Indie Gems: Pride

They know what it feels like to have everyone against them.

Pride follows a group of gay activists who help support striking miners during the summer of 1984. Margaret Thatcher hates them, and hates the miners, so they feel they have something in common.

The unique thing about Pride was how well the cast worked together. There's some great actors here; Paddy Considine, Imelda Staunton, Bill Nighy, Andrew Scott, etc. But not one stands out above the rest. The entire cast is equal here.

The gestures in this film were sweet, and the story very fast paced. As I type this review, it's been a few days since I've seen it. I'm still struggling a little to put my thoughts to words, but I enjoyed this very much.

Grade: B

Memorable Quote: "...my mother." - Gethin (Andrew Scott)

  1. I'm right with you. This was sweet...but I too only gave it a B (I think even a B-) and I meant that with no disrespect to the film, which was a very good film...but that's all it is...and it never really stuck with me.

I think in my review I liken it to those suckers my kids get at the bank...they're sweet and delicious and gone in like two minutes and ten minutes later my kids have literally forgotten they ever had one.

    1. lol. True. I think I wrote this review about three weeks ago now. I still think it's definitely a good film, and I'd watch it again.

  2. The premise is fascinating, and this movie has a great cast. EVen though it's only a "B" movie, per you and Andrew, it's not to be missed. :-)

    1. A B movie is still a good movie, IMO. Even some C+'s are good. According to my rating scale anyways.

  3. LOVED the film. It was just so happy and hopeful. You are right the entire cast is great but for me Cooper stood out because he played someone nice and he usually plays assholes

    1. Happy and hopeful indeed! I did like seeing Moriarty in there.

  4. I adore this movie so much and wish more people had seen it. It's a genuine "crowd-pleaser" and "feel-good movie" that honestly earns every bit of those monikers - it doesn't cheapen itself to do so like so many other films do. It's my #1 of the year. "Where are my lesbians?" is probably the biggest laugh I got from any movie in 2014.

  5. I really enjoyed it, but it doesn't really stick out from last year's crop of films. Still, it's very sweet and well-intentioned.

    1. I'm not sure how memorable it will be down the line, but it was still a good film to watch.
