2018 Golden Globe Predictions: Who will win, who should win

The Globes are next weekend, so now's the time where I attempt to predict who's going to win, and in some cases, who should win.

Best Motion Picture - Drama
"Call Me by Your Name"
"Dunkirk"
"The Post"
"The Shape of Water"
"Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri"
Who will win: The Post
Who should win: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri
I have only seen Three Billboards and Dunkirk from this category, so my opinion probably doesn't matter all that much, but Three Billboards is one of my favorite movies of the year and I think it should win.But I have this feeling that The Post is going to be huge at the Globes.

Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy
"The Disaster Artist"
"Get Out"
"The Greatest Showman"
"I, Tonya"
"Lady Bird"
Who will win: Get Out
Who should win: Get Out or Lady Bird
This I'm town on. Lady Bird is my favorite but Get Out is a great film in its own right. I think there's a slight chance that the controversy of Get Out being in this category could hurt it, but I don't think it will. Lady Bird winning would actually be considered an upset, I think.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama
Jessica Chastain, "Molly's Game"
Sally Hawkins, "The Shape of Water"
Frances McDormand, "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri"
Meryl Streep, "The Post"
Michelle Williams, "All the Money in the World"
Who will and should win: Frances McDormand
The Globes love Meryl so she could sneak in, but I don't see anyone other than Frances taking this.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama
Timothée Chalamet, "Call Me by Your Name"
Daniel Day-Lewis, "Phantom Thread"
Tom Hanks, "The Post"
Gary Oldman, "Darkest Hour"
Denzel Washington, "Roman J. Israel, Esq."
Who will win: Gary Oldman
Who should win?
I haven't seen any of these movies. Oldman probably takes it because he's a veteran actor with a ton of buzz behind him, even though that movie (to me) looks dull AF. Daniel Day-Lewis could sneak in as this is his last performance before retirement.

Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy
Judi Dench, "Victoria & Abdul"
Margot Robbie, "I, Tonya"
Saoirse Ronan, "Lady Bird"
Emma Stone, "Battle of the Sexes"
Helen Mirren, "The Leisure Seeker"
Who will and should win: Saoirse Ronan
I haven't seen I, Tonya yet so I don't know how Robbie is. I think Dench could win for star power but the Globes would be best giving it to Saoirse who was amazing in Lady Bird.

Best Director
Guillermo del Toro, "The Shape of Water"
Martin McDonagh, "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri"
Christopher Nolan, "Dunkirk"
Ridley Scott, "All The Money in the World"
Steven Spielberg, "The Post"
Who will win: Steven Spielberg
Who should win: McDonagh or Nolan
I can see them awarding Spielberg here. McDonagh may be too edgy and Nolan never seems to win when he should.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy
Steve Carell, "Battle of the Sexes"
Ansel Elgort, "Baby Driver"
James Franco, "The Disaster Artist"
Hugh Jackman, "The Greatest Showman"
Daniel Kaluuya, "Get Out"
Who will win: James Franco
Who should win: Franco or Kaluuya
I think the Globes will award Franco as he's the more showy of the two but Kaluuya is a worthy winner and I hope he gets it.

Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture
Mary J. Blige, "Mudbound"
Hong Chau, "Downsizing"
Allison Janney, "I, Tonya"
Laurie Metcalf, "Lady Bird"
Octavia Spencer, "The Shape of Water"
Who will win: Laurie Metcalf
Who should win: Her or Janney
Like I said, I haven't seen I,Tonya so I'm just going off buzz. Laurie was great and I think Lady Bird has a good chance of winning other categories so Metcalf seems like the safest bet.

Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture
Willem Dafoe, "The Florida Project"
Armie Hammer, "Call Me by Your Name"
Richard Jenkins, "The Shape of Water"
Christopher Plummer, "All the Money in the World"
Sam Rockwell, "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri"
Who will and should win: Sam Rockwell
If he doesn't win I'm going to bitch. Prepare yourselves.

Best Original Score in a Motion Picture
"Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri"
"The Shape of Water"
"Phantom Thread"
"The Post"
"Dunkirk"
Who will win: The Shape of Water
Who should win: ?
Without seeing three of these nominees I'm just guessing.

Best Screenplay in a Motion Picture
"The Shape of Water"
"Lady Bird"
"The Post"
"Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri"
"Molly's Game"
Who will win: The Post
Who should win: Three Billboards or Lady Bird
Again, I think the HFPA will love The Post. Even though Three Billboards and Lady Bird are two of my favorites.

Best Motion Picture - Foreign Language
"A Fantastic Woman"
"First They Killed My Father"
"In the Fade"
"Loveless"
"The Square"
Who will win: First They Killed My Father
Who should win: ?
I haven't seen any of these, but I think they'd love to give it to Angelina Jolie.

Best Animated Film
"The Boss Baby"
"The Breadwinner"
"Ferdinand"
"Coco"
"Loving Vincent"
Who will and should win: Coco.
No competition here.

Best TV series - Drama
"The Crown"
"Game of Thrones"
"The Handmaid's Tale"
"Stranger Things"
"This Is Us"
Who will and should win: The Handmaid's Tale
We know the HFPA love their freshman shows and this one is an Emmy winner and hugely popular. I'd be shocked if it lost.

