Thursday Movie Picks: Movies based on Graphic Novels
This week's theme from Wandering Through the Shelves is movies based on graphic novels. The only catch is they cannot be about super heroes. This one was a little tricky, because obviously super heroes immediately come to mind when you think of graphic novels. But here are a few great ones.
1) Sin City
Plenty of the characters in this movie are good fighters, but none of them are superheroes, even though a few would make good ones. This film is absolutely stunning and I never get sick of watching it.
2) Ghost World
Did you know this was based on a graphic novel? That threw me the first time I heard it. Either way, I love this little indie. Johansson and Birch were excellent.
3) Scott Pilgrim vs The World
To this day, I still don't see how this movie bombed at the box office. I know this one might seem iffy, because the evil exes could be seen as super villains, so just in case this doesn't count...
Bonus: 30 Days of Night. This is one of the best vampire movies out there, and all three graphic novels were great as well.

I love Scott Pilgrim, great choice. I was one of the few who went to to see it during the time it was released, doesn't deserve to be a financial failure. Sin City is also great and I even like your bonus choice.
ReplyDeleteIt definitely doesn't. I saw it in theaters too.
DeleteI love these. I'd already used Sin City in black and white movies but I've been saving Ghost World for this week. How is Thora Birch not a bigger star? I almost picked Scott Pilgrim too.
ReplyDeleteI used Sin City there two, and when I realized that I still couldn't bring myself to remove it lol.
DeleteLove all three of your picks, although for the reason you mentioned I didn't list Scott Pilgrim myself (because I wanted to). I haven't seen your bonus pick...but maybe I should.
ReplyDeleteIt's a good vampire flick for sure! All three novels are great.
DeleteI've seen everything here except Ghost World. Love Sin City and 30 Days of Night. I really love Scott Pilgrim. It's just phenomenal. Might have been a little too quirky (or smart) for box office success, though. Honestly, I didn't even hear about it until it came out on DVD. That was part of its problem, right there. Not nearly enough marketing for this film.
ReplyDeleteIt was such a popular GN so I'm still shocked it didn't do as well. Maybe they thought it would market itself because of that?
DeleteI had no idea Scott Pilgrim did badly at the box office, it's such a great film! I can't believe I missed Ghost World off my own list, I only watched it for the first time last year but I loved it!
ReplyDelete- Allie
I think it only made like 4 Mil its opening week. It did terribly for whatever reason. Shame because I love it.
DeleteI've only seen Ghost World from your picks and didn't care for it. I've always avoided Sin City because a friend of mine who is a huge graphic novel fan hated it and I figured if he didn't like it what chance did I have!
ReplyDeleteYou've got to see Sin City it's excellent and ao beautifully shot. I can't see anyone hating it. That surprises me.
DeleteSin City is like a graphic novel come to life. Just gorgeous. Ghost World is <3. I didn't love Scott Pilgrim but the effects were very clever and the energy in the performances was great.
ReplyDeleteSin City was so good I couldn't leave it out, even though I used it once before.
DeleteFrom this list, I've only seen Scott Pilgrim. I am intrigued by 30 Days of Night.
ReplyDelete30 Days is great. It's very creepy.
DeleteNice picks! Scott Pilgrim and 30 Days of Night are on my to-watch list for this year. Sin City is absolutely visually stunning.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I hope you enjoy both of those.
DeleteScott Pilgrim is genuinely in my Top 5 favourite films and it pains me to this day that it didn't make money at the box office! Still, it has plenty of fans and will (hopefully) endure with a cult audience.
ReplyDeleteI think it will be a lasting cult favorite. No idea why it bombed so hard.
DeleteI love that Ghost World shot. I also love Scott Pilgrim.
ReplyDeleteHa! I was pretty excited about that gif. I also love Scott Pilgrim.
Delete30 Days of Night is a great bonus pick, Ben Foster is amazing in it with his limited role, such a unique concept for the vampires that doesn't get used too often since Nosferatu. Scott Pilgrim has definitely grown on me as well, lukewarm on first watch but really love it now. - Bubbawheat
ReplyDeleteI should've made it my main pick instead of a bonus one. Now I'm kind of kicking myself for it. Thanks for reading!
DeleteGreat picks! I have the graphic novel of Ghost World, still have to read it though. Sin City does look visually pleasing. I have to re-watch Scott Pilgrim, haven't seen it for some time.
ReplyDeleteI want to read Ghost World, I've only seen the film. I'll have to look out for that.
DeleteGreat choices Brittani! I remember when 'Ghost World' came out my dad was like "oooo is that a world all about ghosts." He was very disappointed when I told him what it was about.
ReplyDeleteLOL. Sounds like something my dad would say too.
DeleteAwesome picks! I should watch 30 Days of Night. Never got around to it.
ReplyDeleteIt's really cool. I never saw the DVD sequels, but the first theatrical one is excellent.
DeleteAlmost had 30 Days of Night as a pick, but my picks would have been a little too black and red in colour scheme.
ReplyDeletelol. Nothing wrong with that!
