a few missteps, but not enough to make it a bad film.

  7. Great post!

I've seen 3 movies on your list and liked them all: Snowpiercer, How to Train Your Dragon, and Gone Girl. Oh, and I saw Spiderman 2 also. must not have liked it much either since I'd already forgotten it.

    1. Spiderman 2 was a bore. I hope you get a chance to see the others as well!

  8. How is it that I always manage to miss the most popular movies? Out of this entire list I've only seen one, which was Snowpiercer (yet another one I forgot to include on my own list). It was an interesting movie with great action but with a cast that I thought could have benefited from greater gender diversity. Actually, films that could have benefited from a greater female presence could be a whole list in itself. I should get on that at some point.

Ranking the worst is tricky. I was tempted to do a list of my own but I could only get two: A Most Wanted Man (which I felt was much too convoluted and didn't make a lot of sense) and Lucy (the fact that it was based entirely on an idea that has been scientifically disproven didn't help).

    1. A Most Wanted Man was definitely a let down, but I never saw Lucy. You really should check out some of those movies in my list. Birdman, Gone Girl, and Whiplash are my top 3, easily.

  9. You make your own gifs?

    Also, I Origins...

    :-P

LOVE your #1, for sure...but I sadly I haven't seen a lot (Nightcrawler, Whiplash, Theory, Imitation).

That gif for Whiplash scared me...I had to watch it for like five minutes before I realized that was a bandaid and NOT a piece of flesh.

    1. OMG, it being a piece of flesh would've actually been kind of bad ass...hmm.

I hope you like all of those when you finally do see them, and when I saw your I Origins review go up, I knew you'd say something here. lol

I try to make my own gifs, but I'm not very good at it, and I can only do it if the scene I want is on youtube. (makeagif.com) So a lot of times I end up editing existing gifs from giphy or something. I use online-image-editor.com quite a bit to edit gifs and pictures. Sometimes I use lunapic.com for other filters, and ezgif.com when I want to resize something and have it not look so grainy.

I want photoshop, but it's so damn expensive. My husband would kill me. lol

  10. I've seen half of your best movies list, and they were all great. They Came Together was bad, though probably not as bad as other movies that came out.

    1. Yeah, there were probably worse movies out there, I just managed to avoid most of them.

  11. So,it turns out I've seen four of your top ten and two of your bottom five. Honestly, I figured that would be the inverse with the amount of crap that I watch.

I'm bummed I missed Birdman theatrically (and have avoided all posts about, for the most part). I had a week and totally blew it. Oh well...looks like it's on blu ray shortly.

Great list, Brittani. But damn that Whiplash gif looks like it could be from the Evil Dead remake. Yikes...

    1. Whiplash is sooo good. My theater got it back for Oscar season, thank God. I had the same issue you had with Birdman. It was here for like two weeks, then vanished.

I hope you dig Birdman when you do see it.

  12. OUCH! Bottom five for The Monuments Men? I kinda loved its nostalgia (but I am one of the few). I'm still standing by the god-awful The Other Woman as the worst piece of trash to place on a screen in 2014.

I really need to see I Origins. I have heard several things about it. Gotta get on that!

    Great list Brittani!

    1. I loved I Origins, it was such a clever little indie.

Monuments Men was terrible. The trailers made it look so good. No wonder it got bumped from it's original release date. The Other Woman did look like trash. I skipped it.

  13. I love those gifs! And the list too of course, but those gifs are so pretty :)

    1. I have high hopes for the new ones, but I just don't want another origin story. Give me adult Spiderman.

  15. Awesome list Brittani!! Glad to see Birdman, Imitation Game and Snowpiercer on your list. Oh I can't wait to see Nightcrawler this weekend, FINALLY it was available to rent this past Tuesday. I'm so with you about The Monuments Men, so disappointing despite the stellar cast.
