Review: Tropic Thunder

There have been a lot of comedies this summer that have been very “hit and miss”. Only two comedies in my opinion stand out from the rest. They would have to be “Pineapple Express” and the topic of my review “Tropic Thunder”

The entire point of Tropic Thunder is a satire on the ways of Hollywood. and Director/Writer/Actor Ben Stiller is spot on. While some of the Hollywood inside jokes may go over a few people’s heads. The rest are spot on, hilarious, and hit very close to home.

The plot is a movie within a movie. Action Star Tugg Speedman (Ben Stiller) Funny man Jeff Portney (Jack Black) 5 time Acedemy Award Winner Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.) and rapper turned actor Alpa Chino (Brandon T. Jackson) are just a few of the stars set to film ‘Tropic Thunder’, a big budget Vietnam war movie. Through an outrageous turn of events, the actors are thrown into the jungle in the middle of a real war between drug lords. The Naive actors don’t realize this, they are being told that they will shoot the film “guerella style” with hidden cameras planted throughout the jungle.

This movie faced a lot of controversy. First, Downey Jr. plays a blonde haired, blue-eyed Australian playing an African American man, but surprisingly that wasn’t what people were talking about. It was the fact that Stiller takes a stab at mentally disabled people with the subplot “Simple Jack”, a film that Tugg Speedman made while trying to break into dramatic acting, but according to Kirk Lazarus. “You never go full retard” because the Academy doesn’t recognize that. Also don’t miss plenty of hysterical celebrity cameos from Tobey McGuire, Lance Bass, and fun supporting bits by Matthew McConaughey and Tom Cruise

Controversial? Not in my opinion. This film was funny, it was clever, and it was something different. Everyone who made a big deal out of this film needs to calm down.

4/5 stars

Memorable Quote: “I don’t read the script, the script reads me!” - Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.)
