Thursday Movie Picks: Movies based on Graphic Novels

This week's theme from Wandering Through the Shelves is movies based on graphic novels. The only catch is they cannot be about super heroes. This one was a little tricky, because obviously super heroes immediately come to mind when you think of graphic novels. But here are a few great ones.

 1) Sin City

 Plenty of the characters in this movie are good fighters, but none of them are superheroes, even though a few would make good ones. This film is absolutely stunning and I never get sick of watching it.

 2) Ghost World

 Did you know this was based on a graphic novel? That threw me the first time I heard it. Either way, I love this little indie. Johansson and Birch were excellent. 

 3) Scott Pilgrim vs The World

 To this day, I still don't see how this movie bombed at the box office. I know this one might seem iffy, because the evil exes could be seen as super villains, so just in case this doesn't count...

 Bonus: 30 Days of Night. This is one of the best vampire movies out there, and all three graphic novels were great as well.

    I love Scott Pilgrim, great choice. I was one of the few who went to to see it during the time it was released, doesn't deserve to be a financial failure. Sin City is also great and I even like your bonus choice.

    I love these. I'd already used Sin City in black and white movies but I've been saving Ghost World for this week. How is Thora Birch not a bigger star? I almost picked Scott Pilgrim too.

    Love all three of your picks, although for the reason you mentioned I didn't list Scott Pilgrim myself (because I wanted to). I haven't seen your bonus pick...but maybe I should.

    I've seen everything here except Ghost World. Love Sin City and 30 Days of Night. I really love Scott Pilgrim. It's just phenomenal. Might have been a little too quirky (or smart) for box office success, though. Honestly, I didn't even hear about it until it came out on DVD. That was part of its problem, right there. Not nearly enough marketing for this film.

      It was such a popular GN so I'm still shocked it didn't do as well. Maybe they thought it would market itself because of that?

    I had no idea Scott Pilgrim did badly at the box office, it's such a great film! I can't believe I missed Ghost World off my own list, I only watched it for the first time last year but I loved it!

      I think it only made like 4 Mil its opening week. It did terribly for whatever reason. Shame because I love it.

    I've only seen Ghost World from your picks and didn't care for it. I've always avoided Sin City because a friend of mine who is a huge graphic novel fan hated it and I figured if he didn't like it what chance did I have!

      You've got to see Sin City it's excellent and ao beautifully shot. I can't see anyone hating it. That surprises me.

    Sin City is like a graphic novel come to life. Just gorgeous. Ghost World is <3. I didn't love Scott Pilgrim but the effects were very clever and the energy in the performances was great.

    Nice picks! Scott Pilgrim and 30 Days of Night are on my to-watch list for this year. Sin City is absolutely visually stunning.

    Scott Pilgrim is genuinely in my Top 5 favourite films and it pains me to this day that it didn't make money at the box office! Still, it has plenty of fans and will (hopefully) endure with a cult audience.

    30 Days of Night is a great bonus pick, Ben Foster is amazing in it with his limited role, such a unique concept for the vampires that doesn't get used too often since Nosferatu. Scott Pilgrim has definitely grown on me as well, lukewarm on first watch but really love it now. - Bubbawheat

    Great picks! I have the graphic novel of Ghost World, still have to read it though. Sin City does look visually pleasing. I have to re-watch Scott Pilgrim, haven't seen it for some time.

    Great choices Brittani! I remember when 'Ghost World' came out my dad was like "oooo is that a world all about ghosts." He was very disappointed when I told him what it was about.

    Almost had 30 Days of Night as a pick, but my picks would have been a little too black and red in colour scheme.

Recently, I was talking to someone about who I thought were the best child actors when I was also a child.  Two that really stood out to me were Elijah Wood and Joseph Mazello, and one film those two were in together was called Radio Flyer.  Then I was reminded about the uniqueness of this film. Indie Gems: Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon

Passionate about your profession? I had never heard of this film until it ended up on one of Jason's favorite horror movie lists around Halloween. It immediately sounded interesting to me, so of course I threw it in my Netflix queue. (and if I'm just now watching it after adding it around Halloween, you know how ridiculous my queue is) Taylor (Angela Goethals) is a journalist who, along with a film crew decides to follow around a serial killer named Leslie Vernon. (Nathan Baesel) He plans on doing the typical slasher thing - getting a bunch of drunk teens in an abandoned house and knocking them off one by one. He gets advice from a retired serial killer, Eugene (Scott Wilson) and is threatened by a man who's on to him, Doc Holloran (Robert Englund) Taylor and crew are there capturing it all. Earlier this week I made a post where I ran through the letters of the alphabet with my favorite movie titles. There were a few people that suggested I turn it into a blogathon, and I've never done that before. So here goes nothing! Since this is my first attempt at a blogathon, it's all pretty simple, and it's hopefully a quick post that everyone can join in.
