2014 Academy Award Winners + my thoughts

Alright, alright, alright. The Oscars have came and went. I went 18/24 (mind you, I left the short categories blank as I had no clue) As always, I had a great time tweeting with everyone about it. Even though host Ellen actually broke Twitter after taking a selfie. I thought she did a great job hosting. She was very interactive with the audience. (both there and at home) Plus she ordered pizza and told a dick joke, so she wins in my book. Here's a list of the winners. They are in bold, and my thoughts are in green.

Best Picture
American Hustle
Captain Phillips
Dallas Buyers Club
Gravity
Her
Nebraska
Philomena
12 Years a Slave
The Wolf of Wall Street
This was very deserving, and Steve McQueen gave a great speech at the end of the night. Plus Paul Dano was up on stand, and I will never tire of watching that.
Best Director
David O. Russell, American Hustle
Alfonso Cuarón, Gravity
Alexander Payne, Nebraska
Steve McQueen, 12 Years a Slave
Martin Scorsese, The Wolf of Wall Street
I know I'm in the minority, but I would've rather seen McQueen win this one.
Best Actress
Amy Adams, American Hustle
Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine
Sandra Bullock, Gravity
Judi Dench, Philomena
Meryl Streep, August: Osage County
Her speech was classy,classy, classy.
Best Actor
Christian Bale, American Hustle
Bruce Dern, Nebraska
Leonardo DiCaprio, The Wolf of Wall Street
Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years a Slave
Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club
NOOOOO Leo!! Actually, I'm happy for McConaughey, I really am. He gave a great performance, but I shall not rest until Leo is given his overdue Oscar.
Best Supporting Actor
Barkhad Abdi, Captain Phillips
Bradley Cooper, American Hustle
Michael Fassbender, 12 Years a Slave
Jonah Hill, The Wolf of Wall Street
Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club
He started this whole thing out with an amazing speech, then he was topped by...
Best Supporting Actress
Sally Hawkins, Blue Jasmine
Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle
Lupita Nyong’o, 12 Years a Slave
Julia Roberts, August: Osage County
June Squibb, Nebraska
Not only did I squeal and clap when she won, but I almost cried after her speech. It was so beautiful and elegant. It's fitting because she literally looked like a princess last night.
Best Adapted Screenplay

Billy Ray, Captain Phillips
Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope, Philomena
John Ridley, 12 Years a Slave

“Ordinary Love,” Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom; music by Paul Hewson, Dan Evans, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen, a.k.a. U2; lyrics by Paul Hewson, a.k.a. Bono
Let It Go was really underwhelming (Especially when Karen O. and Pharrell gave awesome live performances of their songs) but the husband and wife duo that won gave a really sweet speech.

McConaughey sounded so ridiculously gentleman-y when he announced this winner.

  1. Pitt passing out pizza plates was my favorite thing to ever happen during an Oscar ceremony...and Cuaron winning is possibly my favorite Oscar win in the history of Oscar!

  2. Seriously they were all so hungry, Pitt almost swallowed that plate :) I liked Ellen's hosting, comparing to last year's disaster she was truly brilliant.

    1. All award shows should deliver pizza now. The SAGs can replace their fancy meals with it.

  3. The pizza bit was pure genius! And I did love the selfie too! I'm disappointed with the lack of surprises but I can't complain too much about the winners.

    1. At least Ellen stood out as host when everything else was so predictable.

  4. Harrison Ford nudging Ellen for a napkin during the pizza handout was my favorite moment of the night (tied with every time Lupita was on screen).

  5. lol your hate for gravity breaks my heart. but i also was moved by lupita and jared's speeches. i honestly want to be jared's friend, i lobe him so. Huge congrats to Her!

    1. I don't *hate* Gravity, I just had other films I liked better. It definitely deserved all the other technical awards!

  6. Seeing Karen O was my highlight. Yeah Lupita gave a really nice speech and deserved her win even though my vote was still with J-Law. Spike Jonze has an Oscar was a very nice thing to see too. Great post.

    1. Thanks! I just re-watched Karen O's performance again. It was so perfect.

  7. I loved Karen O's performance and I wanted her to win though I'm not upset that Frozen won Best Song. Plus, the guy who co-wrote the song has an EGOT now so he's in a rare company. I'm happy that Spike Jonze won while I was really, really, really happy that Chivo won the Best Cinematography prize.

    1. Having an EGOT is pretty damn impressive. Plus their cuteness made me a little less annoyed that Frozen won.

  8. I really enjoyed the Oscars this year. I think it had a lot to do with the hosting. Seth McFarlane was terrible. I really enjoyed Ellen. She did a great job. She should be the new Billy Crystal.

I was happy with who won this year. It was Matt's year, but I have been wishing for Leo to win one of these days. I hope he doesn't turn into Susan Lucci. He's a great actor. Really really great. He needs to win. He seriously needs to win.

I was rooting for 'Gravity,' but I thought '12 Years' was a great film. It was very sad, but I would have been happy with either of these films winning. Steve McQueen is fantastic. I am glad to Alfonso won the Best Direction Oscar. That man seriously worked on 'Gravity' for years. He's incredible.

    1. I forgot that he was working on Gravity for quite a bit of time. I think 12 Years was better because of it's ensemble. You really can't beat Fassbender, Ejiofer, Paulson, Dano, Cumberbatch, Nyong'o, Williams, Oduye, etc.

  9. Nice round up here. I’m totally fine with Cuarón winning, but I too would’ve preferred McQueen.

Lupita is a goddess. Her win was by far the highlight of the night for me.

  10. The ceremony was very entertaining, and I had no problem with most of the wins. But Leo! :(