Best performance by Actress in a TV series - Drama
Caitriona Balfe, "Outlander"
Claire Foy, "The Crown"
Maggie Gyllenhaal, "The Deuce"
Katherine Langford, "13 Reasons Why"
Elisabeth Moss, "The Handmaid's Tale"
Who will and should win: Elisabeth Moss
I actually love all the nominees here so I would be happy for any of them, but I think Elisabeth will repeat her Emmy win here.

Best performance by an Actor in a TV Series - Drama
Sterling K. Brown, "This is Us"
Freddie Highmore, "The Good Doctor"
Bob Odenkirk, "Better Call Saul"
Liev Schreiber, "Ray Donovan"
Jason Bateman, "Ozark"
Who will win: Freddie Highmore
Who should win: Bob Odenkirk
I'm bias with Better Call Saul. Bateman and Highmore have the Freshman series and I think The Good Doctor seems like more of a win from the HFPA.

Best TV series - Musical or Comedy
"Black-ish"
"Marvelous Mrs. Maisel"
"Master of None"
"SMILF"
"Will & Grace"
Who will win: Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Who should win: ?
I don't watch any of these. I love Frankie Shaw so part of me wants SMILF to get this but I think MMM is the flashier choice.

Best performance by an Actor in a TV series - Musical or Comedy
Anthony Anderson, "Black-ish"
Aziz Ansari "Master of None"
Kevin Bacon, "I Love Dick"
William H. Macy, "Shameless"
Eric McCormack, "Will and Grace"
Who will win: Kevin Bacon
Who should win: ?
Again, going with the freshman guess. Unless they count the Will and Grace revival as Freshman, I suppose Eric McCormack could be a contender.

Best performance by an Actress in a TV series - Musical or Comedy
Pamela Adlon, "Better Things"
Alison Brie, "Glow"
Issa Rae, "Insecure"
Rachel Brosnahan, "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel"
Frankie Shaw, "SMILF"
Who will win: Rache Bosnahan
Who should win: Frankie Shaw
Bias for Fankie. Everyone except Issa is a first time nominee so this could go several ways, but I think Marvelous Mrs. Maisel takes a win here too.

Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
"Big Little Lies"
"Fargo"
"Feud: Bette and Joan"
"The Sinner"
"Top of the Lake: China Girl"
Who will win: Big Little Lies
Who should win: BLL, Feud, or Fargo
This was such a great year for limited series. I'd be happy with a win for either of the three above but BLL will repeat their Emmy win.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Robert De Niro, "The Wizard of Lies"
Jude Law, "The Young Pope"
Kyle MacLachlan, "Twin Peaks"
Ewan McGregor, "Fargo"
Geoffrey Rush, "Genius"
Who will win: Robert De Niro
Who should win: Ewan McGregor
This is hard, I'm guessing they go in favor of star power.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Jessica Biel, "The Sinner"
Nicole Kidman, "Big Little Lies"
Jessica Lange, "Feud: Bette and Joan"
Susan Sarandon, "Feud: Bette and Joan"
Reese Witherspoon, "Big Little Lies"
Who will and should win: Nicole Kidman
There's some great performances from the BLL and Fued crew but I think Nicole will continue her much deserved winning streak

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Alfred Molina, "Feud"
Alexander Skarsgard, "Big Little Lies"
David Thewlis, "Fargo"
David Harbour, "Stranger Things"
Christian Slater, "Mr. Robot"
Who will and should win: Alexander Skarsgard
I think he repeats his Emmy win here as well.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Laura Dern, "Big Little Lies"
Ann Dowd, "The Handmaid's Tale"
Chrissy Metz, "This is Us"
Michelle Pfeiffer, "The Wizard of Lies"
Shailene Woodley, "Big Little Lies"
Who will win: Laura Dern
Who should win: Ann Dowd
I think Laura will win here, but I'm really rooting for surprise Emmy winner Ann Dowd.

Comments

  1. I really hope Margot wins. She really should, she is spectacular in the movie. It's so odd she is in comedy category when her best scenes are dramatic.

God just give everything to Rockwell

    1. I can see why they put her in comedy, that film does look a bit campy. I just hope I can see it before the Oscars.

      Yaaaaaaaaassssssssssss Rockwell for everything.

  2. I am sooo out of the loop....I have to look up some of these pictures to find out what they are about. The film with Oldman as Churchill I would love to see because it is about WW2 and how he rallied not only the nation, but the world. I think, if one is not a history buff, it would be boring AF:). I have watched The Good Doctor, more than once, but the lead just annoys the hell out of me and I have to turn it off. All the others are either on HBO or Netflix which I don’t get at all. I will be watching so it will be fun to see who will win.

    1. The thing with Oldman, I think part of the reason I'm not excited to see that is because 1) I just watched Dunkirk, an excellent WWII film and 2) I just watched The Crown, which featured John Lithgow as an excellent Churchill. It feels so "been there, done that."

  3. Totally agree on The Darkest Hour - it looks so boring! I'm sure Oldman is great and it's all well made but the trailer does nothing for me. Would love to see either The Post or Three Billboards do well – hoping to catch the former at an advance screening this weekend :)

  4. Holy balls! I didn't realize we were inching so close to the Globes!! It's TIME Y'ALL!

I definitely want to give Margot Robbie the globe over Saoirse Ronan...I found her performance more compelling than Ronan's character.

  5. I really love your going all in on Rockwell for supporting. I am so torn between him and Defoe. My two favorite performances of the year period. It will most likely be Defoe here and Oscar if you ask me.

    1. I think Dafoe has the edge too but he really shouldn't I think what Rockwell did was far more impressive.
