Thursday Movie Picks: Science Fiction Movies

This week's theme from Wandering Through the Shelves is Science Fiction movies. The kicker is, they cannot include space or aliens. So there goes 95% of what you know about sci fi, right? Here are three of my favorite sci fis that do not involve either of these things.

1) The One I Love

This little gem I cannot stop raving about. It's one of those films that you would not expect to be sci fi at first glance, but it is and it's wonderful. I know some interpreted this as having aliens, I didn't.

2) Never Let Me Go

I practically forced my friend to see this with me by telling him "It's a sci fi movie, don't worry!" He loved it, so I succeeded there. It looks like a simple period piece/probable love story on the surface, but it's kind of twisted when you think about it.

3) Sound of my Voice

Creepy cults with a person that says they're from the future? This movie stars the fantastic Brit Marling and I just love it so much. Plus that ending may or may not throw out your entire perception of the movie.

  1. I've actually never heard of your other picks but love Never Let Me Go. I knew almost nothing about it when I first saw it and was completely unprepared for the sci-fi element. It was one of those great experiences where you never know what's coming next.

    1. That would be an awesome experience. I knew it was coming ahead of time, but it's still such a beautiful film.

  2. The One I Love is on my watchlist, heard a lot of good things about that one

  3. I love Brit Marling, amazingly talented whilst I liked Sound of my Voice I very much did prefer Another Earth (I was going to include it but wasn't sure it was legit choice). I Origins, on the other hand, was ok but I wasn't as keen on it as Sound of my Voice and Another Earth.

    1. Another Earth was great, but I thought it wouldn't count because of the space stipulation. I also considered that one.

  4. I gotta check out that last one. Sounds very intriguing. I might have thrown out Her and Robot and Frank if I were a participant. In for The One I Love, too.

My watch list is longer than my life expectancy, I'm sure of it.

    1. You should start participating. It's fun. I'm using Her for a later pick, otherwise I would've put that here too. I love that film.

  5. I've seen Never Let Me Go, which unfortunately I wasn't crazy about even though I loved the cast. The other two are new to me, I'm curious about both particularly the first. I'm not big on sci-fi but I'm always open to finding undiscovered treasures. Thanks for the tip!

    1. You should check out The One I Love. The less you know about what goes on, the better.

  6. I never would've thought of The One I Love here, but that's a great little movie. My wife and I both loved it. Never Let Me Go is likewise an awesome pick. The novel is better and so beautifully written, but I thought they did a great job with this film version. That cast is perfect! Great picks!

  8. Yay glad we both picked Never Let Me Go. Ahah, it doesn't look at all like a scifi, so I totally understand your friend's reaction. I had no idea The One I Love is a scifi, I should give that a shot.

    1. You should, but don't look too deep into the plot. The surprise is worth it.

  11. I loved The One I Love, the less you know about the plot, the better. I'm one of the few who didn't like Never Let Me Go. I haven't seen your last pick but it sounds interesting.
