Thursday Movie Picks: Work Place Movies
This week's theme from Wandering Through the Shelves is Work Place Movies! I tried not to go with the obvious pick, which would be Office Space. I think that movie probably comes to 95% of everyone's mind when they hear "work place movies" so I tried to pick something a little different.
1) Up in the Air
A movie about a job that requires you to fire other people from their jobs. This is my favorite Reitman film, and also one of my favorites in general. They might not be in the typical office all day, but the're traveling around, much like the rest of my picks.
2) Thank You For Smoking
Speaking of Reitman, who knew being a tobacco lobbyist could actually look so appealing? I also like how despite the entire film being about smoking, not one person is shown smoking on screen.
3) The Social Network
You know who I would never want to go into business with? Mark Zuckerberg. Even with his hilarious business cards.
Honorable mentions: Anchorman, Empire Records, Chef.
Great picks. Seen two of these films (TSN and Thank You for Smoking). Glad you didn't go for the obvious Office Space (unlike myself, haha).
ReplyDeleteI'd think I'd tolerate Mark Zuckerburg, especially if he gets me a truckload of money. I would, however, keep a close eye on him though. Make sure he doesn't weasel me out of any money.
That's true, if he threw a truckload of money at me, I'd probably put up with it. lol #shameless
DeleteI went with one of these myself!
ReplyDeleteLOL...my favorite thing about Thank You For Smoking is the mental image of Brad Pitt blowing perfect smoke rings in bed on a spaceship, or something like that. That 'pitch' was hilarious.
Yes! That was great. I loved when J.K Simmons was saying "Environmentalists" and "pussies" came up as a subtitle.

DeleteLOL, no I like these opinions! JT was decent in TSN, but I agree he shouldn't act. I love Eisenberg though.
DeleteYou and I went 2\3 on our lists!
ReplyDeleteThank you for Smoking is a great addition too, such a cool glimpse into a very strange profession.
Nice! Yeah, I love Thank You For Smoking. I didn't even feel bad about using two Reitman movies.
DeleteUp in the Air was about the workplace? I thought it was mostly about family relationships, but I can see where having the job of firing people would be difficult. It remind me of that Fry and Laurie sketch where the businessman has to figure out how to fire the man responsible for firing people.
ReplyDeleteOf course it was about a workplace. They spent 75% of that movie working and being in various offices.
DeleteNice picks! I'd love to have any job centered around traveling but I'd say no thanks to Clooney's gig. Up in the Air is one of Reitman's best.
ReplyDeleteThere is no way I could fire other people for a living. That scene where there in Detroit and the old man started crying. I'd cry too.
DeleteFunny I run the gamut on your three picks. I LOVE Thank You for Smoking so much. Aaron Eckhart is so magnetic in the lead and J.K. Simmons brilliant in his role. I've never gotten all the adoration for Social Network, it was fine but one view was enough for me. Sorry but I downright loathed Up in the Air.
ReplyDeletelol it's not for everyone, I guess. I'm glad you loved Thank You For Smoking though!
DeleteLOVE that you picked Up In The Air. Love everything about that movie. Anna Kendrick is GOLD, as is the chemistry between Vera Farmiga and George Clooney. Haven't seen Thank You For Smoking since it came out but I remember liking it a lot. I've never quite been as over the moon about TSN as others, but I really like it.
ReplyDeleteYes! Up in the Air is one of my all time favorite movies. I never get sick of watching it. It was perfect.
DeleteGreat picks. I instantly thought of Office Space, too...but I like what you went with. Up in the Air is fantastic!
ReplyDeleteI would have went with Compliance.
*shudder*
Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh that movie.
DeleteGreat picks! I haven't seen Thank You for Smoking yet.
ReplyDeleteYou should! I think you'd like it.
DeleteAll great picks (except for Empire Records which I think is total shit).
ReplyDeletelol. That's okay, I have a soft spot for that one. It's been years since I've seen it though.
DeleteGreat choices! I'd also give a shout out to The Other Guys!
ReplyDeleteOh yes, that movie cracked me up. "Aim for the bushes!"
DeleteNicely done. Ugh, I still need to see Thank You for Smoking!
ReplyDeleteWhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat go do this now!
DeleteLove love all your picks...all very good dialogue heavy movies.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
