Review: Together

Official Synopsis:
Years into their relationship, Tim (Dave Franco) and Millie (Alison Brie) find themselves at a crossroads as they move to the country. With tensions already flaring, an encounter with an unnatural force threatens to corrupt their lives, their love and their flesh.

Together had a lot of buzz coming out of Sundance only to be hit with a plagiarism lawsuit against another film that was apparently pitched to Franco and Brie back in 2020 - Better Half. I wondered if this would ruin the film's chances at a wide release, but they prevailed and Better Half still doesn't have a distributer to release the film so the world can compare. The lawsuit is still ongoing, though.

I have to admit that did give me pause, but I still wanted to see this. If Better Half ever gets a release, I'll watch that too. Together is exactly as creepy, gross, and amusing as I'd hoped it would be. It makes for a worthy entry into the body horror genre. It's not very bloody, but it's gross enough to make you cringe.

I don't know if it's because it was the last horror movie I saw in theaters before this, but I couldn't help but compare it with Weapons, even though the films couldn't be more different. Unlike Weapons, Together has an ending that works very well. But where Weapons succeeds in having a very strong cast, I felt like Franco and Brie were way too self conscious in playing a couple in front of the camera. (They are married in real life) Which I get, it's probably weird to fake having sex with your spouse, but this is easily some of their weakest work.

I also felt like there were parts of the story that felt left out. Mainly with the family that owns the dogs we see at the beginning of the film. It felt like we should've seen them come up again, and not just with a throw away line from a kid. Maybe that ended up on the cutting room floor, or maybe it was never fleshed out. This is director Michael Shanks' first feature.

It's a good time for horror features at the box office this month, and Together is easily worth your time, even if it isn't perfect.
